Airships as Moving and Static Ship Objects
My ideas typically get me uninvited to most meetings and conversations, but here it goes.
Today we have Airships as Static Aircraft objects (besides the aircraft type Airships). Would it be possible to create airships using the current models but making them as static and moving “ship” types?
For example, take the USS Long Island (air.Zeppelin_ZRCV). The idea is to create 3-4 versions of that Airship:
* One at altitude of Static Plane (to be able to go in and out of a Hangar)
* One at around 200m
* One at around 500m
* One at around 3000m
Weapons:
* As a ship, the guns should be functional, or should be added, for example
-- 20-40mm guns or howitzer (as a gunship); if only in one side I recommend having them on the left/port side, like the AC-47
Other potential features:
* Beacon
* Searchlight pointing down or slanted (maybe activated at night)
Carrier Property
* Real aircraft can attach to Airships if there is a way to customize the catapults to be the hanging hooks, and allowing aircraft to attach/launch, maybe recover (not sure if that would be possible)
* Allow any aircraft to attach (seplane, gliders, etc.)
Airships crossed vast distances over the Ocean, and since they do not behave normally for proper takeoff and landing, having these would add some interesting scenery, as well as provide some defense or attack capabilities.
For example, attaching 4 Stukas to an Airship at 3000m, allowing the planes to dive bomb. That could come from a moving or static Airship at 3000. Gliders would glide down, etc.
A Con would be that unless there is a way to allow it to go through land through code, the only way to make them move over land would be to manually place the coordinates in the “mis” file.
Close to the ground they would serve as artillery/AA, and would provide interesting scene in bases, or chance encounters over the sea.
For DOF, TGA and WOW there are already Airships. For JTW, I would recommend a version with an all white skin.
Anyhow, maybe this is not a great idea but I could see some interesting use in mission design.
