guys, please, it's important - if a mod is released that uses the high res textures by default, it MUST CLEARLY STATE SO in the first post.
it is, in effect, a pre-requisite and needs to be noted as such, as not everyone uses/can use the HD mod.
to save yourselves from lots of potential tech/bug questions...
and on that note, a huge thanks for this great plane! :D

while beta testing this cool plane, i did some color variants in my own haphazard skinning style, lol.
these are far from perfect, and based largely on my imagination, but should do in a pinch until the serious skinners get stuck in. ;D

On the skins I have a whacky thing when I try an HD skin:

The fighter that was going to replace the zero! But the earthquake of 1942 destroyed the factory that was going to build it, killing about 200 factory workers, including about 70 young students that studied to build this plane! Japan went through a lot of work to keep it a secret! If this had been in full operational service they would have had way more problems to get air superiority in the pacific theater! one of japans top aces called this plane the best fighter he ever flew!

Hi, sorry to be a pest but high res textures won't come out. Have installed this in JSGME just comes up the same. Using UP3 with windows7, tried True colour for UP3x and High res textures in normal and light just get that purple Sam. Can't figure what I'm doing wrong.

Having a problem with no ammo though... I start the mission and guns fire fine. I get near the enemy ships or aircraft and receive a no ammo notice? Anyone else run into this?

I haven't tried this plane against ships yet, but when it comes to enemy planes, the guns shoot just fine ...

I'm using a game setup that has only a few mods... so will go through and check to see if I can find some item that is conflicting with this mod in my setup.
It is quite the bird though... will enjoy seeing how it matches up against the F4U-4 or the La-7. 8)

On my end, when I select the plane from the list in QMB, the plane I had earlier selected stays in view instead of the A7M coming into view.

It looks like something going wrong with the armament. Is there some dependency I need to actually use this mod? AI Engines mod? SAS ModAct?
As it stands, I'm installing this on top of what is basically an HSFX6 installation but it does have a lot of other stuff on top of it already so maybe something is conflicting. If no one knows off hand what is causing this I will probably do some trouble shooting to see what's going on.

I wonder if there is a template for this plane? It really deserves more skins.
And even just a void skin would be a help since it's not really that hard to make a very basic template ... but without some sort of guideline to go by, it's so hard to make the necessary lines, rivets and stuff on the skins ... due to downscaling to 256 colors, lots of the details become smudged and blurred and hard to make out ...

Well, gladly, we have the 4.09 version of this lovely aircraft. The bird definately shows a lot of promise. However, there are still lots of things to improve there:
1) the external model: the upper nose section (supercharger intake or whatever it is) still not pronounced well enough unlike nose lower section intake
2) I have a gutt feeling that its flight model was borrowed from a European aircraft: it is way to heavy and sluggish even by WW2 American standards. I even had a hard time outmaneuvering Hellcats. Its climb rate is modest too. By 1944 standards, especially when compared to N1K2-J, J2M3/5 and even 1941 Bf-109F-4 it is still a "sitting duck." In reality this bird of prey was so potent that it should have had given the Anglo-Americans a tough time, of course, if its fate wouldn't have been so unfortunate.
3) Armament. The gun armament can be changed from default 2x20mm+2x13.2mm to 4x20mm. However, either option does not bring to any external changes: Type 99 Mk4 20 mm cannon looks quite different from the 13.2 mm Type 2 machinegun. The differences can be clearly observed on the A6M5c Zero where these two guns are installed in the wings side by side.

You know it has its very own flightmodel and its not underpowered at all takes off like rocket fighter,and manoeuvres like God so no problems there,but later on its not a bad idea to have a the 4x20mm version which used the longer barrel Type 99-2 Model 5 cannon similar to ones on the N1K2-J Shiden Kai.

I've been flying it quite a lot, and as player it handles well, is fast, maneuverable and well armed ...
But as an AI plane, it's not very aggressive when encountering opponents and doesn't display much evasive action either ... maybe some tweaking of the FM to correct this? It was after all a fighter ...

Well, I must say that after the v 1.1 patch (that includes flap patch by Gerd) the flight characteristics definately improved. The plane definately began to turn and climb better.
However, still not as good as Ki-84 and J2M5. Try A7M2 against 1943 Bf-109G-6 (without MW-50!) and you'll instantly feel and see what I mean. In contrast, with Ki-84 and J2M3/5 I just tare these Bf-109G-6s and even FW-190A-5/6 apart. The latter are no match for the former, either in climb and acceleration rates, not to mention the agility. As for the A7M2, it is fairly fast, accelerates modestly well, but again not even close to J2M3/5. I had a hard time outmaneuvering even the Hellcats, which were supposedly outdated by 1944, when exposed to the newer breed of Japanese fighters. It just doesn't turn as easily as the Ki-84 and the J2M3/5, despite having a much greater wing area. In my view, this is something that needs to be refined in the patches to come.
The external model still needs some refinement, but I think it is a matter of time.
Overall, the A7M2 definately is another jewel of this wonderful game, a jewel so much craved throughout many years.

