In-game SAM(s) guide and electronic warfare.
« on: October 27, 2024, 10:04:41 AM »

Hi

Is there a guide to the different SAM(s) in-game, as well as how the electronic counter-measures, such as the ALQ-176 work?
Also, how does the landscape work in relation to 'blocking' the radar?

Kind Regards,

Probably not really. The thing with these decade old mods is, the documentation (if there ever was any to begin with) was often eaten by time.

Yes, radar guidance and missile homing capabilities vary from missile to missile and are coded into the missile. But what did the maker do exactly and is it realistic? Nobody knows any details anymore unless it gets reverse engineered. (and frankly, most people probably did never care, as long as there was some basic shooting and hitting...)

You could do two things.
Do a few test runs with different setups and share the results. I know the SA-2 has a low level limit for example and you can fly under her radar  ...

Do a search for the original mods (maybe not just on this site...) and see if there even was something said about these things back at the time they were made. But in many cases, documentation of these finer details was just left out.

Most probably, the landscape can help with SA-2 and SA-75 - I noticed that AI can successfully destroy them after approaching very low.
If you attack SAM equipped ship from the shoreside and there is a mountain ridge between you and the target, missiles are not launched at you until you cross that ridge.
As for ECM, I didn't notice a difference with ships. Not sure about ground-based SAMs.

Thanks.
Is it possible to evade any missiles once if you see one coming and is there anything you can do if you are out of Chaff / Flares (or should you immediately eject if that is the case)?

I did manage to evade SAMs launched from ships (Amazon frigate, as I remember) in F-16 but it was not easy. Head on course, the distance from the ship of 5-10 km and I could see the missile trail. When I was hit by the land-based SAM at high altitudes, I didn't see the missile. But my experience is limited.

Depends on if BAT uses my SAMs.

At least the beta version works for me in BAT 4.3 WAW with the stationary objects. At that time Germany had (what if option) the "Wasserfall" as one of the first anti-aircraft missiles in development and that's how I use it.
