Man, this is fantastic, a fantastic cockpit, the 3D seems perfect, the combination of upper and downwards firing guns unique and awesome, the performance and the flying behaviour (if the FM is accurate) very pleasing, especially if you consider the size of this plane and its weak sakae engines...but damn it, I hate when I do this, there is a problem that would prevent people from using them into campaings!

The AI behaviour! The planes attack like they have forward firing guns, they make perfect passes, they shoot elsewhere, never damaging the enemy and that's it...a pity really!!

You must contact the SAS team and especially SAS~CirX so he work at a new version of the AI to include "schraege music" behaviour!!

Another option is to offer us a J1N1-Sa with a forward firing 20mm gun instead of a radar antenna, but this won't really solve the problem, just make it acceptable in a possible campaign.

well, that post is by Cirx, yes, but even there he says that he is posting the mod originally done by certificate. ;)
that is also a much older AI mod than the one that comes with DBW, which was done mainly by Anto, and some others.

Who ever it may be I hope that he can re-work AI so the work of many people like ten010 (it's the D4Y-S too!) , CirX , Ranwers, Checkyersix, benitomuso (and who else I cannot remeber) that worked in various nightfighter projects with s-music guns can finally be fully enjoyed in missions/campaigns.

I can't find realy good info about what to expect about the radar of this Japanese plane.

Was it
Type 3 Mark 6 Model 4 (Type H6)

Can't believe they could track a plane 70 km away...much more then German radar.

Was it FD-2? But this is confusing. All info from wiki.

Further I believe japanese had some early warning system, but no way of leading aircraft into battle such as the Germans had. How to make a realistic japanese nightfighter with the awsome C&C mod...?

J1N1-C:

Found some info:

"With assistance from the NTRI and Yoji Ito, the ONATD also developed Japan's only airborne microwave radar. Designated FD-2 (sometimes FD-3), this was a magnetron-based, 25-cm (1.2-GHz), 2-kW set weighing about 70 kg. It could detect aircraft at a range between 0.6 and 3 km, satisfactory for close-range night-fighter aircraft such as the Nakajima J1N1-S Gekko. It used four Yagi antennas mounted in the nose area; separate elements for transmit and receive were skewed for searching. Unlike in the air warfare in Europe, there were few night-fighter aircraft used by Japan; consequently, it was mid-1944 before the Type FD-2 was put into use. Some 100 sets were manufactured."

Found some interesting info on how the night fighter version of the J1N1 first came to be:

"By 1943, Japanese forces in the Pacific War were on the defensive. The major south Pacific bastion of Rabaul was under attack night and day by allied bombers. At that time, the Japanese had no regularly-constituted night fighter force. CDR Yasua Kozono of the 251st Naval Air Group developed a cannon-armed night fighter from two derelict J1N1s and brought them to Rabaul. Significantly, and without any consultation with the Luftwaffe, Kozono had the aircraft fitted with weapons that fired at an oblique angle.

The first success against a nocturnal B-17 over Rabaul came on May 21, 1943, proving Kozono's concept. During the remainder of the year, the two aircraft managed to knock down approximately 30 B-17 or B-24 night raiders over Rabaul, and the J1N1 became known to the Japanese as the "Gekko" or "Moonlight." The Allied code name was "Irving".

By September 1944, 486 Gekkos had been produced, as both the Type 11 early version and the Type 11 late version; these were visually distinguishable by the stepped rear upper fuselage of the earlier aircraft. In the Home Islands, the 302nd Naval Air Group, based at Atsugi, became the leading B-29 killers with the "Gekko" as the raids increased after November 1944."

Noting the kill markings, the full arrow would correspond to a full confirmed kill, and the headless arrows to damage/probables to an/that aircraft; condsidering the IJNAF/IJAAF policy of not officially encoraging kill markings - some flight commanders considered it detrimental to the moral of the rest of 'their' pilots, and it was akin to adverising to the enemy of a 'dangerous' opponant. Officially kills relating to a weapon usage were allowed - so airframes were sometimes credited irrespective of who flew them; this latter aspect did gain some ground late war, to try and bolster moral and 'spirit' as the end of the Pacific war came closer to being.

thanks for the update, ten :D
i wanted to ask, as i don't think it's been mentioned, has there been any fixes done for this since the first release, in particular an issue with the damage model, i think - if the tail/rudder section gets shot off, the tail markings are still visible.
i can't post a screenshot right now, but i can if necessary... ;)

There is a campaign available for the night fighter version of the Gekko now:   :)

And as it uses the C&C MOD of CY6 you will try some real night fighting as well, with your Radar Operator guiding you to the intercept!

Thanks for a super effort, ten101!  ;D

J1N1 F_Irving WIP Field Mod ver1.33......

What you will get is a  J1N1S modded to look like a J1N1F. Added top, bottom and front Turret with a Ho-5 20mm. Added a 10x50kg bomb spawn load. Added a modded 600kgJ.

Very interesting variant! Thank you very much,  JoHNy_SpRoCKeTs1!  ;D

Any chance we might be able to man the turrets in a future version of this cool aircraft?   :)

I do enjoy your work but I don't understand why you post a mod then remove it a few days later. Your work is worth sharing with others later in the future. You should start your own threads for work keep all the links active so everyone can enjoy them.

Hey, just wondering if anyone has a link to zip_comic's J1N1-F (the original field mod version he posted), I'd like it for testing purposes.

(I do know that the J1N1-F is in Epervier's pack, but it isn't quite working right in my game, so I'm curious if the independent download version will)
