no IL-2T ever actually flew because it was just a design?
« on: December 15, 2024, 06:18:21 PM »

straight from wikipedia

Il-2T
Torpedo bomber version for the Soviet Navy with the VYa-23 cannons removed to save weight, it was able to carry a single 45 cm (18 in) torpedo.[5][46] Evidently, it was only a design as the 23rd Attack Air Regiment of the Black Sea Fleet flew regular Il-2M-3s fitted with torpedo racks as a field modification, and that no such aircraft were ever noted in the battle sortie logs.[47]

We have plenty of other paper projects in BAT.  The more the better, we can look at fictitious scenarios.  The beauty of software...

I did the Il-2T weapons mod with the addition of rockets, which was a plan...  that way we are 200% innacurate!  :D

As I recall, Il-2T appeared as a result of a genuine mistake by developers. Someone has read the interview with the veteran of one naval ShAP and has believed that it used to be a working field modification.
The pundits have discovered the error and outcried.
There were furious debates on the forums where the proponents appealed to "Il-2T" mentioned by some military experts of the 1990s (as Shavrov) and where the opponents appealed to common sense: how a 900+ kg torpedo could be carried by Il-2 even without two cannons/ammo? And with the tail stabiliser added (as it was common on torpedoes 45-36AN carried in real life) that torpedo probably would not fit under the Il-2 fuselage at all.
Even if something else besides the cannons is taken out (radio? gunner?) who will fly such an unstable and underpowered abomination to the high seas? And why bother with such a field mod at all? According to the legend, that mythical Il-2T appeared in the Black Sea in 1943 or 1944 - when the Soviets had more than enough normal torpedo carriers as Il-4 and A-20.
But the developers decided to leave it like it was.

And, of course, if there is anything you don't like there is always the double forward slash. I must have a good 30% of the WAW3 aircraft list commented out.
