J-29 Tunnan: can't get enough speed at take-off.
« on: September 17, 2023, 03:00:23 AM »

Hey! I can't get enough speed for taking off with the Tunnan; it only goes until less than 100 km/h. Sometimes it even burns up. The autopilot takes off, but then goes down, like it loses power or something. What am I downg wrong? I turned off complex engine management. AI manages to take off just right. I make sure to remove brakes and air brakes before starting the engine up.

Thanks!

- indicate the version of your game... I assume you're talking about the VP pack?
- post in the technical forum of the pack you're using!

I always get mad when other people don’t specify the software they are working with and here I am doing the same.

I'm using BAT 4.2.2. The Tunnan is included there

I'll post this in BAT, unless a mod wants to move this thread there, in order not to clutter the forum. Otherwise, you can lock or delete this thread

I don't think its BAT...

I run latest BAT with no extra mods.

85% Throttle, and 1510 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT

That is all you need to know.

Didn't even know what this plane was, had to look it up.  So I test piloted it.

Best way to test pilot in IL2 is put it on AUTOPILOT a few times and just observe what the auto it doing, AND what the other AI planes are doing.

With this SAAB it sets flaps at 33%, then throttles up to 100%, took off, then dropped throttle...  Though the AI SAABs were just fine and started cruising at 200+mph after take off.

Seems basic enough, but when I tried to take off after I caught on fire right after lift off, and dropped into the water when i lowered my throttle after lift off.

Hit the TAB key to watch the engine functions which will let you see the TEMPERATURE...

After a few times of that I noticed that the overheat warning comes on at about 1510 Degrees... while cruising that was at about 92%-94% throttle.

If I kept the throttle below that and the heat staid stable just below 1500.  85% throttle gave me good speed.

So I set my flaps to 33%, started at 100% throttle holding the stick back some to lift off, watched the TEMPERATURE, when it got to 1400 I lowered my throttle to 70%ish.  Took off raised flaps flew level.  After my temp dropped back to 1400 I increased throttle to 85%.Took off just fine and maintained flight after.

At 85% and 1389Degrees Temp, I built up speed to about 563mph and cruised steady at that.

If doing it this way doesn't work for you maybe it is BAT?

Have Fun

1510 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT

Hey!
I just tested. Turns out that after 800ºC the engine overheats and the plane automatically reduces throttle. I turn off Engine overheat, so the plane won't reduce throttle because of temperature but I can't get the plane to go over 80km/h with 14 rockets or 110 km/h only with guns. Again, air brakes are off

Edit: to test a little more, I started with some air starts and the plane worked out fine. I changed planes and used an F-86E-25. I tried to take off but again, I couldn't get so fast as to actually take off. I watched the external cameras and the plane wouldn't pitch nor yaw. I tried with an air start and the plane did pitch and yaw.
After all this, I suspected a memory leak so I restarted my computer and now the Tunnan and the F-86E-25 work just fine, so the moral of the story is 'curse you, memory leaks'

Edit2: Asura's DGen pack too has problems at take-off when the game has been running for so long, so it's not BAT the issue.

I give up. There's no way this plane burns out so easily. I blew up at 900ºC. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong

I took off just fine without armaments
From my BAT install

Do things work normal for other aircraft?

Are you throttling to 100% hp only long enough to get up to speed to take off?

It shouldn't overheat it you watch and manage the TEMP number, like if it starts to burn up at 800C try to keep it at 700C.

Sorry I use MPH, no KmH stuff, the TEMPs I mentioned above are in Fahrenheit

900C is like 1652F, I caught on fire after 1500 Fahrenheit which was at about lift off, had to watch the TEMP and lower the throttle before it got close to 1500.  If I went 100% all through takeoff, I would burn up a few seconds after.

I used Midway, which is a pretty short air strip.

I had no challenges at all with the F-86E-25, temp didn't even get that high on 100%.

Maybe your throttle, stick or both are not working right.

Is your flight stick old?  Have you gone into the controls and input adjustments and messed with things like deadband for all the axis?  I've had problems with the sensitivity increments being to high and the controls were too touchy on other a/c.

I don't know anything about memory leaks.

And again this is just straight BAT I'm using.

All your help worked out. It turn out for me even 800ºC (a little less than 1500ºF) is a little too much.

As a recap, I had two issues
1. Oil was too hot so I burnt up. That is solved
2. Memory leaks prevent planes from taking off. I just restart the game or the computer.

Both my RAM sticks and my motherboard are super old, so it's more likely the issue comes from me than from BAT (or Asura's DGen).

Thanks everyone!!!!!!!
