1440 and 4k
« on: November 18, 2024, 11:16:18 AM »

Hi all,

Since October I am retired and now I have time to enjoy my hobbies, and IL2 is top on list.
I have a few questions; sorry but I am not native English so I hope to explain well my questions and doubt, at the end now I am an "old" man, maybe a little "obsolete" :-) on those "technicals", so please help me :-)

I just bought a new rig (ryzen 7800x3d and 4070 ti super).

I remember that windows 11 should be no problem, now my question is about monitors resolution, for two topics:
- I still have to buy a new monitor and have to decide if 1440 or 4k, but I want to be sure that buying a 4k i will have not problems in what I see on the screen (does il2-1946 manage the 4k rdefinition in conf.ini ?)
- and decide if 16:9 or 21:9; i mean to understand if I could have as a result planes/cockpits "stretched" or anything strange in the visual sizes

I know I have to change the resolution in conf.ini; so I ask you if it should work also with 4k ?

So what happens in 1440 and/or 4k to the HUD, Order/Command pad, radio chatter subtitles etc ? will the characters become smaller or their size will be the same as in 1920x1080 ?
If I buy a 4k, should IL2-1946 work fine with a 1440 resolution defined in conf.ini ? or in this case I should the "native" resolution of the monitor ?

And if instead I will buy a 21:9 should it work fine with IL2-1946 ?
Here again what will happen to the HUD etc ? Will they be "in the corner" like in 1920 x 1080 or not ? will they be move "inside" nearer to the bottom center of the screen ?
And if I buy the 21:9 but have problems with what I see, is there a way to show IL2-1946 like in a 16:19, with two vertical black bars on right and left ?

I hope I explained my doubts and hope you can help me

Thank you o this great community and long life to IL2-1946

I don't know about ultrawide, but 4k is no problem.
Nvidia and AMD both let you run an emulated higher resolution as a form of anti-aliasing, the Nvidia version is called DSR and will let you run games at 4K on a 1080p screen etc.
The interface does scale, but I suggest you try it out for yourself to make sure things aren't going to get too tiny.

On Ultrawide most games get cropped on the top and bottom, so your missing a bit of immage you would have had if you had a 4K screen.

I run IL-2 on a 4K screen and it works fine, use these setting in the Conf.ini:

Code: [Select]
[window]
width=3840
height=2160
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
WideScreenFoV=1
UIColor=0
UIDetail=5
UIBackground=rnd
Use3RendersUI=0

P.S. you might need to Right Click on the il2fb.exe and open Properties > Compatibility > Change high DPI settings > Adjust High DPI scaling, and change that to Aplication (mine is in Dutch so i am not sure what it says in English)
Otherwise your game might not be fully rendered on screen.
