Community roots/ tension?
« on: December 10, 2024, 09:40:15 AM »

So, with for how long I have followed IL-2 1946, it's community and finally deciding to actually get a little bit involved.  I've recently run into an old post in 2019 on the IL-2 Air Combat Website regarding the F-51. I guess claiming it was "Taken" without permission or something? Having an unauthorized copy?

Something tells me things like this spread deeper throughout the community, but I am curious and want to be enlightened on if more situations like this exist.

To me, I wouldn't think you would need permission or have people complaining about certain vehicles, planes, and such being combined to be put into a mudpack, or that you would even need permission to use it because... from what I've seen. I don't think there's any profit made with these mods and almost all are of freewill and time.

Going as far to use "Unauthorized" in a mod seems very odd too me.

The link to the post is here

The point of this post is not to cause any sort of drama, but to get some more insight on how situations or divides like this happen and how far spready they are into the community, seeing this game has been out for what's about to be 2 whole decades, and has a very widespread modding scene behind it.

We have this:  https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,41587.0.html

But in the end, we are all semi-intelligent (I exclude myself) and should understand that if you put anything (ANYTHING) in the internet, it is no longer yours.  We are decent here and like to give credit where it is due and we respect each other's work.  But in the end if you put it in the Internet, you have lost control of it.  Anyone can do anything with it.  And we should not expect that everyone will have ethics or morals equal to ours, if at all.

Heck, these are unauthorized mods anyway (from an official license/software standpoint), like most mods, and arguing about credit when it is not yours to take is silly, like you kinda stated.  The publisher does not do anything although they could if they really wanted to, after all the EULA is pretty clear (from the standpoint that only their lawyers understand it).

Back in the days there where a good number of tense situations, deep divides in the community and clash of personalities that are difficult to understand today and explain to somebody that didn't lived those situations. In any case let's just say that a good number of modders where very protective of their work and had a lot of suspicion over sites and individuals getting advantages or making money by publishing or editing their work. Today everything seems very quite just because the community is much smaller many people and sites are not there anymore so there is not much to fight for. In any case better not to stir waters and by the way we still have a rule in place that to prevent heated exchanges forbid direct links to that site.

if you upload someone elses mod in modding areas for other games or even add it to a modpack everyone even including people who had nothing to do with the mod get really really angry scream mod piracy at you then ban you on the spot and thats for free mods

people create a mod specifically to share with other people and now that its being shared they dont want it to be shared???

Absolutely not our cup of tea or style statement here at SAS. We can't control how others handle things elsewhere though.
Here, one thing's for sure: We're neither the modding police nor the Copyright Protection Agency. Cheers to that!
