Enhanced Sun glare on water
« on: February 16, 2022, 07:31:09 AM »

EDIT, Feb 16, 2022. Version #2.: I made up a fuller array of textures to select from. Upon reflection (no pun intended  ;)  ), I now feel the most 'extreme' version (now named "A") has a too abrupt fall-off in brightness. This inspired me to make up a set of graduated textures that offer you, the player, more choice. I think a more middling version that retains good central brightness yet does not fall off in brightness too sharply is a good compromise, worth setting as the default. For my tastes, version "C" fills the bill.

If you've already downloaded the first release, please d/l again; same link at the bottom of this page.

The full array of selectable Sun glare on water textures (click to enlarge). The default in effect upon installing is variation "C".

Readme file reproduced immediately below.

A tiny mod to boost the intensity of the Sun's specular reflection on water, and offer a range of choices to taste. I first cooked this up for 4.08, back in 2015. Then I revisited it in 2019.

The "Sun water glare NEW.jpg" multi-panel array of screen grabs shows the stock glare on the left, and the strongest version on the right (which is named "Sun_A.jpg"). This was my own preferred version for some time, but now I'm not liking the rapid drop-off in brightness near the periphery. I think "Sun_C.jpg" offers good central brightness and a not too abrupt fall-off. This is the one in effect when you install.

Here is the texture selection, ranked in order of increasing brightness:
  Sun_STOCK.tga
  Sun_E.tga
  Sun_D.tga
Sun_C.tga  (this is the version included here as Sun.tga)
  Sun_B.tga
Sun_A.tga  (my first default offering, which I now feel is too abrupt in fall-off)

If you want to try another texture, do this:

- Delete the current "Sun.jpg".
- Make a copy of the desired texture and paste it in the same folder. (It should have a "(2)" added to the name.)
- Rename this copy to "Sun.jpg".
- Exit the game and restart so as to see the new texture's effect.

Cheers!

I admit that your accessories are like a pinch of exclusive oriental spices, for a sophisticated culinary taste.  8)

This Sun reflection is a map-related texture, going into the \MAPMODS folder. And so it's not technically an 'effect'. My effects mod concerns principally the stuff residing in the [ \Effects\ ] and [ \3do\Effects\ ] folders.

If I release a mod by itself, even if superficially it might be thought of as an 'effect', it is a standalone mod which is not and will not be part of my effects pack. Unless I specify otherwise.
