Title: Fairey Firefly FR 1 Skin
Post by: R33GZ on April 26, 2020, 08:31:57 PM
Im wondering how I go about altering the default skin for the Franken Firefly FR 1   https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,33979.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,33979.0.html)

Ive learned that, since it is a franken plane that appears to be made from a Spitfire (MkV?) a P-40 (E/M?), Fulmar and possibly an MS 406... its not possible to simply, make a skin for it as it is taken from multiple parts of different planes. Anyway, after looking through the mod folder I can see the different skin .tga files that, once assembled, result in the default skin seem in game.

If I were to change the paint job for those files, would it result in a change to the default skin. I would like to make it more accurate for BPF operations, such as Palembang and Sakishima.

One last question, does anyone know why they are 512 as opposed to 1024?

Any advice appreciated

Cheers

Hello R33GZ, altering the schemes of Franken planes such as this is quite difficult to do and equally hard to try and explain I am sorry to say. ;)

You are better relying on the existing scheme if you absolutely have to use that particular model, however, there is a up to date proper Firefly available that was imported into the game by Dimon, you will find it at another site though not here and I do not know if it is 4.09 compatible as I use mine in a 4.12 install but there are skins available for it representing various nationalities.

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hey Pete, thanks for the reply. Yes, late last night I did find that firefly as well as a whole bunch of BPF skins for it and very quickly decided that installing that model was the more sane option. It needed a few modified dlls, but otherwise works fine in vpmod 4.12

... 512 was the stock skin format (even for maps), way back in the ancient times (IL2 is 20 years now ...!), and when the sim was released, a 128 Mb GC was the very best you could buy ...  :P

Today there are 2096 skins in 24 bit format and GCs with 8 Gb ...  ;)

Good to know you found it Regan, much less hassle than trying to skin a Franken I can tell you from personal experience, it is a very nice model as well and with a great selection of skins is really a no brainer.

I am surprised that Gabriel and the IES team have not added this into the 4.09 stable as they have already used some the models Dimon made available, and
besides the Firefly there is a proper Walrus available as well for those sea faring types. ;)

Thank you very much for answering some of Regan's question Mick, really appreciated, I wasn't taking a lot of notice it seems and didn't take in that bit about skin size. :D

And with Corona I don't want to work on IL-2 anymore !

Hello guys, that explains why I have seen very little activity in the 4.09 stable of late. :o

The trouble with many of these imports is that there is still much to do to make them fully compatible with IL-2, I am looking at making a template for the Avro Anson, however, that texture is a odd shape and I thought maybe it would be better to re-map the thing, then slapped myself and thought do not go there. :D

I will tinker with the template for now and see what exactly I can achieve though. :P

Many of us have or are loosing the will to do theses things sadly, as for Firefly, to be honest I never tried the wing fold, not a fan of carriers really so I just assumed Dimon would have dealt with that my test was done from a normal airfield. ;)

Take care and be safe.

... to be honest I never tried the wing fold, ...
A lot of tests are done and require corrections (3D, coding, ...) and sometimes it takes a lot of time to do them!
Minimal or major !
I don't accept to broadcast mods if there are too visible horrors like the folding of the wings.
But to correct this problem you have to make 3D modifications on the 4 concerned wing pieces... and I'm very bad with 3ds !
In my game, planes have their wings folded whether on the ground or on a carrier !

Hello Gabriel, the 4.12 version actually leaves the wings in the deployed position if you start on a runway, they are folded on a carrier, on this particular aircraft the wing moves in part through the undercarriage door which looks odd, however, I just watched a video of the real thing and I think it would be fairly difficult to replicate for our game. :-|

https://youtu.be/7uSr_rY6ecM

Just look at the piece the crew man moves to allow the process to begin.

I have not myself tried any 3d for a wing fold, however, from doing other things it might be possible to leave as it is but try different orientations using the Matrix tools until it moves as per your own java code, you might get lucky, maybe not but worth a try.

If that fails I could put the meshes into gmax for you and turn them into the direction you think might work, try and give me a little image of what direction you think might be appropriate to work with your code, I am not the brightest with math so you will need to give me a clue. ;)

Take care and be safe.

