I'm looking at making YouTube flicks
« on: December 17, 2021, 08:27:58 AM »

In order to better showcase my modding work, I figure a 'flicker show' (a Green Mile reference) is better than still snaps, and then posting to YouTube. I've just started the first stage of this process; recording the movie. I got the built-in Windows thing working, which creates an mp4 file that seems limited to 1920 pixels in width. Not that this is so bad, really. My first attempts were at 30 fps output, the file size coming out at about 1MB per second. This seems a bit high to me, but I have absolutely no experience in this.

The next step will be editing, which I understand can be done with another built-in Windows movie maker app.

Any suggestions would be welcome, as this is all completely uncharted waters for me. At this point I'm not ambitious about fancy presentation. Free tools and basic capability are sufficient.

Thanks!

Unless it's improved, be careful with Windows Movie maker.  Save your work often as I've found it would freeze/crash with no warning once in a while.
IIRC VirtualDub is a powerful (and free) video editor but it's been quite a while since I've dabbled in making movies...   ;)

To edit your videos I recommend the professional software used by Hollywood in many movies.
Download the free version, it is very good and has great tools.
In my opinion it is the best software in its category.
there are many tutorials taught to manipulate in the software.

Well, Here's my first quick 'n dirty, rude 'n crude effort. No special effort at all; I just wanted to get something cooked up to get up to speed with the whole process of editing in the Windows app and creating/setting up my YouTube account.

Well done mate!

Look forward to watching videos showcasing your mods in action.

I have a question about smoke and it's duration, I'll post a couple of screenshots

Nice video.  Which map is that and what graphic settings are you using?  The buildings and ground texture look a helluva lot better than mine.  My maps seem more 'cartoony' whereas yours seem to have a more realistic look.

That's one of Squashman's Solomon Islands maps (Aug 42; think of the set as very much like the Slot series, but covering to Rabaul), with a texture adjustment by me. As for the buildings, I think that for the most part they're as provided in BAT.

I use Reshade, selecting two of the prod_80 effects; one being bloom to get the brighter sky gradient toward the horizon, and the other a color LUT (look-up table) to deliver that warm, somewhat greenish color cast, reminiscent of a slightly faded film stock.

Haven't played with Reshade as yet.  Is it idiot-proof? ;)
Does using Reshade "interfere" with any other mods or is it essentially standalone?

Reshade is a completely independent utility. You have it installed like any other software, but a couple of "ini" files are placed in Il-2's root folder (and likewise for any other game you would like to do this for.) Once you've selected the one or more from the dozens of effects available, which are then specified in the ini files, you're done. It's kind of 'fire and forget', unless you want to go back and fiddle with effects again. Now whenever you fire up the game, part of the initializing/loading process includes the Reshade profile, with an on-screen notification of that part of the process.

It's conflict-proof, yet a seeming integral part of the game. Once you've gone through the setting up process you'll soon almost forget it's there. Except for the graphical improvement.

Jump in! If you have questions I'll be glad to assist.

You can start out by looking at Douglas Rangel's YouTube tutorial. His vid is what lit the fire under me to finally check it all out.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.  Given that the weather's gone to crap here in the Great White North at the moment I can take the opportunity to have a go at this.

Installed Reshade and essentially good to go.  I've activated most of the Prod80 effects but couldn't figure out the LUT effect you mentioned as that appears to be the one that will wash out some of the colour.  Can you provide some guidance on that one please?

Only other problem was that I couldn't get the mouse to work with the Reshade screen and had to use ctrl-tab and the arrow keys, a bit clunky.  I changed the mouse= value but no joy.
