reducing stutter
« on: December 23, 2024, 09:20:11 AM »

I understand stutter is caused by the slow screen refresh rate during multiple aircraft combat. I have found on some maps such as Bulgaria that even smaller numbers such as 16 fighters v 16 bombers make aiming, let alone flying, difficult. Other maps such as Warsaw or Bessarabia do not suffer as much stutter in similar scenarios.

I do not understand why a map should influence the refresh rate so any advice would be welcome.

Those with newer faster computers may not suffer as much stutter although mass bomber formations might cause it, especially if there are lots of explosions and smoke and gun effects.

I use a ten year old Sony laptop. If I added an external HD or SSD drive with fast transfer ability would this improve the smooth flying. Or does it mean the sim still runs from the laptop system rather than the HD or SSD.

If your laptop still runs on hdd you can improve performance by swapping with ssd. It is very easy and these days also pretty cheap. I made a mirror copy of my aging hdd on  a 1T Samsung EVO ssd (but any other will work) and my laptop got a second life. Naturally remains an obsolete machine but loading of BAT went down from close to two minutes to less than 30 seconds. Stutters and temporary freeze was significantly reduced. These days 1T ssd 2.5' sata ssd drive will cost you not more than 60 Euro

Thanks Frankiek. I have ordered an SSD with USB3.2 connection and will let you know what happens.

I understand "stutter" to refer to momentary pauses interspersed between more or less steady frame rates. These can result from such activities as loading data.

It seems you are concerned with more general frame rate decreases, which derives principally from the processing speed of calculations.

I raise this distinction so that we're on the same page when discussing solutions. 😉

Could be that his particular map has a lot of ground objects, or it has a lot going on on the ground...that always kills FPS.
