Hi guys.
So here are some pics of what will be final version of this map, this time with flyable airfields.
It was a hard task to make it, first of all to find good sources...with good pics of the airfield. Fortunately i have been helped by so many people by providing me pics, footages and advices that i would like to thank them so much.
I tried to make it looking like a coral ground as much as possible. I'm using two textures, one at 1024 resolution and standard zoom in the load.ini, the second one at 1024 but zoom 8 on the load.ini in order to give the best low flight resolution and rendering as possible.
Unfortunately for the first texture, i mean the airfield itself, i can't use zoom on the load.ini as it make it uncomptible with the island shape. It would have been a great deal to make the entire airfield at zoom 4 or 8 = it's the best for a really detailed low flight texture.
I'm experimenting those things on some desert maps like Lybia, Sinai, Sand of time, Mto and stock desert map. Only the stock desert maps will be available for download.
I guess the final map will be ready before this week end for all. If you have any advices or datas please post here. Enjoy.

All the other textures are going to be with zoom 2 on load.ini, better rendering when closing to the ground...so i will move the bilding to fit to these resolution.

I'm still working on this. Some things may change before the release. I have to improve the junction parts where airfield textures meet the rest...

Mmm yea why not. But remember those sounds are juste mp3 rip from différent sources, i don't know if it could be used directly as a mod sound ::).
For information, i get some sounds from youtube historical docs, and canon sounds from Company of heroes....there is many many excellent sounds in this game that could be used as sounds for il2 movies but also for the game !

Really does look amazing, cant wait! And much looking forward to Africa repaints- original IL2 African maps had this problem where it was most difficult to judge how high you are flying -200 meters and 20 meters looked and felt the same. Landing was always a pain.

Back again guys. I was working on the lap top these last days after my HDD desktop crash >:( .
So here it is, the DL link for Palau V2 with playable airfield. I changed some things on the actor static so if you have campains under way you will have to start it again.
To install this map:
1 - put the file "redko_Palau" into you mod file like this:
MODS/MAPMODS/maps/redko_Palau
2 - put the texture file "redko_tex" into your Tex file like this:
MODS/MAPMODS/maps/_Tex/redko_tex/Palau
3 - and add in your all.ini file located into your MODS/MAPMODS/maps folder the following line:
redko_palau redko_palau/load.ini
palauOnline redko_palau/Online_load.ini
I HAVE EXISTING MISSIONS/CAMPAINS:
before posting error messages problems on the threat, if you are trying to play missions and/or campains i already have from the stock map for exemple and you get a message saying "error string out of range" do not worry.
i changed some bilding on the new version on this map, so your mission try to load them, and they don't exist anymore you have this message! ;)
solution is easy :
go to missions folder, there we you have the mission or the campains your are trying to play. for EACH mission, locate the .mis file. For EACH mission paying this map, go to "HOUSE" chapter, and erase ALL what you have in this chapter and only this chapter.
check also if the name of the map is correct.....and that's all
save
exit
...and play ;)

To make this map the default Palau, just rename redko_palau into Palau, no need the add redko_palau on load.ini in this case

If it is a real problem i can post a "corrected" map_T...it takes me 5 minutes. But historically the is vegetation on that part of the map, and putting trees there is the only way to simulate this.
Tell me if you want another Map_T without this its very easy for me to do this....same for you guys..

Thank you very much, redko! I seem to get a bit less FPS in this map (not the crappiest rig, new/mid-range) compared to others I downloaded, but it's well worth it. I'll play with my settings and enjoy this beauty!

It's a great map...but....
Wonder if you can play any semi-authentic missions on Japanese side on this map. Americans bombed everyting to dust...and then then the naval bombardment did the rest. Or am I wrong?

Indeed.
I'm afraid that like most of Pto maps this one is made more for US point of view than japanese one.
Maybe some skilled mission/campain maker will make us something interresting from the japanese point of view...well maybe not 100% authentic but least close to it.
I think SAS~Gerax's missions are made for Us side too.