A little bug report:
1. the plane is not in level when on the ground, it leans to the left a little. some collision box issue i guess
2. the gears position converge. i'm not really sure if this is a bug or not, but i think they should be parallel.

Just a suggestion that the ammo load seems too low for fighter this size I would say at least double the ammo load for both heavy machine guns and cannons.

When this plane's folder is in my #DBW folder (not even activated) I get an immediate (not 5%, 60% or 70%) error trying to load the game, saying the .exe file has encountered an issue. As soon as I take the folder out, the game loads just fine.

Very interesting aircraft. The lines are very, very attractive unlike most Japanese aircraft.
Id ask that the guys critiquing the ammo loadout and/or performance to please post figures/sources. I'm really curious. A quick cursory search of the interwebs shows she was pretty slow (390mph) compared against the other end war fighters (109K 440mph, 109D 438, P-51D 437-all "-ish" of course.).
Im sure facts and figures regarding performance and loadout would be appreciated by the mod makers.

Finally I arrived to install it in my game (Patch 4.101 + SAS ModAct 3.0c) - At first tries the plane just won't show up on the mission-loading-screen.
It might be interesting for those who have the same problem, that I solved it by installing The "Weapons_Japan"-file which is in the 409-Install of the same plane.

You need to keep in mind that the speed of 630km/h was achieved without WEP. The A7M2 would have been able to reach considerably higher speeds using WEP.
Unlike other nations, the Japanese measured top speed and other performance figures using military power ( continuously safe power without WEP ), which resulted in very conservative "official" figures. This has been confirmed numerous times by captured Japanese operating manuals that gave significantly lower "top speed" figures than captured aircraft (that weren't in the best condition) could manage.
The official Japanese "top speed" for the Ki-84 for instance was 631 km/h. However, US test pilots were able to reach 687km/h in the Ki-84 using WEP. This despite the fact that they didn't fully know how to get the most out of its supercharger. Japanese pilots and technicians said that with WEP the Ki-84 was able to reach 700km/h. Since WEP figures were never officially used by the Japanese, the difference between the two in the Ki-84 is a good example of what difference in performance can be expected between official Japanese figures and the WEP performance. This difference in performance was confirmed by US pilots that met Japanese aircraft in combat, stating that they were faster in combat than US tests suggested.
Saburo Sakai also confirmed that the official performance figures of Japanese aircraft were reached without using WEP and that using WEP gave a considerable boost in performance.

Thank You a lot to Gerd for the update with opening canopy, working tailhook and animated cowl flaps!
Looks like my FM fixes are lost in Gerd's update because I didn't update the source folder. Gerd took the outdated FM files in the source folder and edited them so that my supercharger gear and speed adjustments were lost.
Anyway, I attached an updated FM with my fixes and updated source folder. This FM has working tailhook and opening canopy like in Gerd's version as the only changes compared to the release FM. I didn't add folding wings yet because the folding animation didn't work for me and I don't want invisible folded wings to confuse in carrier spawn. I also didn't add Gerd's roll rate fix yet because I'd like to get some feedback about roll rate and I'd like to know why Gerd changed it. Remember to install Gerd's update before testing this FM version.
Originally, I tried to match the performance data I had and managed to do so pretty well. However, I had way too little information for proper accurate FM. I really hope that someone had some better references with information about sea level speed and WEP power, for example.
Update: I noticed that damaged engine had double cowl flaps and fixed it.
EDIT: Attachment removed because new version in first post has these fixes.

Looking at the sheer size of the A7M2's ailerons, it actually makes sense that the roll rate was quite good.
When Saburo Sakai was asked to test the A7M2, he was eager to see if the rumors about it were true...
After flying it, Sakai said he was amazed by the aircraft. In fact, he said it was the best aircraft he had ever flown.
Sakai said it was very fast and that it was ruggedly built. He said that it could out-climb and out-dive any US fighter of the time.
He said the A7M2's handling was phenomenal and that it would have flown circles around the Hellcat.
He also mentioned that the A7M2 was designed to be capable of combat in excess of 12,000m altitude.

