Thoughts on Beacon Activation for RN Aircraft in UP Cassie
« on: March 29, 2025, 02:07:36 PM »

Hi All,

Just getting familiar with UP Cassie. Like all versions and modPacks it has its own characteristics ,
strengths and foibles. I was making a simple mission the other day ( just a small one ) as I am trying
to get familiar with the particulars of FMB in Cassie.
I set up a Carrier launch on the Anzio map , and to my surprise , the Seafire Ib I plotted was not YE/YG capable.
When I hit my Tab key to bring up the Beacon Ident for my Carrier I got nada.
So I proceeded to test all the Carrier Capable RN aircraft in the FMB list.
The following is a list of which RN Aircraft are YG/YE Beacon sensitive in UP Cassie ( ok = YG functionality , X=not so ),
and which are not   :

Now , RN aircraft were beacon sensitive after ~1934 , but sadly IL2 does not model the RN specific Beacon characteristics.
This is one of the reason why even fighter designs for RN use required two seats , including one for the
The System was known as Type 72 with 3 different developments over time ( Type 72X[1936] , Type 72DP , and Type 72DM ).
The RN had adopted the "Hayrake" system through the "Tizzard Mission" in 1940.

Since IL2 does not have a facsimile for Type72 , I would propose that all RN aircraft have the YE/YG sensitivity added to their
fm files ( I understand that YE/YG capability is a single line entry in the fm data - is this correct ? ) until such time as the RN
Type 72 is modelled.
You can argue my proposal is not historical , but navy aviators knew in 1934 that without electronic assistance , it was no mean
feat to find your way back to your carrier in soupy weather , and/or after the carrier had made course changes after the mission launch.
One could also suggest that YE/YG beacon capability be added for ALL Allied Western aircraft which were operational post 1940 ,
as the proliferation of YG (land based) beacons would escalate as time went on ( post 1940 , anyway ).

In my mind the perfect solution would be that Beacon (Type) Sensitivity should be a Property selection for each aircraft object in the
FMB anyway - though I realize this would be a much more work intensive project.

Anyhow , those are my thoughts. Do with them what you will.

Here are links to info on Type72 Beacons.
Someone more technically adept than I might be able to determine how to translate
this info into chunks that might be incorporated into IL2 1946.

Good thoughts.

While trying to check the list of Kopfdorfer, I ran into another unexpected problem.
I have no beacons at all in the mission with the carriers.
What I mean: I fly the proper aircraft, let's say, Swordfish, and when I press the button assigned as "next beacon", I get the on-screen message "beacon none". My aircraft carrier is happily sailing a couple of miles from my aircraft.
YE/YG navigation did work for me in other game versions. I don't remember testing it in UP earlier.
What am I doing wrong?

I think you need a US carrier for the system to work

It should be US N or RN , however as I recall not all carriers were correctly coded at their
initial inclusion in the game.
At least such is my understanding.
Regarding Dimlees problem there are some settings that are required to be
enabled for advanced nav to work.
It's been a while , let me review and get back to Dimlee.
