Custom F-8 skins not showing
« on: August 15, 2024, 01:43:27 AM »

Hey, I'm working on a custom F-8 skin based off of mm's template (found here https://www.mi-psi.eu/cs/f-8.html), I exported it as a bmp but when I open IL2 it doesn't appear. I checked the log.lst and I think this might be the most relevant part of the issue.

Code: [Select]
[2024-08-15 16:52:15.759 UTC +10] dT:    0 INTERNAL ERROR: '3DO/Plane/F-8E/summer/skin1o.tgb' Has non squared size or != 1024
[2024-08-15 16:52:15.759 UTC +10] dT:    0 INTERNAL ERROR: TGA '3DO/Plane/F-8E/summer/skin1o.tgb' has unsupported format
[2024-08-15 16:52:23.596 UTC +10] dT:    0 INTERNAL ERROR: '3DO/Plane/F-8E/summer/skin1o.tgb' Has non squared size or != 1024

mm's skins are amazing too btw and the templates are a godsend for my campaign project. All their skins seems to work just fine for the F-8 so maybe I'm just exporting it wrong. I use GIMP and I export it with indexed image mode, though even doing the same thing in Photoshop ends up with the same result. If anyone's got a fix for this I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you even know what to do to get a new skin to work as a "default" skin? It seems you don't. It seems you are messing up the formats here.
The skin1o.tgb  is very obviously wrongly formatted, I suppose you can see that yourself?

There is nothing magic about it, it just is an alpha layer tga file, renamed to tgb. But if you saved it as bmp, that is is wrong. When exporting to tga, also always uncheck the RLE compression. What about the other three files in the summer folder? You need those too.

I see, so where or how would I be able to export the tga file to set it as default? I'm a bit unfamiliar in this realm of skin making.

In my experience the good old Paint.net (free download) is a very simple image editor that will allow you to convert BMP to TGA including the alpha layer and will also remember you about the RLE compression it is easier to use than GIMP and more reliable than IRFAN view (that tend to forget about the alpha)
