..so, the" glaze pit" is an optical illusion: ..it is  actually a roll bar over side by side sitting and rounded open air crew access.

"construction
The T 29 was a full-metal plane with corrugated sheet cladding and a 59 kW Junkers L-1 engine.
The distinctive feature for a sports machine at that time was the adjacent seats in the open cockpit. This should improve the use as a training aircraft.
 Above the cockpit was a kind of roll bar, which protected the occupants in case of rollover. This gave the plane the nickname "iron".[1]
The use of the so-called Junkers double wings according to DRP-No. 396621 (German Reich Patent) of 12 June 1921, as they were later used on the
Junkers G 38 and the Junkers Ju 52/1m."