I've watched several videos.
And so I noticed that the pivot points for the inner and outer wing are misplaced!
On this screen you will see in red the current positions and in green what would be better.
The polygons are for the inner wing and the circles for the outer wing!

Well whatever happens I have the main parts in gmax, minus anything else, we can deal with the rest
later if we actually get it to work as Gabriel imagined:

Just to clarify, this is the WingLOut_D0 that will move, right is hidden for now:

(https://i.postimg.cc/4dpw2qBy/Firefly2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WFbMhWRc)

Here I moved it back temporarily:

(https://i.postimg.cc/V6HsTZvy/Firefly3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8JMVfHLw)

Moving that back reveals the CF_D0 and WingLIn_D0 and WingRIn_D0.

I am going to go to bed now, I cannot face tonight the madness and mayhem that might ensue from here on in. :D

Tinkering can begin tomorrow. 8)

Look promising already.

At the end, we have to travel beyond our comfort zone to learn our limit, no? :)

Seriously, with yours and Gabriel's skills, as well as the collective knowledge on IL-2 modding here, I trust that all would end well.

At the very least we get to learn more about 3D modding through your journey - thanks again.

By the way you already showed one video but here's another one on the wing folding mechanism (@1:55):

I have a little MATLAB script that can move meshes and thus fix pivot points in a couple minutes without any 3D import or export. Looks like I should just use my script to move outer wing and then add opposite transition to hier.him, and that might fix the pivot easily, if it indeed is pivot position problem and not orientation. Maybe I should try that.
Title: Re: Fairey Firefly FR 1 Skin
Post by: Birdman on April 29, 2020, 12:49:27 AM
Well, in the end looks like hier.him edit and animation fix in classfile might be enough to fix the pivot because there's separate pivot adjustment mesh. That's the lazy way to move pivot without LOD, shadow, collision, hook and other part position editing needed.

Try this
Code: [Select]
[Wspong_L]
Mesh Wspong_L
Parent WingLIn_D0
Separable
Attaching 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0.9353 0.2382 -0.4613
[Wspong_R]
Mesh Wspong_R
Parent WingRIn_D0
Separable
Attaching 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 -0.9353 0.2382 -0.4613
[WingLOut_D0]
Mesh WingLOut_D0
Parent Wspong_L
Separable
Attaching 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0.9507 -0.0422 0.0203
CollisionObject xwinglout
[WingROut_D0]
Mesh WingROut_D0
Parent Wspong_R
Separable
Attaching 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 -0.9507 -0.0422 0.0203
CollisionObject xwingrout
and edit wing folding animation in classfile to make it look nice.

However, this new pivot point just makes things worse without proper folding animation, so don't use it separately without updated classfile.

... gents, this is proof again, that nothing can beat several modders joining forces to fix a bug ...  ;)

This screen is the exact moment when the wing collides and goes through the main gear:

Title: Re: Fairey Firefly FR 1 Skin

Actually 3D model has balls where the incorrect pivot point is, so obviously 3D editing is needed if those balls should be moved to the real pivot point. However, maybe fixing that collision with main gear is good enough for now using the easy pivot point fix together with reworked animation.

Unfortunately, I see another major bug when firing the cannons. Whole cockpit flashes while firing the cannons in my BAT together with too many faces error in console, so Body.msh in cockpit seems to have too many faces. Also toggling nav lights on causes the same cockpit issue together with frozen graphics, so this face count limit seems to be active only when there's some light sources in plane.

... just checked in my 4.09 game version (the mod released by Epervier is for 4.09 Rebels, class wise), and no bug while firing guns (I am using carmaster's 4096 DLLs, may be this explains that ...), and just a small glitch with nav lights (but I am using WxTech nav lights mod) ...  ;)

I managed to fix this cockpit error by cutting 99 last vertices and their 139 faces as separate mesh. Just add these https://www.mediafire.com/file/bm7lz34i733yuhr/Firefly_cockpit_fix.7z/file to your cockpit folder to shoot without graphics errors in BAT. Maybe such polygon limit doesn't exist in other game versions if it's added by some mod included in BAT. Anyway, this is the first time I've seen any issue like this in BAT, and here's that error in console:

Hello guys, looks like things are already nearly fixed. 8)

