Hi satan  :)
this mod was originally made for other games like ViceCity, NoOneLivesForever2 , SilentHill2 ,
SeriousSam and for some more DirectX 8.0 games including LockOnthat's , that's why you
see these keys included inside DirectX80.ini file which are working with other games but useless for IL-2 1946 .
All you have to do if you want and it works with IL-2 1946 is to experimenting with :
[BLOOM] & [COLORCORRECTION] section inside DirectX80.ini file section or just leave it as
it is right now.

I'll be latter today trying Avimimus's setting :

[BLOOM]
BloomPowerDay=6
BloomFadeTime=10000
BloomConstantDay=7
BloomQuality=0
BloomScreenLevelDay=20
BloomCurveDay=10
BloomPowerNight=10
BloomConstantNight=2
BloomCurveNight=6
BloomScreenLevelNight=15
BloomAdaptationScreenLevel=40
BloomAdaptationMultiplier=50
BloomAllowOversaturation=0

That second video I posted is for possible OpenGL mod and not DirextX  :)
It's completely different thing to get such colors and shadows in OpenGL .

@ Avinimus ,
thank you for posting additional different values setting for DirectX Bloom mod ,
will try it tomorrow and will report back  8)

You're welcome.

I'm looking for ideas on how to improve them. I've tried adjusting the colour correction section in order to compensate for the darkening. I'm still not satisfied though. This mod is very useful in that it changes a whole bunch of areas (including separate settings for night - settings which allow darker nights...)

My own goals are:
- Very high within texture contrast (to get that Mig Alley or Jane's WWII fighters sense of altitude)
- Relatively lower colour saturation (I'm a Canadian)
- Neither too bright nor too dark (avoiding excessive bloom - and of course Goldilocks).
- Also looks good in winter maps (not excessively blinding snow)

I've noticed that I'm having some problems with winter river textures btw. I'm assuming this is because of DirectX mode.

Hi Avimimus  :)
I just tried your setting and it is completely something else which for me ground looks darker
during 12:00 clear weather and I can't see and recognize bloom effect anymore  :)
That's why this version was created with more bloom to make sure everybody will clearly see
the difference between stock DirectX and modded bloom DirectX .
When it was first discussed and tested about two years ago , some of the guys couldn't
tell the difference from original IL-2 1946 graphics and using DirectX bloom mod because
of the settings which mainly were tuned differently and applying to other games while
barely visible in IL-2 1946.
So values with this released version were reconfigured to give clear and visible bloom also
when looking at sky from inside cockpit which was not the case with DirectX bloom original
version by Boris when used for IL-2/1946 without changing values .
This is gonna be that kind of mod which everybody likes some different graphics and each
and everyone can play with those setting and creating his/her own graphics to be the best
looking  :)
Thank you for posting your setting , I am sure it will be used by many guys , I just love a
lot of bloom around in IL-2 1946 when sometimes playing in DirectX set up 8)
There is a lot of possibilities , I haven't tuned night time and snow is sure quite blinding bright  :-X
I will get back to more DirectX Bloom tuning someday soon since having to do right now
other things and it would be nice if you keep up with experimenting to get results you like
and prefer for your graphics set up .
If you make another progress , please , post the new updated values here again , me and
many others would love to try it  8)
Your own goals with DirectX Bloom settings sounds great , keep it up !

Yes, I'll look forward to your improved settings.

I can definitely see the value in making the default settings excessive. Bloom is still there with my settings (it makes the sun blinding over a three or four times larger portion of the sky), but it isn't too noticeable.

I'll keep working on mine and see if I can actually realise those goals.

Excellent , I'll be looking for your new settings  :)
Yes , released version setting is overkill when looking in to the sun as the result of very visible bloom
and it would be really nice if you keep experimenting in finding the best general visual values
balance for various day and night time setting , something like one setting fits all time periods .  :)
Without trying and more experimenting , we will never know what else it's still possible to
pull out of the DirectX Bloom mod .
Thanks again Avimimus  8)

Your welcome,

It is a real pain to be systematic (change a value, load the same mission, exit, repeat) but it's paying off...

New values:
Quote
[BLOOM]
BloomPowerDay=5
BloomFadeTime=1000000
BloomConstantDay=1
BloomQuality=0
BloomScreenLevelDay=20
BloomCurveDay=10
BloomPowerNight=10
BloomConstantNight=2
BloomCurveNight=6
BloomScreenLevelNight=15
BloomAdaptationScreenLevel=0
BloomAdaptationMultiplier=30
BloomAllowOversaturation=0

... further down in the file ...

Quote
[COLORCORRECTION]
DarkeningAmountDay=24
ScreenLevelDay=20
ScreenLevelNight=15
DarkeningAmountNight=29
GammaCurveDay=10
GammaCurveNight=10
ColorSaturationDay=2
ColorSaturationNight=4
UsePaletteTexture=1

Features of this version:
- Sufficient bloom to have an effect on tactics (and be noticed), increased plane-shine
- Somewhat compensated for excessive daytime darkening (however there are limits to monitor brightness), winter conditions are still flyable (if slightly washed out) - major compromise here.
- Higher contrast textures rendering retained across a broader range of lighting
- Lower contrast and darker nights

Note: I'm flying with an older CRT monitor and an ATI card. Il-2 looks quite a bit different depending on whether one is using an ATI or Nvidia card and every monitor is different. Some people also prefer more saturated colours (depending on where you live and how your brain is wired). I once met a guy who sneezed whenever he went out from the dark into a brightly lit area - so I did some academic research and found out that it is a common condition.

In other words, results may very much vary. S!

I'd also recommend the following value:
Quote
ShadowAmountDay=20

This should fix the excessively dark and angular daytime shadows on winter maps.

Cool !  8) thanks Avimimus , will try it tomorrow  :)

EDIT: Just tried , winter is now absolutely decent for flying ,
I tried also late afternoon hours with sunshine and it was giving
pretty nice shine on the side of the aircraft facing sun and
nice darker tone on the other side  :)
The whole setting is still looking a bit darker comparing to the
original game colors for the specific time period and I still can't see
and recognize a bit of bloom brightness tone in the skies but you
prefer your kind of settings and that's what matter the most  8)
Will be awaiting any of your progress with new setting for testing
in case you haven't settled on final graphics and will contiue experiments .

Thanks again  :)
