Thanks mate, good to see this one dug up. It doesn't give a true 'HDR' effect, only a 'bloom'. High dynamic range refers to dynamic changes in light exposure levels, which is a 'simulation' of the eyes accomodative ability whilst the 'bloom' effect just adds some nice pretty over-exposure.

I really hope we stumble upon someone with OpenGL talent and get this implemented that way. They tried back at AAA in the day but had no luck  ::)

Yeah , I was even considering to convince those guys who work with OpenGL games on one of
the OpenGL forums and know OpenGL code the best for rewriting game engine
code but their opinion was mostly that they would rather literally kill themselves than
rewriting old OpenGL 1.2 code game with new OpenGL version code .
In one word , it's just too much work and unnecessary frustration , to them it's better to do
new game from scratch than editing older versions .  :(
Imagine having real life cockpit shadows in IL-2 1946 , BANG !! who need BoB:SoW ?  :D
It's truly amazing that in the past few years , there was never any OpenGL code enthusiast
who would take such a task for love of playing this simulator .
We haven't been lucky thus far , more likely we might have find someone to do it in DirectX.
I tried to death DX version with at least 1.4 shader and DirectX 9.0 which shader is necessary
for perfect water but the game engine won't budge , for those who knows DirectX would be
a question of editing few necessary entries for the dx8Wrap.dll so it can read correctly and
load DirectX 9.0 versions  8)
I tried convertor from d3d8.dll to d3d9.dll and the game will load with loading mod note but
with black screen  ::) Holy shit ! :-X

i tried this out again, having not used it for awhile, and the strangest thing is happening - it worked fine the first couple times, now the game loads to the menu, but as usual, i have to Alt-Tab/minimise it to be able to navigate the menu with the mouse.
with this enabled, however, the game then just crashes at this point.... ???
start her up again in OpenGL mode, and all is well....DX = crash ???
strange....oh well, PowerStrip it is for me... ;D

This mod made directx start working for me again (earlier it wasn't rendering properly)!!

Here are some alternate bloom settings for the *.ini file. They tone down the effect, which gives a more understated and realistic appearance - as well as making it useable on winter maps or near runways (which were far too bright).

There are a few more adjustments which lead to an overall darkening, increased bloom near dawn and also adds a realistic reduction in contrast at night (leading to more realistic night vision, where the human eye doesn't resolve as clearly).

Any suggestions are welcome, I made all of the changes in one go and I'm sure I'd enjoy using an improved version.

i find that using a little app i heard about from, i think, Avala, called powerStrip, can give a very similar, if not nicer, effect when adjusting the settings correctly. it may not have as intense an HDR effect as this bloom mod, but the added bonus of being able to use it with perfect settings, has made it a keeper in my book.  8)
i still use this bloom mod on ocassion when i fire up an older game for kicks.... ;D 8)

+1 ;)

Okey dokey , I'll try again  :D

This topic and mod is dedicated to those who can't run in OpenGL for whatever reason
and are stuck with DirectX , then this might be of some help to make the game a bit prettier .
Lets face it , default IL-2 1946 DirectX graphics sucks big time !
Some of the guys might as well be happy for a little graphics enhancement  8)
Effect is not created by applying new colors to the whole monitor screen by PowerStrip
or Gapa utility but rather through game engine DirectX rendering .

When there will be new post topic with mod download for OpenGL render selected as
the main graphics renderer , then there will be separated topic with included video .
This video below was made back in February 09 , 2010 and since then this mod with custom
settings was lost accidentally during one of the game version updates to the newer
version and up to this day mod entries values were not recreated and is not ready .

@ Avimimus ,
thank you for posting additional different values setting for DirectX Bloom mod ,
will try it tomorrow and will report back  8)

A shame we can't get this for Open-GL.

What are the reasons you can't have Direct-X Perfect settings?

Makes sense...it's a shame we can't have it up to DX=9. I suppose that wouldn't be possible, would it?

philip.ed ,
It was already done in DirectX 9.0 for other older games but it won't work in IL-2 1946 thus far .
All necessary DirectX 9.0 .dll files are already done but there is need for additional .dll files code
editing to make IL-2 1946 to recognize new DirectX 9.0 version which can be done only by
Boris Vorontsov or someone else who knows DirectX .dll files coding .
There is very likely little left to be done and BANG ! IL-2 1946 is running in DirectX 9.0 with
more modern graphics effects with shaders included for the game perfect setting and water.  8)
Unfortunately , I don't see anyone touching this anytime soon and I strongly believe that
Boris will not be working with these older files ever again .
His official support ended a long time ago for these files and there is nobody else to add necessary
code lines for already done convertor from d3d8.dll to d3d9.dll which is already working with
many other older DirectX 8.0 games.  :-X
