New Map - Aragon Front - a few more days
« on: September 23, 2010, 08:49:35 AM »

Companeros, brigadistas y milicianos!

A new map for the Spanish Civil War is almost ready for posting. It should be downloadable in no more than 7 days from now. Word of honor. It just needs some checking out and the possible addition of small farms and buildings here and there. Otherwise all is good.

This is a map that I have been wanting to make for a long time. It's of a region I have been visiting for 25 years and in which even now, there are numerous remnants and sites having to do with the SCW. I've tried to get as much into the map as possible, and it is full of trench systems, fortified positions, bunkers, castles, monasteries, villages, hamlets, farms, cities, grain silos and agrarian cooperatives, an aqueduct, canals and pumping stations and more pig farms than you can shake a stick at.

The map also makes very extensive use of the new South European objects by Efflakke/Lejo and this gives it a new look as far as objects go.

Luckily, the pig farms are really closed buildings. very much like the sheds in Canon's UK Objects which really double well for these farms ... you'll never see a pig in the open unless it's been turned in jamon serrano ... ha ha.

Got around to making some screenshots.

These are some general landscape views and also a few of the trenches to the east of Huesca, the Republican lines called the Estrecho Quinto. Also some views of the aqueduct of Tardienta and closeups of trenches.

I love the small groupings of buildings in the landscape.

Thank you. I am learning a lot!

I love the small groupings of buildings in the landscape.

I learned this from kapteeni a while ago. No need for very elaborate templates of small hamlets. A house or two, preferably small and low, and then a bunch of trees placed randomly is very good to use in many types of rural landscapes. They are easy to make, it doesn't even take 1 minute to put this together. Then you copy/paste wherever you want them to go. And you do this as many times as you wish with x number of small templates. If you change houses, add some fences or an orchard of trees or some pig sheds then you can add some nice variation to an otherwise empty landscape.

And luckily in this instance, the area itself, the Monegros region around Huesca and Barbastro in northern Spain, is populated by a multitude of small farms, houses, sheds for livestock or agricultural tools as well as fruit farms and orchards ... and some very small sized rural villages as well ...

When the map is posted in a few days time, I'll attach a folder of photos from the region, to show some of the landscape as well as some of the numerous historical sites that contain trenches and other remnants of the fighting in the area.

if possible populated versions of all your previous Spanish Maps that are still on WIP...

The new objects by Ufflake/Lejo really made a difference in populating this map. I'd venture about 50% of the towns and villages consist of these new objects ... it made configuring village templates infinitely more fun and easy.
