Observer ( Camera ) Position in all Mosquitos Request
« on: March 23, 2025, 09:27:20 PM »

Greetings ,

I am making this request in the BAT forum , as I am currently newly flying BAT at the moment , but I think
this would be a superlative addition to all Mosquitos in all game versions , and at a relatively low
work input ( I know , I know easy to say for a non-modder ).
I am making a request for an observer position camera ( orientable , like any gunner view ) for
the observer in all DH98 Mosquitos.
Ideally this could later be developed into a functioning bombardier in the bomber versions,
and a radar operator in the NF models , but the base mod
requires only an orientable camera in the position of the observers head ( slightly forward and slightly
lower than the pilot and to his/her right side ).
This is a value returnable mod because it is equally useful both for online and offline play , and especially as it
poses a start for the possible other developments already mentioned.

Just a thought - I have had it before , but I finally remembered to write it down before my age got the better of me again.

I hope this might spark some interest among others.

Good point Kopf.
As with you, I'm not a modder in the context you're describing but I do know that in the B-17 you can switch seats between pilot and co-pilot (I use a hat switch) and look around as the co-pilot etc so I imagine the principle could be the same for the Mosquito except adjust the parameters to account for the Observer position? One of the modder gurus can no doubt shed some light on that.

Just as for the B17, the 'gunsight' view could be relocated. That's child's play once one has the extracted Body.msh (or whichever mesh has the camera hooks.) I'm not sure about the feasibility of utilizing the full 6dof capability (specifically, the translation in 3 axes), meaning that the viewpoint would be stuck in place, with just the panning action being available. Just as for the gunsight view, and for the B-17's implementation.

I can crack these out in short enough order...

Here's my first crack, showing 4 views from the altered 'gunsight view' (as is done for the B-17.) Because the pilot's armored seat back doesn't have the back side filled with polys, I've placed the 'observer' view hook a bit forward relative to his seat; I didn't like an invisible pilot seat.

The cockpits having a gun sight might best be left alone, so that the player still has available the true gunsight view.

Here's the mesh viewer showing the relocated camera hook.

There a number of planes which share the same Body.msh. Those planes having a gun sight should probably not have the gunsight view hook relocated to the observer position. In those cases I could make a copy of Body.msh, renamed and specified in the relevant .him files, to be used for those sight-equipped birds, which would retain the normal gunsight view hook position.

Does this seem OK?

By the way , I agree with you that I see no need for the observer to be able to see through the gunsight -
though I think it would be desirable for the gunsight to be visible within the cockpit from both pilot and
observer positions , both.

I just want to make sure that the Observer hook (?) is reached through a separate gunner position ,
so that for instance in multiplay situations , two players could occupy the Mossie , one as pilot and
one as observer/bombardier.
( Even if the bombardier features are not (yet) set up as functional)

To create a unique observer position would require to make its own 'cockpit', as is done for the Ju-88 Torp. Here it could be largely a copy of the pilot's cockpit; Indeed, I should think the same cockput folder could be used, with the observer's .him placed in there. Of course a new cockpit class would require to be made, and the observer position added to the cockpit class.

I note that the Ju-88 Observer pisition has a binocular view activated by the 'gunsight view' key. But It's locked in the forward direction, angled down by 3 degrees. And the FOV is too tight at 5 degrees; I've widened it to 10, which now shows the old classic 'binocular figure 8" framing. 😉  I can't yet figure out what must be done to permit panning the view...

In the JU-88 observer cockpit class what you can do when using CAMERAAIM is defined by this section of the code

Code: [Select]
private void prepareToEnter()
    {
        HookPilot hookpilot = HookPilot.current;
        if(hookpilot.isPadlock())
            hookpilot.stopPadlock();
        hookpilot.doAim(true);
        hookpilot.setSimpleAimOrient(0.0F, -3F, 0.0F);
        enteringAim = true;
    }

    private void enter()
    {
        HookPilot hookpilot = HookPilot.current;
        hookpilot.setSimpleUse(true);
        doSetSimpleUse(true);
        HotKeyEnv.enable("PanView", false);
        HotKeyEnv.enable("SnapView", false);
    }

    public void doSetSimpleUse(boolean flag)
    {
        super.doSetSimpleUse(flag);
        if(flag)
        {
            saveFov = Main3D.FOVX;
            CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 5.0");
            Main3D.cur3D().aircraftHotKeys.setEnableChangeFov(false);
            mesh.chunkVisible("Binoculars", true);
            bEntered = true;
        }
    }

you could maybe try to enable PANVIEW and SNAPVIEW that is always declared false when using CAMERAIM and toggled with the F9 Key
HotKeyEnv.enable("PanView", false);
HotKeyEnv.enable("SnapView", false);