Looks like I should just use my script to move outer wing and then add opposite transition to hier.him, and that might fix the pivot easily, if it indeed is pivot position problem and not orientation. I have now put Gabriel's version of the Firefly in my 4.12 install, here is the Dimon version with wing fold issue last night:

(https://i.postimg.cc/pVcvd4vg/2020-04-29-08-51-34.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vDnkqPcz)

Here is Gabriel's with Birdman fix, a vast improvement, just need the java to halt the movement of the wing before
it hits the tailplane:

(https://i.postimg.cc/bY6jCMFm/2020-04-29-09-13-21.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/c68j6DW3)

(https://i.postimg.cc/sXQ0T6BN/2020-04-29-09-14-23.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/34hBRZFX)

I do not think I can do any better at fixing the pivot in the the 3d program, the Birdman fix is certainly a better
solution than me messing around and continually swapping altered meshes, all I would be doing is essentially the
same possibly with a worse result.

The difficulty is the wing on the real aircraft both lifts and twists and unfortunately we are not able to move
the undercarriage in any way, we cannot get away with closing a door either as the wing goes through the
leg as well in the original orientation.

I could move the pivot point so the wing missed that but more than likely once closed there might be a gap
if I moved it one way or the wing inwards into the other mesh depending on which way I went.

Could a ghost wing be made to come into effect at a time near to when the wing actually closes, one replacing
the other in a similar way to how skis replace wheels?   Trouble is that would add unnecessary complication.

To me the Birdman fix is the best way forward here if Gabriel can halt progress of the wing before it touches the tailplane. 8)

Thank you very much all of you for your work on this, really appreciated, hopefully Gabriel will be along soon to confirm
if he is able to put the last piece in the puzzle. ;)

I do have the flashing in the cockpit, with the fix or not, 4.12 with ModAct 5.30 although I see no error in the log like that
posted by Birdman, maybe other things in my install are at fault although I do have high resolution texture DLLs. o_O

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

You'll see standard British GPs, HE HVAR as well, most important the MCs from the Tirpitz raids
and BPF Missions. US Ordonnance I saw on pictures of the Thai Fireflies used.
45 Gallon Hurritanks as well.

The 90 Galllons Droptank is still missing.

I failed cloning from the Zero underwing Tank, a similar in shape.
If we can clone that, we can assign correct fuel load/weight, maybe rescale a bit.
Just an idea.

Semi-Armour Piercing and Armour Piercing ordonance:
US SAP or AP I'm unsure, I know the Cuda had these, but here I'm overasked.

I'm not good in this specific Modding, I have tried to add Droptanks to the Barracuda and Tarpon too,
without success. Trouble for me COD file tinkering... And messing with adding Hooks etc.
The Droptank Orientation is very weird then and completely covers the Pylons.

It only worked at the 45 Gal Tanks at the Firefly and in my SBD overhaul to add proper droptanks.

This can be a 90gal Tank, if I get the Error done, than I can decompile.
The Texture can be changed to suit.

I also need corrected Weight, dunno what this Massa(russian Hacker Language) is referring to, maybe Fahrenkilo, but unsure.

MASSA is TOTAL tank weight, including a FIXED conventional 10% of its own empty weight. That's to say that for 90 Imp gal you get:

90 x 4.54 x 0.72 [avgas specific weight] x 1.1 = 324 kg <---- MASSA

I'm not understanding what you say and what you're doing; did you give a glance to the tank I linked above (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,63941.msg703991.html#msg703991)?

I dug out my 75 Gal, glad to see you have one though. 8)

The rear could have been altered and as it was already set up for the Lysander might have worked.

Has Gabriel decided where to go from here with this yet do we know?

Take care and be safe.

As I announced to some people, I don't want to tinker with IL-2 anymore!
I gave what I had... now you can do what you want with it!  ;)

Hello Gabriel, I was unsure following the Birdman fix whether you would try that with your own code so held back from trying to make the changes you indicated in the earlier image you posted, I will leave as it is now you do not want to continue with it. ;)

Thank you very much for the changes you made available, really appreciated. ;D

I also lost the will some time ago as announced once in the forum to do anything much other than my vehicle build although I am tinkering with a template for the Anson as a distraction for those moments when I need a change.

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hi Mission Bug,

I haven't applied your changes yet, you may wish to look this up to inject what's missing.
Here is the original State Mod with the Reticle Fix, wich Files I dumped to make the Loadout changes.
Requirements is BAT 3.8.3 and that super dll.

