Bought the Farm on Fresh Install
« on: November 19, 2021, 05:14:06 PM »

I'm trying to resurrect IL2 1946 & own the original DVD. When I try to install it on C:\IL2 Clean or my bigger internal drive it gets to "Removing applications" at 21% then gets an Error 1603 fatal error during installation - data error (cyclic redundancy check). I'd hoped to install clean then mega patch to 4.12.2 then pick BAT or VP. I run the setup file from the DVD as admin & also tried installing with XP compat.

Is it possible I have old code from previous install(s) in my registry or just causing problems in existing folders?

Il-2 does not create registry entries.

It's been a while, but I recall having to install by running:

   a.exe.

I have to copy the entire contents of the installation disc to a folder, then run the the install exe from there.

Sounds like a broken DVD.
tsisqua is right, you'll better grab a local copy of it, which - with a little luck - might work.
Other option: Buy the game online for a few bucks (I grabbed a Steam copy for $2.00 lately for a friend).
Other other option: Get in touch with me on PM.

Thanks for the good info - it's been awhile since I ran 1946 (used Dark Blue World mod then). I copied the DVD files to a large internal drive (not my main ssd drive) and installed from there to a clean folder. I'm now updated to 4.12.2 & making a new folder for either BAT or VP. I'll probably do VP first. I assume I need a new Selector and JSGME also. And it looks like the DVD check is in full play for now.

I'll reach out for help as I hit different waypoints in this process. Thanks again.

Update - So close, then nojoy. Launcher gets to 60% then crashes back to the Selector.

From a clean copy of updated 4.12.2 version, unzipped all the VPMod 3.1.1 files to the new folder, added the two small VPMod patches, added config.ini "Mod" info, tried both manually setting screen res in config.ini file and also just using the setup file; after several stops at 60% I tried running WIN8 compatible. I get no error messages at all. It just loads to 60% then dumps back to the selector. Load screen verifies 3.1.1 selector, SAS Mod & flyable aircraft 5.3.0.

The Selector looks OK - SAS Modact selected, 512MB max RAM, Balanced strategy & RAM GOOD.

Any ideas where to look next?

Back in business! Tested a couple of quick missions & trying a career next.

Apparently one of my unzips ended up in the wrong location & I was getting the 60% error. I suspect an aircraft file (looking at you Ju-88) was giving me grief. I'll apologize ahead of time for shooting down all the enemy planes over the channel.