If you assume this map is not Palau but the island of Yap. (A simular island just to the east) Then there are possibilities for Japanese (limited) missions. From Yap there were bomber missions flown when the Americans attacked the Marianes. Also fighters from Yap put up some resistance when the island was bombed. Of course it did not last long. Then the island was "bypassed" with no effective resistance left. Info is not hard to find on wiki. After that the island of Yap was used for bombing practice. The Japanese still on the island with no food or aa ammo left... Other bypassed islands like Wake were used for this purpose too. I never understood why Palau is in the game because it is not interesting for the air war. It was just bombed to dust without any serious resistance.
But there is no need for a seperate map....just call Palau Yap and everything is ok..:-) (Geografical differences are not important)

Ok so we should have a unified Palau/Yap. Maybe Slikk could make it for us...
The other solution is to tart missions from the air. For Exemple for Tokyo Pnay Club, a campain using Iwo Jima and Kyushu map, most of misions start on the air, as at that time there was no map with Iwo and Kyushu on the same time. But the missions are pretty good. Excellent campain from Phil_K. Maybe we could have the same for Palau.
I would be VERY pleased to have japanese campains/missions for this map.....please Mr SAS~Gerax, i know you are skilled for that :P ;)

What a pitty it is 21st century island,not that one from late 40's.Phototextures are fine but must be used wisely.Please,repaint mainly those leaving asphalt road and houses/junkyards on them,thats so non WW2 :(

Well, i'm working on other projects now. Take gimp or o your Photoshop and erase it, it's gonna take you 4 minutes, you have 4-5 files to change, a work of 1 hour. That's easy to do.

I have a project of movies about bombers over Germany, so to make it realistic for a movie I will have to repaint the Berlin map. Same for Normandy, i have some movies in mind about D-Day and airborn missions by night, the bombing of Caen...

In case you didn't know but Dancing Bear is retexturing the Berlin map already. I like the way he adds snow on the fields.

Nop, just discovered this thanks. Nice effect indeed. I will see if it could be used for movies too. I need a photo realistic Berlin from high altitude for a movie. For play it's different, ormal textures can be enough.

Redko, I love this map, but I have one problem; I have a pretty good PC and graphics card, but the wave animation is killing my frame rates. would it be possible to have a "light" or "online" version of the map with just the new land textures?
I know you put many hours of work into this so I hate being critical, but right now it's only useful to me as a sightseeing map.

Did you try with Bombsaway new shallow texture ? It helps for Fps. I know some people seems to have fps troubles with that map depending of the graphic card. For information my old geforce 8800 gt 512mo runned without any problem in that map, even in battle situation. Know i have a gforce 470 is better of course. If you have an ati CG, try to put down aniso filtering and anti alias no more than X2 each.
The other thing is to index the textures. If you have photoshop or gimp, just open each texture, and in pic otions save as "indexed". This will turn 3mo textures into 1mo, which can be better for some pc. For the shallow texture, you can also save it after having indexed it into 512x512 resolution instead of 1024x1024 i'm using. If i remember well BombsAway's shallow texture for this map is in 512x512.... ::)
Maybe this could help you. To let you know the truth, i don't see what else more, this map behave very differently depending of CG as i noticed some troubles sometimes.
I will post later a new version without roads and painted houses, all textures will be edited. I can't do more than that.

Does this work in UP2.01? I've successfully got (stunning!) redko's Afrika (MTO, SandsofTime, Desert) maps running and even completed FlatspinMan's Afrika! campaign on them, but now I wanted to try the other "oldie but goldie" campaign that uses Palau Online - "Castaways" and no go :(
I renamed the redko_palau folder into Palau folder, like the great man suggested, I tried just running everything as default (ie "redko_palau")- same result. The all.ini does have both lines that it supposed to have. I deleted the House section in .mis for all missions and anyway I got the same error when I tried loading Palau or Palau Online in FMB

Maybe a problem of name file. This map is already on UP. Are you using that one or did you download the map again at sas? Ccause the map file structure may be different between UP as the donwloadable map here.
Chek the in the ".mis" file in of the missions you are trying to play: the name of the map there has to be the same than the map folder name you downloaded.

Seemingly it is but does not show the texture of the runway - you can see just a green jungle like throughout the whole island. How can I fix this? How can I update them in the DBW on this map?

