Ju52 Family (G3E, G4E, G6E, G7E, G10E, AA1C toucan)
« on: November 03, 2022, 02:43:28 AM »

With the release of the 415 patch, I had high hopes concerning the loudly advertised "new" Ju52.... I was wrong :(, but...
The 3D model is the same lousy 3D model of the original release of Il2, a long time ago - with all the childhood disease that plagued these early models.
What was added was the lower turret bin of the G3E/G4E that circulated on Aviaskins and SAS forum for quite a number of years, and "interior meshes" - such as ESAC bomb bays (but the number of the bomb bays was wrong) seats for troops and para versions, stretchers for ambulance version, cargo crates - but without making an interior mesh for the fuselage, keeping the old infamous double sided material that shows the external camo on the inner side of the plane. The photographic sources used for some of these meshes was also a cause of errors, avoidable through a better screening of the available sources on the web.

The damage model on the meshes did not match the name of the same collisions in the java, with predictable results.

The new cockpit is beautiful...seen in Mesh Viewer but in the game there is a display bug - to correct this bug I had to import the G4e_Panel.msh mesh to 3Dmax and move slightly forward the polygons supporting the instruments background from the main panel polygons to avoid visual confusion at display time, before re-exporting the mesh.

The new skins by Hayate are more than beautiful (but are made to fit only the customisation option, see below)

The java however was interesting:
Not so much the customisation of the spats: a gimmick used here to put an un-necessary and unwanted limitation to skinning. It caused me some headache to find an adequate solution enabling to make it "unharming" without cancelling it
But the introduction in 415 of new codes for displaying  a "pre-loaded" model in the qmb window, enabling to see a "what you see is what you get" display of what is the configuration in the game of each option, by displaying the conditional meshes coded in java, is really a great thing.

So I decided to lift the glove....
I began to correct the meshes and play with the java
- opened each mesh and corrected the collisons names.
- enabled opening the cargo doors on the right side, making the correct cargo dooor and opening for each version
- same thing for the rear door on the left side. This door is also absent on paratroops and supplies dropping missions.
- created the windows configuration nsuitable to each version (through alpha cutting)
- added functional condor nest turrets and waist MGS, wherever seen on these planes
- added interior meshes for the fuselage and tail
- opened the hole for the upper MG turret in the tail (till now it was simulated by a black spot on the skin - and no, there is no alpha layer enabled material present on the roof of the Tail1_D0, only on its sides, don't ask me why - another core il2 surprise)
- added new alternate gear spats, and added their mapping on the void so whoever wants to make new skins can do so, without
cancelling the current customisation option.
- added skis and their coding for the G7E and G10E
- imported the code from the gui in 415 and adapted it to 412 so the "pre loaded" option display of conditional meshes is enabled as well as the customisation results.
- Added other versions of the Ju52 to the original G4E and G5E: G3E (only 4 JU52 used in the SCW were G4E, all the opthers being G3E), G6E, G7E, G10E and the AA1C Toucan. I did not touch the G5E (this will come later, I need a break)
- created and added suitable bomloads.
- created and added new dedicated default skins folders for each version
- created separate fmd and emd files for each version of the plane.

Here's the result.

(I am meanwhile sending the FlightModels to Vasya and the new Voids to Hayate asking them to be kind and help correcting these and adapt the current templates.)

Yeah, don't be frustrated. Modding can be a pain sometimes. See my work at Avengers.
It got a tad better with new 3-D, still Cockpits are not perfect, some stations crap.
At our PBYs it was more hell, the crap model.
The upgrading of Dimons PBY still on the desk here.
Still in the early stages of adding Hooks.
Other stuff need longer for me to fix.
It's a prolonging journey of trying.

