Title: Early jets' canopies: roundness

Early jets' canopies: roundness
**********************************

As asked in a request by Boyan, here it comes.

(https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/9456/gv9q4rdx9309k0p4g.jpg) (https://www.mediafire.com/view/gv9q4rdx9309k0p/mig15.jpg)

For the moment it's just the MiGs and the Panther that get some more polys here and there.

The MiG 15/17 got a rounder canopy only, while the Panther was up for some sort of a facelift, with new canopy, reworked frontal section and a new pair of wingtip tanks; it was a project i already started back in last year, but as things got in the middle i never found the way to complete and release it.

I want to highlight that the greatest part of the credits should go to the people that created these little gems and in particular to the two great modders that originally made them first: PeterD for the MiGs and Flakiten for the F9F2.

Instructions: unzip and add the folder in your #DBW mods folder (this mod has been created and tested only in a DBW environment).

F9F2 Overhaul (now with Birdman's LOD fixes): https://www.mediafire.com/download/c99ti94xh66kda6/F9F2_Overhaul_19813.7z (https://www.mediafire.com/download/c99ti94xh66kda6/F9F2_Overhaul_19813.7z)

Thank you Red Fox for making my request into reality! Unfortunately, only MiGs work for me, Im on 4.09, UP 2.01... Tried putting F9F folder to load first, nothing, tried disabling the F9F mod with freddy cockpit  so only the stock F9F is left (wouldnt work of course, it had a P-80 cockpit, silly me), still no luck. The plane itself doesnt show up when clicking on it in quick mission.... Do you have any suggestions? Is it complicated to make them 4.09 compatible?

Btw, while reading Corky Meyers Flight Journal (awsome test pilot book) today, I got to a part where he flies the F9F prototype for the first flights, and I thought how cool would it be if Red Fox released F9F cockpit today, and guess what I saw when I came back home and got here... Thank you!

Thank you so much. Little things do mean alot. Really appreciate the little update for the F9F. BTW, I noticed that the F9F pilot never wears his O2 mask, no matter the altitude. Anyone else noticed this or is it just me? Any fix? Any help appreciated. Once again, swell job.

In 4.09, or other modacts, where you've manually added the F9F mod, i guess you should just take the files in the F9F2 Overhaul folder and overwrite the previous files contained in your original F9F folder. Let me know if the trick works ;)

no problem here on my install; had to battle a similar issue yesterday with the Corsair addon canopies in a DBW 1.71 install with the new TFM; finally solved it by renaming it with a ! in front of the name;
did the same here with both mods and they work just fine;

cheers

Thank you very much. The O2 mask really dresses that baby up. This is all much appreciated.

The F9F seems to work ok in 4.12, RedFox, but not with this addon.

Tried the manual overwrite, no luck. Tried putting ! in front, still nothing. Tried overwriting several files at a time, this is what I get from the files in the red squares, the ones in the middle cause the plane not to show up:

Duffy, did you copy the 3do folder directly to the Panther 3do folder?

this is in 4.12

Yep, tried that. It's listed on the FMB selection screen list but doesn't allow me to select it.
Tried copying the indivuial files directly into the F9F folder, same result. Copied all the files that seem to do with the pilot i.e. head, helmet hier, hmask, nnmask, jacket, pilot, seat, etc, they don't prevent me from using the a/c but don't make any visual difference. Strange. Maybe just one file getting in the way somewhere. It's a puzzle.

Duffy, have you got your Panther sorted? If not, I have an idea that might help.

Bravo, the F9F works fine in DBW & 4.12. However can't get Red_Fox's tweeks to work in 4.12. Any ideas?

Yes, I tried on a clean SAS MA 5.11 and found out that I had to have the  F-86_Sabre_Cockpits  from JetWar 1.1 which made the Panther work then I placed a  #  in front of F9F2 Overhaul Folder like this   #F9F2_Overhaul  then it worked for me. You should give that a shot.

To make the panther work in a clean 5.11 mod act, you simply add the catapult related fix attached to the bottom of the very first panther post in the jets section.

This fix allowing it to run with out the carrier catapult mod. Then adjust the new canopy folder name as Bravo said to load the new canopy first.

No still no soap. Installed the F-86 pits, everything still the same. The F9F flies fine but none of the tweeks that Red_Fox gives us. Placing "#" in front of Overhaul Folder I loose The F9F altogether. Running out of options here.

Dang....  :(  it should work....works in mine, and you see Bravo's pics. I don't know.

If it were me Duffys... At this point, I would delete the panther altogether and try a clean download. Of course I am a "new" user of mods compared to some, so I would get a second opinion.  ;D But I am flying the new canopy in 4.12 ModAct 5.11, and it looks great! (Well done RedFox!) Ive been hunting Lavockin 9s over "Korea".

P.S.: I did not need the F-86 pits for the Panther... only the aforementioned catapult fix at the bottom of this first post:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,980.0.html
After this it loaded right up!

Hope you get it working!

Ok, got it to work on my 4.09! Finally!! Turns out I needed new Sabre pilots, https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,21404.0.html.

Thank you Red Fox for this beautiful mod, the Panther now looks just, I dont know, really Panterish!! Just beautiful!

UPDATE

Birdman sent me an improved version of the Panther with the following fixes:

Quote
- I checked the LOD values for best possible compatibility with DBW version.
- I added the missing windshield to LOD1.
- I used your previous LOD0 cockpit internals as LOD1 for them to fill the hole left by them in LOD1.
- I tested my MATLAB code to smoothen the boundaries between CF, nose and tail because the boundary in nose was so visible.

The new download has been added in the first page.

S! and a hip hip hurrah for Birdman ;)
