Windows 10 and Dual GTS250 1GB GPUs
« on: December 15, 2024, 09:10:17 PM »

Hi everybody! I came to posess a Seagate mechanical hdd which happened to have Windows 10 Professional on it. I ran said gpus in sli with this windows 10.
The drive eventually failed. I used a usb flash drive to use the Windows 10 installer from microsofts website. All is well until I mount the 2nd gpu. After doing that, with the bridge as well, set up for SLI,
Windows will not load.  If it does load it doesnt work for more than a couple of minutes. No hardware has changed frrom the first win10 drive that would run sli. Any advice.

Wild guesses:
  • Your new Windows 10 has been updated all the way?
  • You are running the newest Nvidia drivers?
  • Your PSU can handle the load?
  • Your cards both have the same BIOS on it? You might want to try swapping them

All of the above, and make really sure your cards are properly seated, could be it feels that way but some in some cases, if the mainboard is a little bit to much to the rear of the case the card wil not sit properly in the slot but stil lock in place fine.

And try one card at a time, benchmark them both, and see if one of them has a problem.
Your cards are atleast 15 years old and i think they suffered from the bad BGA solder on the NV92 GPU chip, as it is as rebranded 8800GT with double the memory, so i would not be suprised at all if one of them is no longer functioning properly.
The latest driver is also almost 10 years old, its 341.92, you need this driver to get SLI working properly.

Use GPU-Z https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ to check the Bios versions of the Cards, (you can also use it to test your card) and on the Techpowerup site you can possibly find a newer version Bios for the same card/gpu but different brand, like for example: you have a Innotech branded card, but its the same as a Powercolor.
It wil show all the compatible bios version and compatible cards if there are any other brands using the same PCB.

I do not recommend flashing the Bios unless you are really sure how it works, but in your case since you got 2 the same cards you can always try it on one (make sure you have just one in your system wen flashing) since it only seems to work with one card now.

IL-2 does not work with SLI by default, you have to set SLI to an other mode for IL-2, use the SLI indicator to see wich one does work.
I dont have my SLI rig anymore, otherwise i could have told you exactly what setting to use.

That being said, a dual GTS 250 in SLI mode doesn't quite sound like you want gaming performance but rather like it's too cold in your flat.
The performance to be expected from such a combo is about 1.500 passmark points.
For comparison, an RTX 2080S (you get it for 200 bucks on egay) has roughly 20.000 passmark points.
Just saying, what you're trying to build there is just as good as a 20 bucks GPU plus a nice campfire.

Think he do better buying a whole new system.

I had the same mainboard (990FXA-UD3) and it alone uses a lot of power, onboard audio is better than the Soundblaster Audigy you got in there, i had a X-Fi, but the Onboard was atleast as good, so i took it out, but might depend on what speakers/setup you use.

Some cheap AMD Ryzen AM5 socket system with a M.2 SSD and sticking something current in there with atleast 8GB VRAM if you want to play some modern games, if you dont you might even be able to use the build in GPU thats inside the processor, most Ryzen "APU,s" should run this game fine.
That way you be ready for Windows 11 in the near future.