And I also see that the new patch version is 255 mb in size, while the previous one was only 41 mb ... which is quite a difference! Is there any specific reason why the new version is so large?

The raised seat position seems to have been implemented already. I've done a couple of carrier landings using it. :)

Are you using the High Res / True Color Mod?
I have that mod, but have disabled it for the skins as it slows up mu FMB rather considerably ...
Did you remember to re-size the skins (including the default) to 1024x1024 and index them to 256 colors? I did that and it works fine for me.

A blue screen is what happens when Windows goes seriously bananas and crashes. If you have never experienced a windows blue screen of death, then consider yourself blessed ... it is usually the harbinger of serious problems.
If it happens randomly, then it can be due to many reasons. While playing Il-2 it may point to an incompatibility with media drivers that are running at the same time.
And a blue screen is literally an overall blue screen with text warnings ...

I am a 4.09 rebel and I had been complaining about the flight performance of the A7M2: it was really heavy and sluggish, had a maneuverability of an iron. It was nothing like the outstanding aircraft it really was back in 1944, especially given how impressed the Japanese were with its performance. First, I thought that if it was so "outstanding" as is was in this game, then maybe the Japanese were even lucky that it never became operational and that they got the N1K2-J instead. However, after the v.1.1 patch, slowly but steadily, the bird began to show some promise. However, after this latest patch (v.1.3 for my 4.09 game) the aircraft really began to demonstrate impressive performance: it really became lighter, turns a lot better (probably not as good as Zero or even Ki-43 yet, but a lot closer than before), climb rate increased dramatically, although, I would still increase it just a bit. Overall, a merely new aircraft in the old skin. Now I can really challenge both Hellcat and Corsair and even the 1943 Bf-109G-2/6 and the FW-190A-5/6. As for the 3D model some minor issues still need to be fixed: the landing gears are still crooked, also, the wing guns did not stick out that much. To conclude: many thanks to the people who did not spare their time and energy and created this new jewel of this great game and continue with the refinements in the form of updates and patches, both current and future.

haha...sorry folks, i think myself, Jaeger and RAECHER got caught up in some of the mother language, lol. :D
in a nutshell:
after i posted with the pics previously, i was asked if i had first removed the old content and replaced it with the patched content.
i had simply over-written the old content with the new, which seems to be what i did wrong.
i have to first remove it and try again - most likely the hier/3d had some minor change in the update is the cause.
i haven't done it yet, but will get back and let you know how it went when i do. :D

Firstly, thanks to all involved, amazing job!
I've just downloaded the bird and had some fun with it. External model is done beautifully! Looks so smooth! Animations all work like a charm.
Damage modelling is nice too - seems a bit prone to catching fire, but which japanese plane isn't?
A question about armament - or, better said, ammocount: 90/100 rpg for 20mm cannons appear to be awfully low for a 45/46 fighter. Is that OK? Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any info on ammocount (not even in Francillon), but I'd suspect it would have an ammocount similar to other late war IJN designs, namely N1K and J2M fighters, which both carried 200 - 250 rpg for cannons. Huge wing also doesn't appear to have any problems accomodating more ammo. Also, starboard wing weapons appear to have some 10 or so rounds less than port ones. Is this OK?
Flight modelling:
Flies like an angel! Stable, smooth, agile! Energy retention during maneouvering is excellent. Dives like a sledgehammer - got it to over 1000kph TAS before it started breaking up. Guess those pesky Jugs won't be able to just dive away anymore. Altitude performance is excellent - got it up to 12.000 m without problems! At 10.000 m feels like home - stable, fast, maneouverable.
Strong vs '44 opposition, but can't get rid of the feeling it would get eaten alive by '46 rivals. Performance seems spot on tho, 635 kph at 6.600 m without wep. Appears to be Hellcat nemesis. Excellent job with the FM!

Tried the first version and got the pink airplane. I don't wish to mess with the HD mod. How do I apply the above-referenced 1024x1024 skin version? Do I place this folder inside the #DBW folder instead of the HD version of the A7M? Or do I place it inside the A7M (HD version) folder? Or should this go into the #UP folder?

This download comes with "A7M2\summer\skin*.tga"
so the correct path to replace the HD default skin is:
DBW\... #SAS\... #UP#\... or whatever you have as mods folder
A7M2\3do\plane\A7M2\summer
and there the four skin*.tga files. ;)

I can answer this; it turns out you need a Japanese weapons pack (I don't have a link i'm afraid).
I discovered this, as I somewhat lazily copied the code from this for the R2Y1 _ neglcted to delete the loadouts, but as they didn't show up in game, that was fine by me - until some smart arse installed the pack and turned my recon plane into a bomber :D

Hi! Anyone, help me please, I have problem with the shadow...
I believe you need to have your graphics settings on "Perfect" for the shadow to display correctly.
Also, when did you download the A7M2? I ask because judging by the landing gear in you screenshot, it doesn't look like you have the latest version of the 3d.

