My Quick Rant on IL-2, BAT, and Great old flight sims....
« on: March 09, 2024, 12:03:43 PM »

OK first off let me say again the amount of content on this site is just amazing... so much work and that's what I love about moddable games... replayability.

I haven't played IL-2 in probably 6 yrs... but I've been having so much fun with other old flight sims I had to fire it up... I'm pretty much only a single-player guy, used to play multi with IL-2 back in the day but it got boring without the feel of making progress in a campaign, etc.

Anyways, now I sorta remember why I shelved IL-2... the damage model is certainly wonky... you might get an attractive fire and some smoke from hits but eventually you get an explosion with little plane parts flying everywhere... not realistic.

My second big gripe is on the flight models of the mod aircraft (many are very nicely done, lots of work, kudos)... I was mainly interested in flying the WW1 stuff and Golden Age stuff in BAT .. when I finally got the darn huge thing downloaded and working (lots of hiccups mostly my fault) - and fired up a Fokker DVII in quick mission... I went ... ohhh...that's a shame.  With all the IL-2 spins, wind, etc turned off it got a little better but still ... RB3D is way more realistic and how darn old is that wonderful game?

Then I tried my favorite plane a Heinkel He-51 in quick mission.... Ohhh... like flying a stubborn (I'm turning this way) Log with no control surfaces... I exaggerate but not too much... even with all the flight model "extras" turned off ... the enemies often freak out and go into a weird ass spin , hit the ground...darn I wanted to shoot you... I don't even see any parachutes.

Here's the deal in my opinion.  Both Jane's WW2F and CFS2 (CFS3 sucked... no mods and the AI is retarded on both sides) .. are better games.  Laugh all you want, but at the end of the day the experience is more addictive and fun ... better damage models (CFS2 especially, the little explosions are darn realistic and you can hear the subtle shock wave and spark spurtzes, etc) ... Jane's with ACD (advanced combat designer) is a HOOT - you have instant action - up to 30 flights in random fashion and you get a sky filled with smoke, etc...

Both Jane's WW2F and CFS2 are easily moddable with regards to flight models, terrain, new 3D plane models etc...

I have the mod CDs etc for Jane's, quite a bit of terrains, planes, Utilities including 3D editor, etc. but I wish folks would fire it up and start modding.  Thing is you only have 3 fighters and about the same bombers on each side at a time but all of these things are moddable and the Mission Builder is the easiest most logical thing I have ever seen..  I have recently made some skins , sound mods,  moved an airdrome, etc which required a bit of tweaking with the terrain 3D prog.

The way to do it is take a modular approach - say I want to design a spanish civil war campaign - well,  get together a suitable terrain and some 3D plane models and skins missions, campaign and you're there - the Skinmaster mod enabler is straightforward for packing/unpacking mods.

OK my rant wasn't so "quick" ... BTW.... there is a "new" version of Jane's WW2F downloadable with the title "2023" or similar, including DGVoodoo glide wrapper etc which I think is geared to Win10 - the stock one runs fine on my Win7 comp.. I have found a different wrapper which works better on my computer, I will probably upload it to that same site - glide is not needed but it does make the clouds etc look a bit more realistic.

Il2 was supposed to be a WW2 sim . So it's no surprise that the WW1 planes are feeling a bit off. I agree with you on the damage model part, for most of the time il2 damage model is great except for those big explosions. Another thing that I would take from cfs2 was the instant action . With a few clicks, you get a sky filled to the brim with so many planes and the damage model is so great. I remember not playing the campaign and just spending hours on the instant action . But il2 is still great even now if you play for most of the time the WAW module , then you won't feel anything off

Blimey! For a fleeting moment, I was utterly gobsmacked, thinking you were about to declare that CFS2 or WW2F were superior to IL-2. You had me on tenterhooks, mate!

Cracking bit of satire, that was.

And naturally, if CFS2 and WW2F were the bee’s knees of the gaming world, it would be as clear as day why we’d grumble about the WW1 and interwar flight models being a bit pants in a WW2+ flight sim… I’m having a giggle just thinking about it!

Cheerio!

Having grown up with both CFS, Janes and IL-2? Combat Flight Simulator's flight model was horrible.. not as smooth as IL-2's which feels the same as Jane's WWII Fighters. Dare I say it even Crimson Skies' slippery FM was better than CFS and MFS respectively.

The one thing that really tickled me pink in CFS2&3 was how the AI kept doing the hokey cokey in flat circles when they were meant to be having a proper "dogfight". It was like watching what you’d get if you asked a 3-year old, "Oi, how do aeroplanes have a barney with each other?"
Absolute comedy gold, that was!

Each to their own. RB3D remains the only game I ever took back to the shop. I guess I was a graphics whore even then.  ;D

Flight models for modded aircraft are indeed not quite good most of the times... It has nothing to do with "Il-2 is just a game so it has limitations", no, the game engine allows to create a fairly faithful approximation of how real aircraft behaved, and faithful approximation is all we need, really.

But the pool of people who can edit flight models with confidence of what they're doing is very small. Of people currently active in Il-2 modding I can think only of two people, Storebror and Vasya.

But even then, to create the said approximation one needs either the accurate flight manuals and test data, or the actual mock up tested in the wind tunnel (heh).

It's not a problem for common aircraft, one could find a good array of data on aircraft like Corsair or 109... But when we talk about the stuff like Me-209 or A7M - good luck finding any relevant info on them
