Hi All,
Here is the beta version of my first map, Western Carolines. In case you don't know where this area is, it is between Guam and the Palaus:

Malone, please move it to 4.10. The objects i used for the map were from 4.09 and from Boomer's object mod pack for 4.10, so I assume this map is only compatible with 4.10. I did not test it in 4.09.
Also, if anyone wants some historical photos from the area, here they are:

Dave...Dave...what are you doing Dave?
Is that Ulithi Dave??
Is Yap town burning Dave?
Nice looking map, Dave.

Interesting map choice, since it was the major forward U.S. naval base during the last year of the Pacific war. Good for "what if" scenarios, as well as historical nightfighter and CAP flights to by the USN to protect the anchorage against recce and harassment bombers.
Sadly for campaign builders, the Japanese evacuated Ulithi before the Americans invaded and the only major Japanese attack against Ulithi was Operation Tan No. 2. It was a colossal failure:
http://www.combinedfleet.com/Tan%20No.%202.htm
An interesting hypothetical mission would be if Operation Tan had succeeded. Substitute G4M Betties for the P1Y Frances, put some F6F-N nightfighters in the air and you've got a hectic night fighter/night bomber mission!

Yes, I realized that before I made the map. Since it was my first time, I wanted to keep the area and islands fairly small. USAF did bomb Yap and Woleai quite a bit, but the B-24s that did it were based very far away outside my map area. The USN carrier task forces did also hit Yap and Woleai too during the summer of 1944. This map had special meaning to me too because my grandpa's ship USS Rall DE-304 was credited with sinking a midget sub in the lagoon immediately after USS Mississinewa AO-59 was hit on Nov. 20 1944. My grandpa was the Exec at the time of the sinking.

UPDATE: I realized I uploaded a version of the maps with some objects I forgot to delete. NEW version is v0.2. The links have been updated.

Very nice map indeed and quite a pleasant suprise. Thank you very much. One interesting thing: I can save missions on the "late 44" map but not the "mid 44". Go figure. Anyone else have this problem?
-
Seems to work fine in both 4.09 & 4.10.

What version of the game are you running? I have only tested both maps on 4.10. I had the 4.10 object pack from Boomer installed when I made the map.
4.10 Object pack:

4.09, 2.3b
4.10, 2.5b

4.09, 2.3b
4.10, 2.5b
Not too sure what the problem is, but I started to create this map in 4.09m + UP 2.01 then continued with 4.10 + SAS 2.5b. Everything seems to work on my computer.

Try use the universal static.ini checker to search for missing object or look at your LOG file searching for errors and report them....

Thanks very much for this what a great little first map!! it really does have a nice tropical feel to it...you must keep map building you've got the talent ;D Don't worry to much about the small issues they can be worked through, i've just released my first map as well and had many problems to its all part of the learning curve.
Keep up the good work ;)
-
Absolutely great job, Dave. Thanx! :P :D

Is there an update to the download link?

Is there an update to the download link?
Sorry about the DL link. I took the files out of my dropbox to make room for other ones. I will put them back up when I get home from work later today. This map is already included in UP 3.0, but that version has a slight error in the texture map but a fixed version will be in my update on here.
-
Links are back up, sorry for the delay.
-
Dave,
your map is very nicely done! Thank you very much for it.
I run a UP 2.01 / Modded 4.09 install. And your map is for 4.10...
I was having some doubts if it would work for me or not, and it is working... A very welcome surprise.
Please keep up the good work.
I would think that if you have the object packs installed it would work in v4.09, but I put v4.10 on there just to be safe.

Links are back up, sorry for the delay.
Thanks! DLing now! ;)

Hello, I wanted to ask the creator of this superb map if it is posiible to use this Western Carolines map v0.6 under v4.09m with UP2.01, because if it was possible I could tune some of the files by myself, so the map could work in 4.09m.
So I want ask if there's any way how to make it work under 4.09m + UP2.01, i also have Boomers UP Objects Pack.
Im not "a fully fledged" modder, but i know how to correct, change or tune some broken things in buggy mod or to modify some things in a mod.
But i have some projects- I will to 'start' (creating fully) with them in very close future, and planning to create 2 or three planes. But because lack of time, they are in so pre-born state that any presentation is meaningless.
But back to the point, if there is someone who can tell me how to tune this map, i would be very happy.
Im asking hubly someone of the creators of this map to send me PM or post it here, what and where i should modify to make it work under my installation (4.09m+UP2.01).
I have my reasons to use the v4.09m + UP2.01 even in this time.
Maybe im hung too tight to the v4.09m -someone could think, but in fact the 4.09m is stabler and most of mods are working better under it, because the UP3 is still beta (or RC) and standard game v4.101 is not so friendly to the mods.
But that just my opinion, if the UP3 willl be right, i will switch to it..but to that time i will be with fully modded and tuned 4.09m+UP2.01+ custom SAS'46 mods+ my custom tuned/added things xD

Excellent map with a lot of details :o
Thanks a lot for your work Dave!

