Bee's Rabaul 1944 map adjusted
« on: May 17, 2022, 03:48:25 PM »

Get it here:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/9we4wxvro4g4hpf/Rabaul_1944_retexture_WxTech.7z/file

From the included readme:

This retexture concerns Bee's Rabaul 1944 map, and presupposes you already have it in your game. I supply here only the altered files. I have placed some textures that formerly were in other folders into this map's texture folder ("Rabaul"), so as make this mod fully self-contained, and to not potentially interfere with their use in other maps.

The changes:

- Most important is the elimination of the far too prominent 'zebra striping' at farther distances due to the ForestFar texture that was used (it had very pronounced shadowing representative of fairly sharply ridged terrain). I HUGELY reduced the contrast, so as to result in a more uniform forest that now has the artificial and strong fake 'shadowing' greatly reduced.
- The texture underlying the forest (seen at nearer distance) also had its contrast reduced somewhat, as it also had a shadowing representative of sharply ridged terrain (albeit rather subtler than for the ForestFar texture).
- The layered forest textures are all darkened by a moderate amount, and made greener.
- The auto-generated trees are darkened somewhat, and given a bit of a richer green color.
- The water is darkened, reduced in color intensity and shifted in hue toward the blue.

The additions:

- I include my favourite 2048 pixel high clouds texture.
- I include my rotated Moon textures more appropriate for tropical maps.

The result is vegetation that has a better overall balance in hue, and looks much more alive than the former 'dead' brown aspect. The transition between the near and far forest cover is much less shocking in its difference. The water has a tone and hue more in keeping with a natural appearance, and is better balanced with respect to the tone of the land.

With appreciation to Bee for his creation of this map!

My alterations here are offered for use by any and all, for any purpose, without restriction.

For me, the map does not work - to be completely happy, there is no: Rapopo.tga
My fault. In 'my' Rabaul 1944 mod, the file Rapopo.tga is named Rapopo_fields.tga. The map is already working - it's beautiful! Thank you.
