Monitor refresh rate
« on: November 11, 2021, 02:32:25 AM »

I was wondering to what degree does a higher monitor refresh rate affect smoother flying in Il-2?

Most of my older monitors went up to 60 hertz, especially my 4k monitor. And it often just isn't enough to prevent jerky movements. I've found 4k monitors that go up to 144 hertz refresh rate that are affordable now, but still a hefty price.

So, before possibly buying one at 144 hrz, I wonder if anyone has any experience with high refresh rates contributing to smoother flying?

Hi agracier,

I upgraded to a 165hz (145 with overclock to 165) 2k G-sync monitor a couple of years ago. Simple answer is yes, for me more hertz meant much smoother flying plus I find the response and feel of the aircraft is much better - presumably due to lower latency. I find there is also a greater sense of speed in certain situations.

Obviously you need a graphics card and cpu that is going to routinely deliver above 60hz/fps in the first place.

I went for the g-sync just to be sure that I had the least chances of stutter and tearing, but of course that is a more expensive option.

I previously ran with a 1080ti and the game ran very well. Now I have a 3080ti and I'm routinely at 165fps in the air and 90+ on the ground.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

Tnx, this helps a lot. I really wanted to hear confirmation. I just recently bought a replacement monitor, 2560x1440 for one of my set of 3 monitors that broke down. By chance, it happened to be 75 hertz instead of 60 and when I tried Il-2 out on that monitor, it flew like a dream, very smooth.

But I'm just a neophyte in these things, so it's good to hear this confirmed.

I am looking at a 4k at 144 hertz for my main monitor now. My cpu and graphics card are all recent and hi-end.

tnx again

You're welcome. One other thought - some monitors need to be connected by displayport to give their full hz, even if they also have an HDMI port.

Best of luck

If you use TrackIR you will benefit from smoother panning if the monitor's refresh rate is >120 Hz. This is because the tracker can update at 120 fps. Now, when the game's frame rate drops below 120, the tracker update rate seems to jump down to 60. (If only the trackers update rate could track with the game frame rate.) For larger, high resolution displays, a good GPU will have you enjoying that glass-smooth, 120 fps head tracking goodness for a higher fraction of the time.
