AI bombers dropping one bomb at a time
« on: December 13, 2023, 05:17:44 AM »

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed the same behavior from the ai?

Seems to be okay in QMB but single missions/ campaign (I'm using DGEN for dynamic campaigns) ai bombers just drop one bomb at a time and then just circle the target occasionally dropping another one. For heavy bombers this means they have to be over the target for a really long time to get through their whole payload.

I have no additional mods installed on top of BAT.

This is normal.

There are different ways to make a bomber attack in the FMB.

Different a/c will act differently depending how you set the ground attack way point, even altitude or load outs will change it for some.

If you set a ground attack way point sitting over the target, and you don't "set target", then they will make multiple runs on the target with both bombs and guns (if it has guns to fire).  This is good if you have the a/c attacking something like an airfield that is spread out.

If you "set target" for the ground attack way point and connect it to an object or other target, they will drop their whole bomb load.

Also, there is the "aim point" mission tool to use in the FMB, that will chage how the bomber acts.  I have not used this for bombers, but have for P-47s.

Another trick I have done is when building an airfield attack, instead of using "Stationary Aircraft" I would use "Aircraft" and connect them to generic spawn points and a very long delay time.  Your attacking aircraft will hit these a/c more aggressively.

If anyone knows of other ways to manipulate attacking behavior I would like to know also.

As Wing Walker said, it depends on the a/c type and (probably) other factors. I make missions in FMB only (BAT, UP) and observe such "single bomb" behaviour sometimes, but not very often. In one of the last few missions, for example: DB-3s and SB-2s dropped all bombs at once, R-5s made continuous attacks dropping a part of the bombload one by one, one TB-3 flight dropped all bombs, another TB-3 flight dropped some bombs over the target and the rest on the way back. In all cases, "set target" was connected to the objects on the ground.

"Aimpoint" from C&C is a very useful tool, indeed. Yet it has a problem: it can cause other bombers (in other parts of the map) to drop their bombs as well. You might need to do several tests to make it work properly.

We are on mission 20 of the Big Bird campaign (B17s) in coop mode and I haven't noticed this single drop issue as yet.  We either get the entire load being dropped at once or sometimes not at all.  The missions all use the GATTACK waypoint over the target with no SET TARGET.

If you are using "heavies" then I believe that the distance from your IP (last waypoint before bomb release) and the bomb release point is important.  For our missions I ensure at least 30-40km for the bomb run.  Altitude is 14,000ft or more (14,000ft seems to be a decent height for seeing the target come into view at a reasonable distance in the bomb sight.  Higher than that and you are almost over the target before being able to see it properly)

Hope this helps.

My latest "heavy" mission has B-24's at normal altitude, 20,000ft, with a full bomb load of 500lbs'ers and a "ground attack" way point over the runway of an airfield, not target set as.  They release a train of bombs and they hit at the waypont ground attack marker.

Another missions of an airfield attack I have A-20Gs with 4 500lbs bombs,  with a ground attack waypoint marker right on the runway of an airfield, no target set, and they drop 2, come back, drop 2, then come back and make gun runs a few times.

I observe the same behaviour of A-20G. Probably, this a/c is coded as a fighter-bomber. As Il-2, Il-10, R-5 and SSS, FW-190F, Hs 123, etc.

It would be cool if gunners could have that same behavior. I know PB4Y-2's and -1's at least would use their gunners to strafe targets at low levels also.
