Get it here:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/lvcskj9arsckkcm/Grass_runway_grass_clumps.7z/file

From the included readme file:

B.A.T. includes a version of the grass runway having a series of grass clumps lining both sides of the strip. If any other game version includes this, this mod will address it.

----------

The problem with the execution of the grass clumps is that they have a rather limited visibility distance, and thus pop into and out of visibility awfully suddenly and jarringly. These clumps are present in the first (most detailed) LOD only. I tried adding them to the 2nd LOD, but the resulting sheer number of polygons caused odd disappearance issues. As it is, there are 1490 (!) polygons making up these tufts of grass.

----------

I offer here two version of the grass runway (the type is called "ground").

One has the grass tuft objects toned down by making the alpha cut level more aggressive. This makes the tufts less 'dense'. Additionally, I increased the visibility distance for the LOD by 50%, which helps to make them 'fade' better with distance. This is the default version in place when you install this. There is also a copy of this version of Body.msh in:

  3do\Airfield\ground\Runway\with grass clumps\

The other version of the runway removes the grass clumps entirely, thus putting the runway back to the old stock condition. This version of Body.msh is in:

  3do\Airfield\ground\Runway\without grass clumps\

To use this one, copy and paste it to the next folder up, named Runway.

----------

In the version of Body.msh that includes the grass clumps, the .mat file invoked for the grass is called bush.mat. This in turn calls the original, high resolution texture, bush.tga. If you want to try out a lower resolution texture, open Body.msh in Notepad, find the topmost [Materials] section, and rename "bush" to "bush_low". This will use the lower resolution texture, bush_lop.tga. A lower resolution results in a better 'fading' in and out, although it looks worse from close up.  ;)

----------

I've also rationalized all LODs for all parts of this runway, making them the same so that there is a consistent changing of the texture by LOD.

----------

If you have some other grass runway texture you prefer, you can delete the four .tga files and the four .mat files in:

  3do\Airfield\ground\

If you end up not using the grass tufts, and are confident of never doing so, you can delete the four "bush" related files (two .mat and two .tga) in:

  3do\Airfield\ground\Runway\

----------

As with all my mods, this work is made available for use by any and all, for any purpose, without restriction.

Thanks WxTech

I'm sure many people will be happy to correct this eyesore.

Hey WxTexch.
This mod seems to be fucking up the TreeLineA in BAT, with the result of no missions being saved and the TreeLineA (Object # 2155) not being able to load.

scratch that, the problem is somewhere else in my setup of 3do objects.
It's not your mod for all I see, sorry for the confusion.

edit:
it's even stranger now. When I add your mod directly into #WAW3, the tree line is good. When I pack your mod into an SFS and add that, the tree line is gone....
That's an interesting one to investigate.

edit2:
apparently this only works when added on an era SFS level, added to each era separately. When I try to add it to the overhead where all the objects are usually stored, it crashes the trees in every era. Must be something in the pecking order of files going wrong.... well, at least an explanation. Still unclear why this mod affects tree line in the first place.

Fabulous. This is great. Here is a little clarification of what WxTech did. These pictures are from BAT 4.2.1

Standard BAT grass that lines the sides of many runways:

Same view more or less with WxTech's toned-down grass:

And now, with WxTech's grass removal:

I have a question.

In order to install this mod in "BAT4.2.2", where should I put it to get the effect?
I put it in the same place as "4.1.3", but it doesn't seem to be effective.

BAT4.1.3

BAT4.2.2

RABIZO,
Do you have another mod that deals with the Ground runway object?

Because this does not involve classfiles, it's not important where in your mods listing this appears, but if there is another instance of the same object, the first one read is the one used.

WxTech Thanks.

I don't understand what you mean by "Do you have another mod that deals with the Ground runway object?"
At the time of 4.1.3, I put it in both the "#WAW3" folder and "#WAW3", "MAPMODS", "Maps", "3do", and "Airfield". (Is this method correct?)
I used the same method for 4.2.2, but the results were different.

You have an extra folder above 3do. The correct structure:

#WAW3/YourModName/3do/Airfield/Ground/Runway

The "YourModName" is whatever you like.

Thank you.
Things in this order are in "#WAW3".

RABIZO,
Does the Runway/Body.msh have my altered LOD values of 90, 280, 1300 and 20000? And does Bush.mat have my AlphaTestVal 0.7?

If yes, are you still seeing the old representation?

Thank you "WxTech".

Here's what the folder looks like:
Did you change 60, 140, 1100, 2500 for "Body LOD value"?