Warning! Yes this has a different air.ini, but only at first Entry, the Name which resolves the Skinfolder.
Remember the first Entry of air.ini can literally be WTF!, important is the still unchanged 2nd entry here.
Greybeard caught me unaware Yesterday.
A future Update will see expanded Loadouts, as soon as they are public.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/b8qslib8ju5zwmz/Plane_FAIREY_MK1v2.7z/file (https://www.mediafire.com/file/b8qslib8ju5zwmz/Plane_FAIREY_MK1v2.7z/file)

Loadouts can be readout with Mike's Loadout Lister Tool. Was too lazy for that.

@Gabriel
You made a stand, your work will be remembered.
Wishing you all the very best.

Have phunn

Take care of yourself
Tobias

Hello Tobias, just to clarify for all of you out there, I have not actually contributed any fixes to this yet, I added certain parts to gmax ready to make some changes Gabriel asked for but before I had the chance to do anything some trial fixes had already been posted by Birdman, these can be added to what Gabriel provided a link for to take you to where I think we all are at the moment. ;)

We, or at least I, were waiting to see if Gabriel made some java alterations to accompany the Birdman fixes before taking things any further, these will now have to be done by someone else.

I will download your link Tobias, thank you very much, really appreciated. 8)

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hello guys, the Tobias version works fine in my 4.12 with ModAct 5.30 as it is, as did the version Gabriel posted. 8)

The problem now is things are going to have to become a consolidation of what is already available. ;)

From Gabriel:

The model he provided includes from what I can see the necessary lods that others do not, not sure if that is all parts but certainly ones I opened did.

Using the Birdman fixes with that enables the wing to better fold in that it avoids the undercarriage, however, it needs a java fix to stop movement of the wings before they move over the tail plane.

Includes from memory one set of bombs and a set of rockets.

From  Knochenlutscher:

This has a revised weapon load that includes a number of bomb types up to 1000KG, two rocket types and the new fuel tanks.

No lods as far as I can see.

I think includes a gun sight fix.

To do list then:

So guys, it comes down to how far you want to mix and match. :D

The weapon load from that version from Tobias is by necessity in the java, as are all but this includes additional stuff.

To use that with all the new lods from Gabriel you would need to move meshes/entries from one to the other.

You could use the weapons from Tobias in Gabriel's if you can open the classes and do the java changes, I do not know what differences there are anyway in the java of both versions.

You will need to be careful because the hooks for the weapons are in the meshes, wings I would guess here, so just moving one set of meshes to the other would/could also involve moving weapon hooks from one set of meshes to the other that is if they are not already there, it might be only certain loads are active in the java, again I do not know.

I have only used the Birdman fixes in the version from Gabriel, however, those fixes should work the same in the Tobias aircraft.

Hope you are not confused so far, I am. o_O

As you can see having both versions available makes doing the definitive version problematical because you will need to do changes to whatever version you opt to use in your install, making alterations is awkward as you need both models around and it is very easy to make mistakes as you move items between the two and test the ongoing work.

Just something to think about as you take those from the links available.

Personally if I was attempting this cross knitting I think I would use the version from Gabriel but alter the java to include the weapon options from Tobias, it would I think be easier to move the weapon hooks and their associated java into Gabriel's aircraft rather than try to move all the lods into that of Tobias. :-|

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Okay, I was very confused. At point of the current state, as I realized I worked at the Stoneage and
you all hoping for me to upgrade. I got note from CWatson, who pointed me in the right direction.
Atm. my Eyes are playing mess, an optical eye nerve inflammation makes reading for me utterly painfull.
Nevertheless I keep pressing and here's what I came up with the Help of Mick, as he was so kind to recollect the Links to visualize easilly. Thanks Mick for the recollection. Was a big Help.

recompiled everything up for easy access and here's Gabriels Mod, injected Birdmans Fix and
topped the Loadout upgrade. I hope that's the up-to date Model.
Inside you'll find Classfile changes, I dumped Gabriels and injected Loadouts at those parts,
leaving his code work as was. Hope that it was right.

This is still WIP, as I await to include more historic Loadouts, but they're still Beta now.

Best wishes
Tobias