Hi Kenzo,
I think you need also to make sure the load.ini calls that texture. You can try putting the complete "redko_Palau" and "_Tex" folders from tis thread in "MAPMODS/maps". With the original load.ini and textures the runway should be back ;D

Hi guys. I had the same issue. I tried putting the original load.ini in and it wouldnt work so I made a copy of the original map folder and renamed it to redkopalau then entered the new listing in the all.ini as redkopalau redkopalau/load.ini and made a folder called redko_tex then made a copy of his palau folder in redko_tex and placed it in my DBW/MapMods/Maps/_tex folder and whoo hooo! it worked. Now I have the correct redko palau. I also made a folder called redkopalau and placed it my QMBpro mission folder and it worked. If you guys want I could zip up everything needed to make this work for you and post a link.
After getting the map to work I made a new shallows texture for it as well.

is there anyway to make this the default Palau map in the game? For instance with the US Navy carrier take-off missions in the single missions section I still have the stock map. thanks

Play a mission with the map, then go to the mission files (miss files in Missions/Single/etc...), open them with notepad, copy the first line below [MAIN] (MAP etc, ...load.ini). Then, open the miss. files you want to use the new map, and replace the "MAP etc...load.ini" with the one you copied.

I named my redko Palau map
"redko_palau".
"redko_palau redko_palau/load.ini"
So, when loading the map, a different name appears.
In DBW 1.71, Quick missions for this map are named "Redko-Palau" as per parent folder. :)
Another way to override the stock map might be renaming the redko version to "Palau",..In a dedicated MapMods folder of course.
It can be a real treatment in IL-2 to divert maps with same names. Some maps are a real treatment to keep apart, I recall a similar issue with Okinawa.. ;)
Best is to give the new maps a name which clearly overrides the stock ones.
Also the naming conventions in IL-2 maps are odd at times, e.g. Desert Online IIRC is or was called OnlineMT in the all.ini list.

appreciate the help guys, but for some reason the map doesn't work in my 4.11.1 ModAct 4...it shows up in my FMB database and will load in FMB if I click on it, but I am unable to save/fly a mission from it. I press fly and nothing happens

Hit shift + tab and take a screenshot and if possible, post it here. This way aka within the last ca 6 lines in the text, we can tell what is missing.

turns out it's not an issue with the map, but rather an issue with my FMB... can't save or launch any missions from it suddenly. probably an issue for a different section of the forum though haha but thanks for the assist with the map stuff gents

If you cannot launch or save missions on this map, it is an issue with this map or missing objects for this map. ;)
Hit shift and tab and tell us what the last lines say or even better-take a screenshot with the text. Whenever you hit shift and tab, you get the error text overlayed on the FMB screen. ;)

Sorry it's taken a year to respond, school and the Marine Corps have seriously gotten in the way of my Il2 time haha- but when I press shift tab I get-
"WARNING: Bad Water if MapRID == 0"
I'm not gonna even pretend to have the slightest clue what that means. Any help getting this sucker to run right in my game would be greatly appreciated! Thanks gents

Hi guys.
So here are some pics of what will be final version of this map, this time with flyable airfields.
It was a hard task to make it, first of all to find good sources...with good pics of the airfield. Fortunately i have been helped by so many people by providing me pics, footages and advices that i would like to thank them so much.
I tried to make it looking like a coral ground as much as possible. I'm using two textures, one at 1024 resolution and standard zoom in the load.ini, the second one at 1024 but zoom 8 on the load.ini in order to give the best low flight resolution and rendering as possible.
Unfortunately for the first texture, i mean the airfield itself, i can't use zoom on the load.ini as it make it uncomptible with the island shape. It would have been a great deal to make the entire airfield at zoom 4 or 8 = it's the best for a really detailed low flight texture.
I'm experimenting those things on some desert maps like Lybia, Sinai, Sand of time, Mto and stock desert map. Only the stock desert maps will be available for download.
I guess the final map will be ready before this week end for all. If you have any advices or datas please post here. Enjoy.
And i hope you like like the final airfield guys ;), this was important to make this map functional
All the other textures are going to be with zoom 2 on load.ini, better rendering when closing to the ground...so i will move the bilding to fit to these resolution.
I'm still working on this. Some things may change before the release. I have to improve the junction parts where airfield textures meet the rest...
Thank you very much for this. Especially for the readme that you did. Even us old and not very smart guys can follow it. And I have to say - Palau looks pretty realistic. During the early 70's I did some diving off Palau, Tinian, Truk, Saipan, Guam and a couple of others in the Marianas group. Your map brings back some memories. Thanks again.

I would assume you have an objects saving issue from your first error report, Coberrick. Not being able to save is usually due to missing objects.
Which version do you run? I mean IL-2 version?

Or simply try SAS~Boomer's objects pack and his static.ini merged with your static.ini...but BACKUP everything you change. :)
