Torpedoes are Messed Up in BAT?
« on: October 19, 2024, 12:58:47 PM »

I haven't tried to run my torpedo attack missions for a while...

...but torpedoes don't work with "fragile torpedoes" turned on, and there is no trail in the water anymore to tell if they run?

It made it really hard to know if the torpedoes were even functioning, took several tries at modifying the mission before realizing that they ran without a trails now.

With "fragile torpedoes" on I could not get AI to drop them and have them work at all until I shut off the fragile.  Even though they were only 5m high... with a speed slightly lower than the required speed.

Do the numbers now have to be spot on for "fragile torpedoes" to work, or will it even work then?

You know that you can be too low for the torp to arm, right?

Second question as usual: What BAT version are you on and do you have any addition weapons mods installed?

We had a similar discussion a while ago. No they are not in a general sense in the most up to date setup.
Having said that, there are a great many modded torps around and there may be some outliers which have better or worse behavior. But generally broken, no, they are not.

For Example,, Go low Speed about 280 Km/h or 260 Km/h and Go low Altitude about 45m or 25m to Drop a Torpedo,, Keep your Distance away from the Enemy ships or Supply ships avoid Enemy AA Fire.....  use your Sight To Aim Carefully which Ships is Moving... If you drop too late when you drop a Torpedo,, The Message Shows Torpedo Not arm Meaning Torpedo is a Busted Dud..

I have no mods, just using 4.2.2 (can't update to the latest version for some reason).

So, the problem is that the AI can't get set to the parameters for dropping a successful torpedo even 1 time with "fragile torpedoes" on.

In my testing I was using auto pilot and watching the other AI planes to see (I should of flew to test).

I can fly the plane myself and maintain the parameters to get a successful hit, but again AI can't.  The parameters seem to be the MAXIMUM numbers, AI was always just 5 meters high (at 35m rather than 30m or lower) and you need to pull the stick back for a minor angle up for the drop (AI won't do that)...

There IS a torpedo track, but it is very faint and hard to see, and you don't get a successful drop from AI with fragile torpedoes on to see it.

So even when I shut off fragile torpedoes I couldn't see the torp trail from the plane after the drop, flying 1 or 2 seconds past and its not visible.  I only saw my own because of "ordinance view"...  (I lowered my cloud detail before for my large scale missions not sure if that did anything)

If you have missions with torpedo planes you have to shut off fragile torps if you are trying to get AI to hit the target.

Realistic torpedos (fragile setting) use an angle of entry to water max/min value, a height max/min value and speed of water impact value.

The planes AI torpedo aiming does seem to read the torpedo running speed data, to get hits.  But the plane attack altitude and speed must be set so torpedo angle of entry to water is within torpedo data limits.  Higher plane speed reduces angle of impact, slower increases angle of impact.  Plane altitude does reverse.

Player testing will find a good speed/altitude setting for plane/torpedo pair to work, then you should use those values in your .mis file for attack waypoint.  (or plane data weapon file of random mission generators).

We touched on this topic earlier.
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,72052.0.html

I achieved good torpedo runs with "fragile" on, but only for a few selected aircraft and after many fine-tuning steps. My final decision was similar to Wing Walker's: Turn off "fragile."
