Could someone try a simple test for me?
« on: March 26, 2025, 10:52:01 PM »

To anyone not using my effects mod...

I'm battling a persistent problem, where smoke and/or fire remains to be emitted from wing-mounted engines that have been shot/blown off with the wing. Once a wing has been torn from the plane, any engine mounted on it should take the damage effects associated with it.

So, would you be kind enough to do a test? Shoot down a twin-engined plane and check to see if engine smoke and/or fire is still being emitted from the missing engine after the entire wing has been knocked off.

A good plane to use is the Do-17Z-2 or the Bf-110 (earlier, up to the G-2). Shoot at it with at least a couple of 20mm cannon; I use the Ki-84-Ib, firing all 4 cannon. The idea is to get at least one engine smoking/on fire, then saw off the wing at the root.

It's been so long that I've had my game so heavily modded that it's really hard to revert parts code back to stock. I have already done some of that in areas I feel are the more likely culprits, but the problem remains. And if I don't really need to install another B.A.T. copy I'd prefer to not to. I can't trust my memory on the matter of effects being emitted from missing engines for the stock game. If I can confirm that this doesn't normally happen, at least I'll know that I'm at fault.   :-|

Note that other effects mods should not be any different to stock in this regard, for the class coding is not so extensive. The only potential exception I'm aware of has to do with the effects done for the Engine Mod, v2.7 anyway. Here some additional code has been added (and upon which I have extensively built) which adds a short-duration fuel leak fire effect.

Thanks!

Thanks for jumping on this so quickly, Mick!

Be aware that some fraction of the pieces of wreckage are randomly assigned a fire and/or smoke effect. It might not be obvious that the engine pieces could have been treated this way. A number of the pieces have a smaller effect which lasts a fairly short time, typically between 2 and 5 or 7 seconds. One or two other pieces could have a heavier fire/smoke which lasts all the way to the ground, and continuing on for another 80 seconds until the game removes the wreckage.

To be certain that things are working correctly, it's good to ascertain that indeed the engine or its associated oil damage effect was active before the wing got chopped off. If this was the case, then it's pretty definitive that I've introduced something which is not allowing one or more effects to be properly terminated. At least that's my current supposition.

... this was the case, the engine was running before the wing got cut off the fuselage ...  ;)

Thanks for the confirmation, Mick.

I've spent many hours systematically rolling back many mod elements and testing, but the problem remains. I really should have noted when I first saw this, along with the most recent changes to that point. I must have been focused on other more pressing problems and let it slip by. Fool, I am!

A useful and helpful check would be to see if this was present in my v1.6 effects mod pack. It would be quicker if someone using it could do a test, than it would be for me to make all the required changes. (My v2.0 pack is extensive!)

... sorry, but this time I won't be able to help, as I don't use the v1.6 effects mod pack (4.09 game version here ...) ...  :-[

And here I am, feeling like a Luddite for not evolving past B.A.T. 4.0!  ;D

I didn't expect help from your quarter on the B.A.T. front, obviously, but again, thanks a bunch for your swift input from the 4.09 side, which definitely reveals the need for my continued pursuit...

... I am still flying a 4.09 game version, simply because I can't even imagine flying without Tiger_33's UV3 sound mod (my dad was a mechanic, so engine sounds are really important to me ...)

This issue has been a fly in the ointment for at least a year. It's so ugly to me that I'm loathe to foist it upon anyone. If I can wrestle it under control I'd finally be happy enough to present my bouncing new baby to the world.  ;D
