Dakar Map - new updated version 2
« on: January 26, 2022, 10:07:02 AM »

Here's a link to a new updated version of an older map of Dakar. This new version shows a smaller area and has been completely redone from scratch, with new textures to hopefully give a better African feel to the map. It's been repopped as well with all new objects.

As with most of my maps, it was made to look good, give a good feel of scenery. Best to avoid flying at 12 with good weather. Map looks best with hazy weather or worse.
The airfields are mostly randomly and evenly placed - outside of Dakar of course. But with the terrain being predominately flat, I've found it easy enough to land almost anywhere ...

The screenshots are with hazy or poor weather, either early in the day or later in the afternoon.

Thanks Agracier. I have always liked this map, going back to Cracken's Vultures of Dakar campaign.

Tnx ... this one was made with mostly African terrain from GE, so I hope it looks better.

Looks very nice Agracier. It is smaller so old missions will not work on it correcly probably?

I don't think old mission from the first version will work on this newer version. Airfields are in different locations and so are all objects on the newer map. Essentially it is a completely  new map, but of an area that was previously mapped.

Sorry for that, but I hope you'll like the look and feel of the new version. I tried to give it a more African feel than the first version.

Land anywhere, eh? That's easy for you to say, as I stand looking at the wrecked undercarriage of my Stearman...

Seriously, though, this map is superb. The textures are perfect for the region. I do think that Africa maps in il2 tend to have a little too much silver sand - this is much more like it. I would love to see your Djibouti given the same treatment.

Thanks for this map.

I've gotten pretty good at landing anywhere on a map as long as it's relatively level. This because I can never seem to align my aircraft to the runway when landing ... I always veer off and crash into buildings ... ha ha.

I've got a bunch of maps in various stages of completion. And Indeed I'd like to do the Djibouti region again, but then on a much smaller map. You're right about maps having too much sand sometimes. Using sand textures is easy as they are easy to make from GE. Getting textures with the right amount of sparse scrub vegetation and yet with a dry look for arid areas is a bit different.

Just for the fun of it, here is a basic map, one texture only for a possible smaller Djibouti area map. It uses the textures and actors from the Dakar_2 map, or you can pop another other working load.ini and actors into it, just to get an idea of how the terrain looks, how mountainous, how decently realistic the mountains/hills look, cause sometimes they come out like heaps of whipped cream and that doesn't look good in a map ... ha ha.

If it ever gets off the ground and going as a project, I won't use the Dakar textures, but something less red.

Anyway, remember, just a trial/basic map, one (1) texture only.

download.

Hi agracier,

having fun with Sea Harriers striking terrorists on this map:

You do have a building in the middle of a river in Square L9 (I moved it to dry land in mine).

Here's another map I am working on around the same area as Djibouti. But I am stuck with some textures and it does have quite a lot of sand ...
