Title: USS Ranger (CV-4)
Post by: tvister on April 15, 2019, 02:52:35 PM
Good day. I want to try myself in the construction of aircraft carriers. In my opinion, the game really lacks early-carrier aircraft carriers. I will try to create the first specialized aircraft carrier USA Ranger. Since I have few good drawings, I do not think to create a high-precision model. I will try to build a model of the Ranger in the second half of 1941.

Great news tvister. I always enjoy using your ships, they add so much to the game. The Ranger adds an important ship both for the Mediterranean theatre and the Pacific. The Wasp is another good subject but I am sure your hands are busy enough!

Thank you all for the good feedback. Tell me in what position to leave the chimneys? Marching position, the pipes stand vertically. Takeoff-landing position, the pipes are located horizontally. The best option is to add pipe rotation animation, but I don't have such high knowledge ...

I would leave the stacks down, as that is the form the pilots would normally see it in.
It would be nice to have some java coding to make parts animate, perhaps when friendly aircraft come within a certain range.
But it would need a coding guru to take an interest for that to happen I guess.

I can add deck lighting and navigation lights, but the animation is beyond my reach.

Looking good so far. One comment though. The forecastle deck will need to be more rounded at the bow to accommodate the quad 40mm AA gun which you will be wanting to add later.
On the main deck below that level it becomes sharper. See reference images

Thanks for the comment, be sure to consider it in the work. I think the composition of weapons will correspond to the second half of 1941 and include: eight 127 mm. Mark 10 guns, six 28mm. four barrel guns Mark 1 and 24 12.7mm M2 Browning machine gun.

The other visual feature evident in the photo is the shading change on the side of the hull at the level of the main deck.
If you have a line of vertices following the main deck then you will be able to sort the smoothing groups to replicate this feature.

Added and customized lighting for Ranger. I do not have accurate lighting and signaling schemes for the early American aircraft carriers, so the lighting system was presented in the form of two luminous parallels, and the island’s lighting was added. Lighting classes based on Hiryu from Damawo. It seems everything is ready, but in order to adjust the lighting it took three evenings and still the stern running light did not burn. The problem of turning off the lights is still not solved, when attacking the enemy, the question of searchlights is also open. I also liked the "fireworks", from Browning 0.5.

Good day.
Introducing the beta version of the American Ranger aircraft carrier.
Ship Information:https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Ranger_(CV-4) (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Ranger_(CV-4))
The model reflects the state of the aircraft carrier after modernization in September 1941.
Stably works in version 4.12.2m SAS Mod 5.30.
The model is test, there are problems with both the normal model and the damage model, lighting. The work with skins is not finished, unfortunately I was not able to set up the work of searchlights. In addition, I could not find the exact location of the anti-aircraft machine guns.

Used sources:

No! Your Classes are compliant.
And as I said, I removed all your lines of code to make it a standard PA from the IL-2 database!
There's something else... I may have an idea of the cause of the problem... I'll see as soon as I have 10 minutes!

Hi tvister,

Thanks for your hard work on providing this much needed ship to Il-2. I have downloaded the file and am going to install it but I have a question.  I know from having installed other ships by other authors that sometimes they are very specific in the readme about where to place the various ini files, which I have been given to believe means tat if placed somewhere else the ship will not work or the game will even crash, so I have always followed the specific install instructions. This is especially true with respect to the ships.ini file. I notice that in your readme while you provide all the relevant data you have not mentioned if they have to be placed in a specific location within the respective ini files. I think I can get the chiefs, stationary, and technics files inserted okay, just putting them with the other carriers, but I'm not sure about the ships.ini info. When I open the ships.ini file do I place the Ranger information at the very end, or somewhere else? I'm sorry to ask but I'm not super computer literate and I'm always afraid if I don't get very precise install instructions I might cause myself problems. Thanks again for all of your hard work in providing such superior work.

The "ships.ini" file has no particular function other than to provide data.
For convenience you can paste the information at the end of the file.  ;)
And if you need to find this information just use the "search" function of your text file editor (Notepad)!

Is there something in the ships.ini files that needs to be addressed so that the ship works in the 4.12.2 VPMod pack?

I used the following install procedure:

Any help is greatly appreciated !!!  :)

If you have a problem it is the LOG that you should post... correctly!

Why is it that the folks here make it so difficult for people to ask for help … I'm done with you people. This is the second time that you "Epervier" seem to have a problem with me. Well no worries, I'm done with you and this web site.

To the SAS team … delete all my campaigns from your web site, I'm no longer allowing this web site to host my campaigns, period.

Good day. A game crash of 70% indicates missing entries in the ini-files.
The readme contains copies of all the ini from my game, version 4.12.2m SAS Mod 5.30. related to the ranger model.
Respectfully.

