Background and History by Lars
This is a South African Air Force campaign covering 1940 to 1945 in 107 missions.  I understand one in seven aircraft in the Mediterranean were South African and all crew were volunteers.

We chose 2 Squadron ‘The Flying Cheetahs’ as the campaign unit as they were central to most of the action, as was Piet during his time with Il2 Sturmovik 1946.

The SAS community has responded to help create this with its usual enthusiasm. Whiskey Sierra had created the medals and promotions and Hayate has created many new relevant skins.

I have investigated recent AI converters with a goal of creating a SAAF speech pack and through micmonster have managed to create an African Squadron speech pack of sorts. If anyone wishes to develop it further feel free to do so. Marcost has been excellent help steering me through the Audacity programme and how the Il2 1946 speech packs work. We may get away with an English South African leader and Afrikaans ground controller for now. The other voices are ‘visiting’ Africans.

The first section of 25 missions covers the operations in Northern Kenya against the Italian Air Force. A few airmen covered an area larger than France, so were spread very thin. The Italians started with a decent supply support but when the Allies built up enough to support an offensive the odds turned in favour of the Allies. Both sides were fairly evenly matched in this small unit combat warfare.

The next section moves the action to North Africa where the SAAF fighter and bomber Squadrons come into their own. Although usually met by more experienced enemies with better aircraft, the fighter squadrons, often the only escort units available,  kept the bombers safe even though losing many of their own. They were in the forefront of all the main battles, both in retreat and advance across the desert. They were heavily involved in pushing the enemy back into Tunisia, and the SAAF 7 Fighter Wing were instrumental in stopping a renewed last push at the Mareth Line which was acknowledged by the Eighth Army. Over 200 Kittyhawks swept the enemy aside in a mass fighter-bomber attack. Due to fps issues we have had to limit the numbers but still create an intense immersion for you.

The invasion of Sicily came next but 2 Squadron needed a rest so reappeared in the conquest of Italy. By this time there were few opportunities for air combat but plenty for ground attack.

This campaign consists of 107 missions, from East Africa in 1940 to Italy in 1945, via North Africa. You will fly several different aircraft such as Furies, Gladiators, Hurricanes, Mohawks, Tomahawks, Kittyhawks, and Spitfires. B25 Mitchells were used as a substitute for SAAF B26 Marauders due to skinning problems and FM issues. Missions will range from all out dogfights to recon sorties to ground attacks and more.

In addition to the campaign, we offer you a new African voice pack and almost the whole SAAF skin set by Hayate. Hayate has created skins for the Baltimore but that aircraft is not yet in BAT Flashpoint; we will update the campaign and include Hayate’s Baltimore when the plane is available in BAT.

Installation
For Piet's Sake is a continuation of our earlier Piet’s Cheetahs campaign. If you flew the previous version and stopped before saving the final mission, you can install these campaign files over the previous version and continue where you left off, keeping your rank and stats. Or, if you install this campaign in a new directory you will fly all 107 missions from start to finish.

This campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack, available here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?board=264.0

It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable.

Extract the zip file to a temporary directory.
• Copy the decompressed Missions folder and the decompressed PaintSchemes folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder. If prompted to overwrite, select Yes to overwrite existing files This will load Whiskey Sierra’s SAAF campaign folder as well as the campaign itself.
• In the New Pilot Career page, choose South Africa in the Air Force selection drop-down. Choose Piet’s Cheetahs in the Career drop-down.
• We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
• The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.

We highly recommend that you install the Larschance South Africa Voice pack available here: SAAF Voice Pack

To install the SAAF Voice Pack unzip the contents and copy the #WAW3 and Samples folders to your IL-2 main directory. This SAAF pack is the first of several that Lars will be releasing. He will be posting more on those in the future.

Credits
Hayate provided countless SAAF skin packs for this campaign, including but not limited to SAAF Hawker Fury, Gladiator, Hurricane, Dragon Rapide, Hawker Hart, P-36A4, Bostons, P-40s, B-25s, and Spitfires. We have Hayate Italian skin packs for Ca-133, CR32, CR42, Ro37 bis, and SM-79. And we have Vichy skins for the Potez 63.11. In addition we used some skins from the BAT skin pack. These include skins by VPmedia, Archie, Chip Eafis, and Mission Bug. We could not identify the author of all skins, so if you see something here that we missed, please let us know and we will add them to the list. Thanks to you all!

Whiskey Sierra created a SAAF Campaign folder for us to use. The folder includes appropriate background, ranks and medals and is included as part of the installation.

Marcost was extremely helpful and supportive of the creation of the South African Voice Pack.

Many thanks to the BAT team for developing, maintaining, and improving the BAT Modpack.

That's cool, can't wait to fly this.

Salute to all involved for creating this.
And a Prost, chin, chin to our Piet

Best wishes

Thanks Von and Lars

As an Allied flyer only, I'm always interested in flying Commonwealth campaigns and missions.

Well done, and a good memorial effort.

The SAAF Voice pack opens with no problem.  Somehow Winzip refuses to decompress the campaign.  I had to change it to open with Windows File Explorer and use the inherent Windows decompression feature.  But at least that worked.

Overall, Bravo...

Nice voice pack.  I created a JSGME Mod pack... although it is storage-wasteful, it is a good way to try new features.  Almost 600MB altogether.  Outstanding work, particularly considering the skins and mission content.  Totally worth the download and play.

Great work for Piet's Remembrance.

We thank you all for the kind words. On behalf of Lars, Hayate, Marcost, Whiskey Sierra, and myself, let me say that nothing pleases us more than hearing that you too think this is a fitting tribute to Piet.

Thank you for the feedback. All those hours of research and computer work have paid off it seems. We were relieved to finally finish it. It was a lot of emails and fun along the way. Piet was probably watching over our shoulders, or was he the squadron mascot Jacko in a previous life..

Let us also not forget the other contributers who have passed away in recent years, the latest being Gubi.

For those of you who are competitive, on my final test run I was promoted to Kolonel with 6 medals, 41 air kills and 37 ground kills, but lost 12 aircraft. The aces among you will probably double that. lol.

The new speech pack took a lot of meticulous work and I will shortly be issuing the original version, along with several other AI and Human voice packs for your pleasure, courtesy of both micmonster and my own recordings of neighbours. With Von's help I hope to present you with some more speech packs soon.

I'm using a 101tfs' model for Hawker Fury.
So the 1024 skin provided by the Mission Builder does not apply, just applies as the default skin of 101tfs' Hawker Fury.
Still, the mission works well.
Thank you !!

PS : I think it would be great if a skin master like Stanislao could step up and make Fury's 2048 skins of this mission... :D

Why 2048, gunny ? 1024 should be standard, with 2048 just being an option.

I'm sorry. My expression was not correct.
To be precise, the skin of the stock version Hawker Fury and the 101tfs Hawker Fury's is different.
So I meant, can't it fit the skins provided in this mission to the 101tfs' model, and if it is able to be made the skins like that, let's make 2048 skins as well as 1024 skins.
Thank you.