When I decided to solve thin problem I tried all files of Reppuu ever mentioned in this thread, but nevertheless all these things about 3do are the same... even tried to resize textures plane uses to 1024>... Problem doesn't solve with this. About graphics - I can't switch it to "Perfect" because of by laptop specifications... :(

Have a look at your version of the A7M2's landing gear and compare it to the screenshots below.
This is what the latest 3d of the A7M2's landing gear should look like... Notice the angle of the gear and wheels.
The gear struts should come almost straight down when viewed from the front and the wheels should have a bit of negative camber (the bottom of the wheels should be slightly farther outward than the top of wheels). Additionally, the gear & wheels should also have zero toe-in (point straight forward when viewed from below).

I installed this on 4.12.2 and the game now crashes when I click the QMB button.
I can't find any logs.
EDIT: I uninstalled this and my game STILL doesn't work. Time to reinstall all my mods AGAIN.

This aircraft works perfectly with 4.12.2 + Modact 5.3, so you must have either another mod or an entry that causes problems in your install. Uninstalling this mod won't make a difference because the problem lies somewhere else.
If you don't have the logs anymore, and you've checked that all entries are correct, you can install this aircraft over a clean 4.12.2 + Modact 5.3 install, check that it works (it should), and then add other mods one-by-one to see which mod causes the problem. But as always the easiest way to find what mod or entry causes the problem is if you can provide a log file.

Mitsubishi A7M3 Reppu/A7M3-J Reppu-Kai - A7M3 differentiates from the A7M2 with having 6 x 20mm's, and the A7M3-J had an elongated fuselage, wider-wing span, turbocharged engine and 6 x 30mm's. 4 wing mounted, and 2 behind the cockpit in shrage musik.
A7M3-J, because unlike its other variants, it wasn't to be a fighter, it was to be strict interceptor. It had an elongated fuselage, larger wings, and the main thing i absolutely love about it, is the 6 x 30mm cannons. The plane itself would be strong and reinforced to be able to handle such powerful armament.

Works in my 1946 v1.410.1 DBW 1.71 install no problem with the 1024 mode enabled. Love the reflections and smoothness of the model, a very svelte kite indeed :P
Might, at some point, could the exhaust pipes or exhaust gas 'cut-outs/troughs' that are behind the cowling, have their forward edges 'raised lips' removed - the little bit that sticks up in a thin ridge between the engine bay and each pipe/gas cut-out/sunken area; it could also mean a few less polygons on the model that could be used somewhere else, and would appear more aerodynamic.
Any ideas if these exhaust troughs symbolic of extra metal/steel heatshield plates (like on the ejector stub exhausting Zero's) or are actual aero deteails ? I don;t mean to question, or be rude, I am jiust engineeringly curious about things :)
..Also, alas, I have noticed the left/port wing shadows do not exist as such, but there are shadows for that sides outer cannon, inner wheel well door and the flap and aileron, and all the other shadows for the rest of the A/C do work on my version, but I do have the latest 'All in One' 3D Engines & Propfix by Jeronimo, it could also be related to that perhaps - I will try it with that mod '-' deacitivted.
I did dl the Reppu's A7M2 (& Jeronimo's 3d Eng' Prop fix) zip file for on Monday earlier this week from the mediafire link; in-case their is/was a different uploaded repackaged version; update, side/re-grade or other mixup problem.

while beta testing this cool plane, i did some color variants in my own haphazard skinning style, lol.
these are far from perfect, and based largely on my imagination, but should do in a pinch until the serious skinners get stuck in. ;D

Hi there, I have long wanted to use these skins, and now I finally have a modded game I DL'ed them and installed. Problem is I either get the bright pink issue or just a mess.
I am using BAT WAW with the latest update, and with the correctly functioning HD module (other aircraft don't have the issue)
Any help would be apprieciated

what BAT version are you on? (asking because of the pink. Should not happen in 4.1.2)
But I am afraid there was a 3d makeover at one point for this plane, rendering older skins unusable.

It is 4.1.2
That would make sense, thanks for the advice, all the issues were sorted with the 4.1.2 update with the other aircraft, if this one had it's own overhaul that would make sense. These skins look really cool, but I don't think it is an inherent problem
