History and Background by LarsJagdgeschwader 6 was the last Luftwaffe Fighter Wing to be formed in World War Two. Due to the devastating losses among the existing units in 1944 many of the non-fighter units were disbanded and their aircrews transferred to new hastily trained fighter units. These were mainly JG4 who received the ex-bomber and recon pilots, consequently slaughtered to a large degree due to their slower methodical mindset. The other new wing was JG6, made up of pilots from the twin engined units and some single engined night fighter units.

https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=3211JG6 consisted of I and II JG6 equipped with Fw190As and later Ds, some sources say G models also. The pilots were mainly from ZG26, previously flying Bf110s and Me410s against the mass bomber formations at high altitude in the West. They were now retrained as ground attack and interceptors at low altitude. Some records have survived describing their activities but we chose to recreate the efforts of the third sub unit, III/JG6.

Due to a lack of surviving documents sources vary as to its origins. The latest research states that it was formed from III/JG300 who flew night missions against the RAF bombers in defence of the Reich. Thus, the pilots were already familiar with their aircraft, the Bf109G. The unit was involved in Operation Bodenplatte, the Luftwaffe attack on Allied bases on 1st January 1945. They lost 19 pilots in that raid so had to be rebuilt and sent to the Eastern Front to defend the armies against the advance of Russian forces.

We start based in Poland in February 1945 where the Luftwaffe were surprisingly successful during that month in helping stem the enemy advance. Being near the factories and shorter supply lines helped, but the constant moves between bases led to a disruption in both supplies and men. Morale remained fairly high to the end when the unit was disbanded on 8th April.

You will fly the Bf109G14AS, Bf109G10 and Bf109K4. Your opposition will be among the latest and best Russian aircraft, who usually flew in small escorted formations and lots of them!
InstallationThis campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack, available here at the SAS website:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?board=264.0It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable without these features. For example, enemy aircraft and targets will not appear without these mods.

To install:
• Extract the JG6.zip file to a temporary directory.
• Copy the decompressed Missions and PaintSchemes folders to your IL-2 1946 root folder.
• In the New Pilot Career page, choose Luftwaffe in the Air Force selection drop-down.
• Choose JG6 Backs to the Wall in the Career drop-down.
• We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
• The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.

Many thanks to the BAT team for developing, maintaining, and improving the BAT Modpack. As in all of our campaigns, we make liberal use of Kurfurst’s mission templates, available at the Mission 4 Today site.

CanonUK made the Bf-109 skins we use in this campaign. This campaign uses other skins from the BAT install and we do not know the author(s). If you spot a skin here that did not receive proper credit please let us know and we will rectify the oversight.