And you may be enjoying continuing to behave in such a casual, immature way that you do not respect the most elementary rules of the forum!

It is however with pleasure that I bring my help... to those who respect the simplest rules of this site.
You choose exile.... perfect, that's fine with me! Goodbye! Goodbye!

I dont normally repond to these conflicts but this time i have to say how childish and immature D humphrey! You screw up an install then expect Epervier to rectify it without any logfile (youve been on here 2 years you know rules by now ffs). Shame on you and goodbye!!!

What I see is a problem with a bomb.
Have you added any other Mods?
Ranger doesn't use that kind of stuff.
I can't say anything more....

No, what I pointed out to you is not about ships....
I didn't see any alarms about the Ranger.
I think if you remove the Ranger you'll have the same problem... I think !

Good afternoon steven197106.
Unfortunately, I do not know how to help you. In my game 4.12.2m SAS Mod 5.30, everything works fine. Perhaps the problem is in armament, in old versions of the game in the ship.ini file there is no gun_Browning50tdual. And yet, 28 mm skins. and 28mmD have non-standard sizes for IL. Try replacing them with skins from message No. 134.http://forum.aviaskins.com/showthread.php?t=5207&page=7 (http://forum.aviaskins.com/showthread.php?t=5207&page=7)
Sincerely.

Very beautiful model of carrier.
Fine details are made - stairs, life rafts, internal hangars.
Well-executed artillery and AAA posts.
 Thanks again Tvister

Having trouble unzipping this, I've downloaded twice but 7zip says "cannot open 'ranger.rar' as archive". Other RAR files unzip with no problem. Any ideas? or am I in Alzheimers mode?

Wonderful model.  It looks absolutely wonderful.

Observation regarding the navigation lights.  I assume that the lights can be disabled by placing a dash in front of the folder?

A large ship like a carrier would have had two mast head lights with the second (rear most masthead light) higher than the first on the highest mast.  Where the front mast head light would be placed on a CV I do not know.  The mast head lights, just like the port and starboard running lights would be "on" solid so a lookout on another ship could tell the aspect of the ship in relationship to the ship with the lookout.  The navigation lights, unlike on aircraft do not blink at least in the USN.

I can't answer for WW2 submarines, but when I served aboard two of the boats some 30 years ago we had a Submarine ID beacon in addition to the traditional navigation lights when running on the surface at night.  It is a yellow/amber light that is installed at the top of the snorkel mast.  When activated it flashes in a sequence of three flashes then off and repeats as long as it is activated.  We only used this beacon while I was onboard at the completion of a couple of our fleet  exorcises at night so we did not get run over by the surface ships when it was over.  We would also use it when training with surface ships and aircraft to ID our position when they couldn't find us then start the process all over again.

I am assuming the Ranger is not compatible with the Carrier Take Off MOD.  I just tested it with four wildcats and three blew up upon spawning, I took number 4 and it did not get damaged.  With the CTO disabled all four planes spawn just fine.

I too have the F4F spawning problem in BAT 3.7.1. with the Ranger. Everything is fine with the stock F4f until I install the modded version from another certain site. The flight deck is left with 2 surviving Wildcats out of around 8. This is followed by the wheel chocks floating off along the deck sternwards and slowly disappearing in the distance...can anybody help please?

I think it's kind of the same thing I had or something similar (F4F-4 and FM-2).
Strangely enough, I had this problem while other rebels didn't!
In my case, I found the source of the problem. The leader of the group, placed the farthest left on the bridge, exploded! Dragging x other planes into this explosion.
I modified the generic Class of the game (com.maddox.il2.ai.AirportCarrier.class) to change the spacing between planes.
With the value 6 instead of 5 everything works!
But then I preferred to delete this mod and go back to the stock versions that I had already heavily modified.

I have the superb USS Ranger installed and working fine in my VP_mod Pack 5.30, 4.12.2m. I made a few test missions in the FMB.
I was wondering though, I made all the ini. enteries as stated in the Read me.txt with the exception of: (technics.properties USSRangerCV4_41 USS Ranger CV4). There did not seem to be an similar type entry of the same type in my STD/com/Maddox/il2/objects/technics.ini.  So, I did not add this entry. Ship still sails just fine. Should the entry have been required elsewhere? Just wondering, NOT complaining. Thanks.

You confuse the two files technics.properties and technics.ini !
technics.properties or technics_ru.properties or technics_fr.properties or ...

technics.properties  ==> \i18n\
This file is only used to have a custom object name!
It's the equivalent of Planes_xx.properties !
They are both placed in the same folder!

Hi Epervier and thank you for your reply. Java is completely beyond my knowledge I must confess! Other than a reinstall it looks like I'm stumped. The  restore will at least allow the safe use of the current BAT default F4F-4.  :)
