History and Background by Larschance
New Zealand is a comparatively small nation which had limited manpower for use in warfare. The Kiwis, by which they are affectionately known, provided 55,000 airmen and airwomen for the battle fronts of WW2. 10,000 were spread across the RAF Squadrons in Europe and the Middle East (485 to 490 Squadrons were nominally New Zealand manned), 30,000 operated in the homeland assisting with the training and preparation of new units for the front, and 15,000 fought in the Pacific theatre. It is the latter area we chose to fly our campaign as it used purely New Zealand squadrons of fighters, bombers, and recon aircraft as part of the RNZAF proper, as opposed to a subsidiary of the RAF.

Unfortunately, we do not have a Kiwi speech pack so had to use the entertaining Australian pack. I tried to create the Kiwis in AI but only managed one credible voice which can be heard in the CW speech pack alongside other nations. If our Kiwi friends would like to create a voice pack we will happily assimilate it into the campaign.

You will be flying Buffaloes and Hurricane IIBs over Singapore, then P40K, M, and Ns over Bougainville, then F4U-1Ds over Bougainville. It is recommended you add WxTech’s mod for the P-40s which reduces the tendency to catch fire easily.

Some missions are in the 20 to 50 minute time range and others can be up to 3 hours! The latter poses a question – do you go for the extra kill and risk damage that may hinder you getting back. Fuel and ammo can be critical especially for the longer range missions where the enemy may be loitering later with intent. We have tried to reduce the stutter and loss of FPS but different PCs offer different results. My old laptop seems to cope and the multiple speed command can speed up the longer missions.

The Kiwis gained a great deal of respect from their Allies. The American bomber crews usually demanded them as a close escort as the enemy rarely got through to hit the bombers. At least one American Officer used their ground crews in preference to his own to keep his unit in top condition.

With the enemy being more experienced and flying better aircraft at usually higher altitudes, the Kiwis in their so-called inferior fighters the airmen did their country proud.

Installation
This campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack, available here at the SAS website:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?board=264.0

It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable.

To install:

•   Extract the Kiwis.zip file to a temporary directory.
•   Copy the decompressed Missions folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder.
•   In the New Pilot Career page, choose RNZAF in the Air Force selection drop-down.
•   Choose Kiwis Can Fly in the Career drop-down.
•   We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
•   The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.

Credits
Many thanks to the BAT team for developing, maintaining, and improving the BAT Modpack. And in all of our campaigns, we make liberal use of Kurfurst’s mission templates, available at the Mission 4 Today site.

We all know how valuable skins are to campaign building and enjoyment. This campaign uses skins by Phas3e, Macwan, Knochenlutscher, PhilK, HBPencil, and Mangas. At least, those are the skins whose authors we have been able to identify. If you spot a skin here that did not receive proper credit please let us know and we will rectify the oversight.

Excellent, thanks guys.

Look forward to the Solomon Islands P-40 phase.
I'll see if I can shoehorn the Kiwi voice actor in somewhere.

Will try this later. Dad's cousin died in a plane crash. And Mum's brother jumped out of a Ram Kangaroo, with the rest of his squad, and got hit by a hail of MG 42 bullets. They'd have been dead before they hit the ground. Three weeks before the war ended.

cheers

David

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.

This was difficult to get the balance right, in reducing the stutter on large dogfights to creating decisions on longer missions. Do you go for an extra kill and risk damage on the long run home. The Buffalo, P40 and F4U are all tough but you never know if that engine will suddenly quit.

Due to my increasingly poor eyesight I have to close in for the kill so received damage from gunners, let alone more numerous enemy fighters. On one occasion I flew under a Sally, having set it on fire, and it tore off my fin and rudder. I managed to turn for home but as soon as my speed fell the P40 dropped into a spin so I had to bail in the end. I made it to near home base and was rescued rather than the sharks got me. My final test run saw me promoted to Wing Commander with 5 medals, 38 air kills and 14 ground kills. I lost 15 aircraft, 6 to gunners, 6 to fighters, and 3 deaths. Thank goodness for the refly button when testing.

Have fun.

  • no skill just simple, but seek the best beauty !!

This campaign works well on BAT 4.1.

And with a little bit of trouble, it can also work on SAS Modact 5.3.

I couldn't get a single object for SAS Modact 5.3...Riverboat1.

I'd appreciate it if someone could extract it from BAT mod. I'd like to include Riverboat2 when extracting it.

I'd like to extract Koper1 as well. This is an object that I've missed in the different campaign for SAS Modact 5.3.

Here's why I'm trying to this campaign run on SAS Modact 5.3.

Thank you.
