XP's memory management is vastly different to Vista and later OS versions.
Please try to edit il2fb.ini, last section "[JVM]", and make it look like this:

Okay, quite reasonable.
The values were working for my VM, but a VM isn't a real machine.
Just trying to see whether these two values are the culprit for physical XP machines as well, so let's try lower values like these:

At a second attempt this morning I managed to launch UP2 but contrary to my expectations not UP3.4.

At the beginning of the launch of UP2 i receive an error message: Java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no DT in Java.library.path.... I suppose that this is linked to the absence of a DT.dll in 409. But the error is not critical and IL-2 starts. The system is however unstable and I had game hanging erratically at mission launch, the Black Death track freeze forcing me to terminate the app and I had a couple of CTD while quitting IL-2. Will try launching UP2 reducing the permanent size a notch.

Neither of the above entries would start B.A.T. 4.3 on auto setting.

I have an initlog.lst for both 512/128 and 256/64, plus one for it starting with manual RAM set.

Just a little past midnight so I'll post which ever you require later in the morning.

In my case I manage to launch UP3.4 with 512/128 settings however with dynamic memory the system is unstable and I had to disable vertex array to avoid a freeze at mission launch and the performance is reduced with more stutters and lower FPS while with the selector 5.1.2 and 512 of set memory UP.3.4 is my best performer. Amazingly enough I can launch UP2 with the 700/256 and even tough I still have some instability the performance is similar to the UP2 with the 5.1.2 selector and 512 of set memory. Will continue my tests

When this initlog.lst was created, the game was using static RAM settings.
I'd be particularly interested in one where Auto adjusted RAM settings are active.

Java max RAM = 1380M, Selector Auto Adjusted RAM Size = 1311MBackground: The new Selector doesn't just "guess" the maximum RAM size, it simply tries what works and what doesn't.
It is quite surprising to see that on Win XP, java.exe comes up with a max RAM setting of 1380M, but IL-2 fails to launch (from the same Java folder, just using JVM.dll instead of java.exe, which should make no difference) with even half that size.
Definitely something to dig deeper into...