I feel with you, see it, you gave your best, did
as good as possible. It's not useless work.
Thanks a bunch

Best wishes
Tobias

Some details on the armament of the Spanish G3E
All the Ju52 used in the Spanish civil war, ( 61 aircraft numbered 22-47 to 22-106 + replacement aircraft), were G3E versions except 4 late war G4E aircraft:
The operational documents show the official bombload for Ju52 equipped with German bombracks (there is mention of a "Spanish bomb rack" but no details exist)
Demolicion de fuerte edificaciones o fortificaciones     6x250 kg
mediano de destruccion                                 24x50 kg
contra tropas, atrincheramientos y concentraciones   96x10 kg
incendios en gran scala                                 846x1 kg inc.
mixto de destrucciones grandes y lijeras              2x 250 kg+ 16x 50kg
mixto de destruccion lijera y contra tropas              8x50 kg + 64x10 kg
mixto incendiario y contra tropas                              64x10 kg + 282x1 kg
mixto completo                                            8x50 kg+ 32x10 kg+  282x1kg inc.

each bomb rack could fit:
cada lanzabomba:                                                     2x250 kg o  8x50 kg o 32x10 kg o 282x1kg inc (=4 BSK-36)          .
Note that the full capacity of the BSK-36 containers was 288 x 1kg B1 Incendiaries. Why they were not fully loaded, but lacked 1 or 2  bomblet each, remains a mystery.

The Spanish used on the Ju52 the following bombs
SC250 with ElAz A, ElAz5 (El A.Z.C. 50) Sorte II, or Ebro fuze (Hispania E.C.  "Ebro")
SC50   with ElAz A, ElAz5, or Ebro fuze
SC10   with AZC10 (hu.t), Hispania modified, Entero, or SanriagoMendi S-1 Superquick fuze
B1E
The ElAz fuzes were instant or short delay as were the Spanish fuzes.
The Ebro fuze was similar in shape (in its initial version) to the ElAz fuze but was air pressure activated. Less expensive than the German fuze it remained in use till the sixties.
The Santiagomendi S-1 was the first superquick fuze in history, deploying at release a short extension probe and exploding just before touching the ground. If the concept of extended fuze probe had been already tested in ww1, the concept of an extrasensible fuze was new. It also had its inherent safety problems therefore only the vertical version was a success, remaining in production and use till the sixties and the phasing out of the spanish CASA made he111.

All these fuses had minimum activation delays:
ElAz A, 5 and 50 Sorte I        2 – 8 sec      lowest drop height in level flight 320m
ElAz 50 Sorte II                    2.2 – 14 sec      lowest drop height in level flight 980m
AZC10                                 2.4s               lowest drop height is 30 m but danger from the splinters impose that the dropping height must be over 200 m.

The Spanish also used the Ju52 for dedicated airdropped supplies of food, arms and ammunitions.
Strangely enough they did not use chutes - but either "innovative" methods such as attaching a live turkey to the dropped package before releasing it from a DC-2, to slow the fall - or no chute at all , using specially devised "Tubo" metallic containers or double envelop sacks:
Tubo 145 liters, 130 liters and 80liters (a smaller slender one was also built to be used on the SM81s bomb racks)
Bread sacks (sandbags sacks were used) of 30-35kg
Larger sacks of 80kg
"special sacks) - no details on these

Toucan covers in fact 3 different versions of the J52:
The Ju52/3MG10E built in Vichy France by Amiot for the  Germans during the war with an cargo door enlarged in height (3 parts upper door)
The Toucan version of this G10E (sometimes wrongly said to be a copy of 14E)  with a regular cargo door
A Toucan passenger version with a cargo door welded to the fuselage and 2 additional windows installed in this door.
The Toucan was also used as an improvised bomber during the Indochina conflict.
A few existing photos show the installation of the small bomb racks under the fuselage and wings with bombs of 50kg DT2, as well as the dropping of "touques incendiaires" from the left rear door.
Documents from the French Defense archive show that 100kg bombs could be also installed and not only 50kg. The range limitation was of no concern as most of the operations occurred in a circle of 200km from the airbases, so the full 2t cargo capacity could be used.
The "Touques Incendiaires" were a French copy of the British 45lb incendiary cans (maybe even British leftover stocks) - not napalm but a mixture of kerosene and phosphorus.

Andrey,
I work on 412 Modact as it is easier to mod on it than in BAT.
However, Vampire_pilot is making the adaptation and integration for BAT
It will take a few days as the new BAT upgrade is ready and he put it on standoff waiting just for this pack .

Anyway, I think that if you put all the files in the WAW3 folder, the Ju52 mod will load,  but for the Gui, you may need to put its folder in the MODS folder as it is more general folder - I suppose that the waw3 folder is limited to planes and bombs.

A few pics of the new Gui:

This is the final mod for BAT 4.2.2 :)

There are some things to iron out in BAT, so BAT users be aware that this package will not simply work on your BAT right away. But you'll get it integrated soon anyway.
