Hello.

I got a new PC with very good specs a couple of months ago. I'm having some frustration with IL-2 1946, because I am having heavy FPS drops near any non-negligible number of ground objects. I checked, and this is the case EVEN with no mods installed (stock IL-2). The RAM is set to 1024mb, tried installing the IL-2 Selector on the stock game and doing the same and still.

The ONLY thing that improves FPS to a playable level is setting the Visibility Distance to "Very Low". Otherwise, FPS plummets to 15-20fps when near the ground or looking at any number of ground objects, even sitting on an airfield.

I am running the game on OpenGL and my graphics card IS being recognized by the program.

The campaign I have been using as a benchmark is the default USAAF Fighter Pilot in the Pacific dynamic campaign, on the New Guinea map. Looking around the airfield in the direction of buildings / palm trees causes the FPS plummet, even in the base game, and with BAT and no IL2GE. With Visibility Distance set to "Very Low", there is still an issue with pop-in.

I have tried various single missions and campaigns (Hell in the Pacific - Peleliu, for one), all with the same problem. For another extreme example, even with ALL settings set to minimum on BAT/IL2GE install, doing attack runs in a carrier campaign on Tarawa causes extreme, essentially unplayable FPS drop.

I would have chalked this up to BAT/IL2GE had I not tried it with the stock game. I think there is clearly something wrong in my game's configuration, and I cannot seem to find any information on the internet or on this forum about my specific issue. Perhaps I have missed something obvious in my conf.ini

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

SPECS:
RTX 4080 Super
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
64GB RAM

conf.ini pastebin url:

(won't let me post outside links. just append to the end of pastebin.com url)

Since you have the same issues with the stock game, I assume something is wrong with the graphic card settings or conf.ini.
Probably, you could try "the best" conf.ini as recommended in threads on this forum and ask AMD user to share their settings.
Maybe, to start from this one:

The "Black Death" track from the stock game is a good one for benchmarking.

I just tried a couple of things. No change at all.

First, by the best settings conf.ini, I assume you mean from this post: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,9756.msg185327.html#msg185327

I copied the settings exactly for both NVIDIA and AMD cards. My GPU is an NVIDIA card, so I don't think the AMD settings listed here matter for my case since I believe he is referring to AMD GPU's, not about my CPU. In any case, I tried both settings--no change.

To ensure that the game was utilizing my GPU and not integrated graphics (I believe it is anyways, because task manager is listing the correct GPU), I disabled the integrated graphics drivers in my device manager. No change.

If anybody thinks this is an issue with AMD CPUs and has some settings suggestions that might fix it, I'd appreciate it.

If you want to be sure that il2 uses your graphic card you can open the Nvidia control panel and assign the proper settings to il2fb.exe.In alternative right click on il2fb.exe and choose run with Nvidia gpu.

Sorry, I thought you used an AMD GPU.

Frankiek provided good advise.
There are threads about NVIDIA settings.

Just to share from the NVIDIA control panel on my aged PC:
Anisotropic filtering 16x
Antialiasing - Mode override any application settings
Antialiasing - Setting 2x
Antialiasing - Transparency 2x (Supersample)
MFAA On
Power management mode Prefer maximum performance
Vertical Sync  Off
...
Everything else is Use global setting.

i7-7700 3.60, RAM 16, GTX 1060 3GB.

No serious problems with Ultrapack and stock versions before 4.15. BAT is playable as well, just with some issues in "heavy" missions and JTW.

And I just ran TheBlackDeath.ntrk in Ultrapack. FPS at the end of the track: avg 77, max 125, min 10.
In-game Video Options are set to maximum available.

Those settings are quite... low. Antialisasing could easily be maxed out to whatever your card can dish out.

I would guess your bottleneck might be your CPU. What is the max processing power in a single core? Il-2 is 25 years old and can not operate on more than one core. So if you have a contemporary multicore CPU with a relatively low single-core performance, you have a weak system for Il-2, no matter the RAM and GPU.

Thanks for the advice, Vamp. I'll try higher settings soon - very carefully. "If it doesn't break..."  :)

This is the post processing that is running on your contemporary graphics card alone. It can take on much more complex games than this. So yeah, let that GPU sweat a bit.

i dont know why people in this thread are telling you to use an amd config while you use a nvidia graphics card and if youre using a rtx 4080 super you would have that plugged into your monitor you can only physically plug one display output into your monitor on desktop so you must choose either from your rtx 4080 super or the integrated graphics theres no need to worry about your integrated graphics because its not even plugged in

i have an amd cpu quite similar to yours and the only fps issues i get is with a large number of planes or time compression but thats normal because the game engine just cant handle it

when you benchmark your hardware using other software like cpuz etc do you get numbers similar to what your hardware should be getting?

I have found some early ~2000 era 3D games that only run at ~ 5fps on my modern MEGA pc, but they run 30fps on my old WinXP Pentium 4.
My theory is some of the newest 3D cards use 3D SOFTWARE emulation for very old DirectX or OpenGL... Or likely Microsoft may have forced it...........

Again. What is your single core power?

From CPU Benchmarks "This is relatively new CPU that contains 16 Cores and 32 Threads. The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D also has great single threaded performance that will serve well in games. Paired with a good videocard, is this CPU Good for Gaming? Yes, this is a high end chip that would be great for gaming"

Looking at your conf.ini everything seems ok my only suggestion would be to try without the
ProcessAffinityMask=85
This setting basically is telling the cpu to use the first 4 cores for Il-2 so just put a ; before this line.
