Title: United States Navy Destroyers [4.09] [4.10] [4.12]

      United States Navy Destroyers

I've been working on these for a little while now and am happy to finally release them. Asheshouse was instrumental in getting these to you by making the class that give these their own slots. Thank you Asheshouse.

There are 15 Fletcher Class destroyers in this mod; 11 in Measure 3 of various Designs along with 2 each in Measure 21 and 22 - one old and beaten up and the other just about out of the dry dock.

My research shows that destroyers outnumbered all other war ships in just about every navy. They were the skirmishers and the foot soldiers of the navy. They were used and abused and saw hard combat. The ships in this mod show this wear-and-tear in the weathering I've applied. And yes, it IS a bit heavily applied but, like actors on a stage, the makeup must be applied slightly heavier to be seen from a distance - we seldom land and spend time on the deck of a destroyer!

During 1944 the US Navy experimented with dazzle camouflage in an attempt to fool submarines using periscopes. The shapes on the sides were supposed to confuse the enemy into thinking he was looking at multiple targets or that the target he was seeing was on a course other than that which it was. This experiment only lasted one year. Not all ships got this camouflage; some wore Measure 21 or 22 from 1943 right through 1945.

Even though the paint schemes were only used for one year the photos I've seen show that destroyers appear to have far more dings, nicks, scratches, gouges and just general hard living than the larger capital ships ever had. I don't think an admiral ever made a lowly destroyer his flag ship.

There are limitations in the game in that the ship is mirrored on both sides. Like the USN Light Carriers I released before I used the port side plans for the Designs on Measure 3 ships. This way, for half the time at least, any ship is accurately portrayed!

The only exception is USS Conway DD-507 for which I could find only the starboard side plans for Design 7D; even it is accurate from that side as well.

The Measure 21 and 22 ships given here, while generic in nature, were given numbers by me of destroyers that, for whatever reason, had their contract revoked and thus were not built. Through the magic of computer generation these ships live.

Here are screenshots of these USN Fletcher Class destroyers:

These make great additions to the mainstay class of U.S. Tin Cans. Very useful, and much appreciated.

If at all possible, I would like to request a DD, or at least instructions on how to change the numbers on the hull. My grandfather served aboard a Fletcher class DD, the DD-652 Ingersoll, during WWII in the Pacific. His ship was involved in almost every major campaign from the Marshall Islands to the Surrender signing in Tokyo Bay. This would be a great way to honor his ship and the men who served aboard her.

Sakai07:

OK, this could get a bit hairy but what the h***!

My research showed only 1943 and 1945 for the USS Ingersoll and the Measures she wore were MS-21 and MS-22 respectively. I can't find any info for 1944 unless you can get some.

Here's the link for NameBoard652.tga for USS Ingersoll DD-652:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/3v3qzeuv2ynzjbq/NameBoard652.tga (https://www.mediafire.com/file/3v3qzeuv2ynzjbq/NameBoard652.tga)

DL this, then use the instructions at the bottom of the readme for changing the NameBoards on the Generic DDs to place this on a destroyer.

Hope you like this Sakai07.

For anyone else:

I'll gladly do this for you but I might need some help from you - and your patience. It only takes a minute to make a new number but more than that to upload it. Perhaps I'll start making NameBoards for the rest of the Fletcher Class destroyers and upload the lot to MediaFire. If I get enough feedback in favour of this I'll go ahead; but not until then.

The site I use to get the information I've been using is:

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/warship_camouflage.htm (http://www.shipcamouflage.com/warship_camouflage.htm)

It has been comprehensive enough for what I need but there are gaps in plans for Measures and Designs that I can't seem able to find anywhere else. Someone got me the info needed so I could deck out USS Essex CV-9 in her Measure 3 Design 6-10d - the site above doesn't have the Design drawing. This is the kind of help I may need from if you want a specific ship.

I'm seriously thinking of going back and making some destroyers up in Measure 12 for the early Fletcher Class in 1942 - USS Fletcher DD-445 through USS Saufley DD-465.

I could also use the Wickes Class DD that we have from ShipPack to make other destroyers in various Measures and Designs.

That's for another day...

Bob

just can't get them to work in HSFX 7.0.1, I got the Long Hull Carrier, CVL pack, and Cruiser pack to work.  The game loads and I can place the ship on the map and plot a waypoint course, but when I hit play it doesn't get past 60% loading...............  guess I can live without them........ :'(