Install it under v4.09/UP2.01 and try it. If it works then fine.
If not then it is likely to be because of missing objects and/or missing textures.
Get the Universal Static.ini Checker https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,10282.0.html
If you use this to run a check on the map it will tell you what objects are missing.
If you install Boomers Object Pack this should cover everything.
If it still doesnt work look in the logfile. This is likely to tell you why the map failed to load.

I have it on my 409....

Ashe is exactly correct. I would try that, but like many people on here have said, they have it working in v4.09m. Probably just need Boomers Object Pack. I only tested the map in v4.10m, so that's what I labeled it under.
-
Thanks for the great work Dave :D ;) :)
The more Pacific maps the merrier ;D ;)
Looking forward to flying around in it this week end
Cheers Kirby
-
Thx guys, tested and works withouts disturbances.
-
I have updated this map to have the same standard textures as my new Marianas Expanded map. The version number has been updated to v1.0.
-
Dave, I love your work, man.
But, this last update was a no go for me. :'(
All.ini entries don't match the map folder, which is labeled "Western_Carolines Ver 1.0" ???
I've reloaded the old folders and all.ini entries. Thank you :)
-
I don't have any early versions of your map, I put this one in UP3/RC4 and it will not load, just a nice blue screen on FMB. Never had a problem with maps before, but this is a new can of worms for me. Looks nice in the screen shots.
-
;)Hello,
I got the same issue (blue screen in FMB + Java error on load.ini) but I found the fix :
1) Some textures are missing in the Tooth_pacific_textures folder. You can copy/paste them from
the Tooth_textures folder that should come from the Marianna_expanded Map.
Textures to copy/paste
ForestSide.tga
JForestMask.tga
2) There are 2 typos in the load.ini, .tga is typed twice in the following lines
Wood0 = Tooth_Pacific_Textures/midland3_fields_jungle.tga.tga
Wood1 =
Wood2 = Tooth_Pacific_Textures/midland3_fields_jungle.tga.tga
Wood3 =
To fix it keep only a single .tga in the texture filename
I hope this will work for you as it did for me
Happy flying

-
I'm sorry guys, the new version worked when I tested it on my computer. I will take another look today and update the download.
-
No! no other texture is needed, woodmask is only the second typo error after the double .tga in wood section (see ansons post)
but after correction of double .tga also the whole WoodMask section must be rewritten as:
WoodMask2 = forest/summer/JForestMask.tga
WoodMask3 = forest/summer/ForestMask2.tga
WoodMiniMasks = forest/summer/MiniMask.tga
SideWood = forest/summer/ForestSide.tga
and your map folder must be named Western_Carolines and not Western_Carolines v1.0
nice map, Dave, good textures and an impressive documentation. Really a fine job :)
-
OK, the issues mentioned above have been resolved (i think). The download has been updated so everyone feel free to upgrade now. Please report any further issues.
-
I cannot load the map because I am missing: Tooth_Pacific_Textures/ForestSide.tga
-
New upload works fine now on my computer, UP3 load.
-
I cannot load the map because I am missing: Tooth_Pacific_Textures/ForestSide.tga
that texture should be located in forest/summer/ForestSide.tga, not Tooth_Pacific_Textures. I am running it on UP 3.0 RC4 with no problems. I'm not sure if that texture is a part of UP 3 or not.
-
U DA MAN, Dave!
Not only did you fix the new version, I now realize that the new folder layout lets me have both the old and new versions available with no alterations.
Great work!

What a great map, just saw I haven't flown it in a long while.
Forced my current testing install of Histo to have this, hope I can add it to the Histo map package, maybe a minor change, but hell, that base now fits jets as well! :)

Tom, if you want to add the map to the Histo map package, please be sure to use the newer version (v1.0) with improved textures. See the first post for the download link.

This map is a beauty; it's maps like these that make flying in the Pacific such a joy for me.
Many thanks!!! :D :D :D

Already downloaded that version. ;) It depends on my boss at Histo which maps come in, main issue atm is we test for stability so I assume adding maps again comes later.
Great map!
The tex I downloaded with the latest version are dated 13.02. this year.

I downloaded this map this last weekend, but it wasn't until I was flying over it that it's beauty was really noticed. It is an awesome map. Brilliant. Thank you.
