Title: fps drop when dropping bombs
Post by: moepkid on August 21, 2016, 04:41:54 AM
Hey all,

I finally installed CUP because of the availabillity of the torrents! Thanks for the great work :D I do have one error after fixing a couple myself.

I did a quick mission and took off from an airport on the crimea map. The airplane was a A-20G with a 40x parabombs (bombs with the chutes). When I dropped them, My fps crumbled to 5-10 instead of the constant 60fps i had. The logfile doesnt show any errors so I was wondering if somebody else has the same problem.

thanks!

This is a good question.. one that i set about finding a solution to and i share my findings now:

There are 6 key areas that will control fps

1. conf.ini Manually alter the graphics settings (between 0-3 in most cases), then lock the conf.ini down by making it read-only.
If you are not already familiar with conf.ini i suggest you take time to read this thread:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=9756.0

2. Nvidia Control Panel Graphic card settings

3. Catalyst Control Centre CPU overclocking
(https://s10.postimg.cc/gdfhal8y1/ccc_resized.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/z5rce65c5/)

4. MSI Afterburner GPU overclocking
(https://s10.postimg.cc/hpv72fcix/msi_resized.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/5b8f23l0l/)

5. Windows Task Manager Shut down unneeded services and processes to free up system resources.
(https://s10.postimg.cc/kr1od4th5/wtm_resize.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/x5ogdgkz9/)

6. Disable your network card in Win Device Manager. Then close down Win Firewall and other associated network service. (try doing this with a steam game haha)

Balancing these 6 areas is the key. Or buy some ridiculously expensive gaming pc...

NB: I would dissuade anyone from downloading and running any 'magic programs' that make your pc faster for gaming...

The airplane was a A-20G with a 40x parabombs (bombs with the chutes).
All objects that have a parachute with a reduction or increase of the scale are real "shit" for the game!
Just check your LOG when you cast off these bombs, boxes, etc!
You will see thousands of lines of errors that significantly slow down the game!
Imagine the phenomenon if you are 16 planes cast off 40 parabombs or xx cargoBox !  ::(

The cause is simple: the shadows of the parachute!
There are 3 types of parachutes:
- 1/2 scale
- 1 scale
- 1.5 scale
But in all three cases is the same object "parachute" that is used!
I guess in CUP this problem has not been solved.

Personally I have definitely settled the problem: I removed the shadows of the parachute object (in my 409/UP2.01) !  :D

Absolutely right Gabriel.

When I read this sentence in the OP
The logfile doesnt show any errors
I had to chuckle.
I want to believe!
But I can't ;)

got the same error, but dunno what causes it since its a stock ordnance

error msg is : WARNING: HW Shadows not works on mesh with scaling

seems that some mod had wrong classfiles where the scaling of all chutes were reduced and this error was already in DBW:https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25100.0.html

Had the wrong list. The list didnt show anything at all so now I got that working and it said WARNING: HW Shadows not works on mesh with scaling. I tried to find out how to disable the shadows for those things but I can't seem to find out how.

And 409 !
That's why I've been able to respond!  :D

Are you using cup?

That scaling error is exactly what Gabriel mentioned initially in this thread.
You can scale meshes (that's actually what most franken mods do), however when the mesh has a shadow, the shadow will not work anymore and the error as shown here will be thrown.
We do have a "mesh sizer" available in the superschool where you can easily adjust a meshes' size without having to scale it from hier.him.
That way we could get working parachutes with shadows easily.

Best regards - Mike

So youre point is that I'll have to wait on a patch? That's no problem at all. Love the mod now because it was easier to install with the torrents and stuff. Just wanted to have some things clear!

I think Gabriel provided a working patch for the issue in the OP already.
The only thing left to improve would be to update the patch so that parachutes have shadows again.
I tried to point out an easy way to create such an updated patch, that's all.

And how do I apply this patch? I searched for a 3do map, but couldnt find it in my install directory

You install it like any other mod.
Take Epervier's 7zip file, extract it and put the folder "01__Parachute_noShadows" into your mods folder, whatever name it has, be it "#DOF", "#TGA", "#WAW", "#JTW" or just "#SAS".

Best regards - Mike

If I understood everything ...
Yes we can redo 3 parachutes in 3 different sizes.
But in this case must redo all Java codes of all Class who use Class Chute (com\maddox\il2\objects\air).
This includes all the weapons (parabomb, Cargobox, etc ...)!  :-X   :-|
Or/and create 2 new Class... Chute1 and Chute2 ...?!  :-X

Yes indeed Gabriel, since the scaling takes place in Java Code, the proposed fix would imply a change to both 3D meshes and Java Code.
