Title: B-29 & B-50 Pack by Aviator Mod Team
Post by: SAS~Anto on June 30, 2013, 06:44:36 AM
These have been sitting around for a little while and as work on them slowly recommences, thought might preview them. They were first discussed as an addon to JetWar but they weren't started on until JetWar v1.2 was preparing for release. There is no release date in sight at the moment. There is still a fair bit of 3D and skinning work to go, however the project is now in a state we can show it to you all.

First a quick tour of what it will contain:
- Updates to the existing B-29 mods (B-29, B-29 Silverplate and KB-29P)
- New variants: B-29 Tarzon, B-50A and B-50D (potential for KB-50J)
- New weapons: Tarzon, GAM-63
- A few other surprises along the way

Credits for project so far:
- KB-29P by Flakiten
- New B-50 3D by Red_Fox90 and Lisek
- Tarzon and GAM-63 3D by Red_Fox90
- Java work, loadouts and B-50 flight models by Anto
- Addition work (stock 3D cleanup, flight model updates) by Benitomuso

Before showing off the pictures, a small request to the community. If you have any explicit information about the loadouts of the B-50, please let me know. I am curious as to whether they carried the Mk 80 series of bomb, as well as the M117.

B-29 Tarzon - This was a variant modified in field to accommodate the 12000lbs TARZON (Tallboy - Azon/Range ONly guided bomb). Only three aircraft of this configuration existed and featured the single piece plexiglass B-50D nose and a modified bomb bay. Whilst the TARZON was used succesfully on numerous occasions, the bomb fins proved fragile and an incident forced the end of this program. However, an unusable but important variant from the Korean War.

B-50A - Originally known as the B-29D, the B-50 was a significant upgrade to the B-29 which made extensive use of newer alluminium alloys to reduce weight. Featuring four R4360 engines, it also received an enlarged vertical stabilizer, new enlarged flaps, late-model turrets and improved flight controls. However the new technology made the B-50A heavier and reduced its effective range. Whilst never seeing combat, it served an important role as part of the Strategic Bomber Command's nuclear armed fleet.

B-50D- The definitive and final development of the Superfortress. To improve its range, the B-50D received optional wing drop tanks and installation of the Boeing 'Flying Boom System' receptacle, making it the first truly global strategic nuclear bomber. In addition, the B-50D featured a simplified plexiglass nose and improved avionics, reducing the number of crew members by 2. It also served as test platform for numerous projects, including development of the ill-fated GAM-63 (on of USA's first cruise missiles). Later in life, many B-50Ds were converted into tankers or into weather aircraft

Woo hoo! As  you know from my post a few mos ago, I am very enthusiastic aobut the B-50 for 1950s alternate history scenarios. Please make sure the default insignia/skin has the correct insignia with the strips in the bars, as I assume the screen is still in the devlopment stage with the 1942 insignia. Were you able to deal wiht the refueling doors and the turret automatically turning to the side to clear them for refueling?

The pic of the Nagasaki type nuke I sent U was the only one I could find at the time. That bird was really fast and very powerful with those engines, far more than the B-29. I really hope you can get this out pretty soon, but Im not pressuring you, I'm just being enthusiastic; I will put it to good use quickly in the FMB.

Holy crap that's awesome!

I love the look of the R4360 engines on the B-50A. I don't know why, but they just look bad ass!

These don't have new default skins as of yet, so just using default game decals. Haven't modelled the refuelling doors yet as previously we had no good close up pictures or schematics of them, but we plan to add them (and have the turret turn ;) )

May I add, we hope to increase the detail of the default B-29 model as well. That fuselage could afford to be a bit rounder don't you reckon?

That's a great shot with that odd missle.

Yeah Anto, I figured you were still outside the default skin for it.

That 1/48 scale model I sent you pix of was fairly complicated with those doors and the turret having to turn to the right. I was wondering how much trouble it would be to model that. I'm really looking forward to this project. Can be used well into the 60s. I'm sure I saw one or two of those when I was a kid in the early 60s, as I thought it was a B-29 tanker at the time (I kept up with all that stuff since i was old enough to read). They would show up at Egland AF base in Fla about 100 miles away.

Interesting that they classified it a Medium bomber by that time, but compared to a B-36 Im sure it was.

The refueling doors probably don't need to be modelled in detail except for the closest views, but you know much more about that than I do.

And yeah, the B-29 fuselage could be a bit rounder, as long as it doesn't adversely affect the frame rate too much. Especially in the close up views, as it would make flying it a bit more convincing.

I forgot htat I'd posted that much. I never did find if it carried two nukes, though I did look. I'll still be looking out for such. Wish we could find a crewman on one, like my late Dad's late friend who served on one. Wish Id recorded all his friends flying/war stories. That later version of the nagasaki looking nuke sure stayed in service for a long time.

I still have it from my brief stint in the School, I love it and I think it is a great mod pack. Just a little more effort and this will be a very, very good pack.

    The best of luck!

Thank you Anto for the news. Sorry to hear about this project.
I was looking forward to seeing these fine aircraft and create new skins
for them and those new rockets.
Hopefully someone will pick up this project and continue finishing it until the end.

We shall wait.
