Title: Reloading onboard weapons;
Post by: nickthegreek2017 on September 27, 2024, 01:37:33 PM
Hello,

I hope this is the right place to put the question: I like flying quick missions using heavy and medium bombers but sometimes, at very inopportune moments, my guns run out of ammo. I'm sure it happens in real life, but I know in larger aircraft, many thousands of rounds of ammo are carried in separate crates. Does the game allow us to 'reload' the weapons in our gunnery position, and if so, how?

Thanks ahead of time

PS: I DID search 'reloading onboard weapons' on this site and I got the weirdest combination of 'reload' and 'weapons' but nothing to do with the actual matter that concerned me.

Also, I am using mod BAT v4.2.1

As I remember, some aircraft have the "AI" reloading. When one magazine is over, there is a delay and then another one is used.
It would be good to have an extra ammunition option for bomber gunners. After all, there are many stories about crew carrying extra cans of ammo. And AI gunners in the game spend ammo so fast...

I've noticed some drum fed guns changing; I hope the belt fed ones get the option to grab a new case of ammo, because mine always seem to run out at the most inopportune time (Perfect 'straight six o'clock shot' at only a few dozen meters away and my guns go 'click'.

Yes, it happens according to the Murphy's Law.  8)

Whenever I switch to the gunner's seat I can't believe how little ammo is available.
But it is what it is - and was...

Just a quick question because I didn't understand everything...
Do your turrets fire normally and then stop firing after a while?
Or do they just not fire from the start?  :-|

Sorry for the late reply! The guns fire but once the 'initial load-out' of ammo is used up, the guns stop working--at least that's how it is with 'belt fed' guns (the guns that have drum feed seem to be re-loadable or at least, the drums can be replaced).  that's it. I was hoping we could metaphorically 'load a new box of ammo'.

As I remember, the machine guns/cannon ammunition amount was one of the features the community watched closely since the first days of this game. The errors if done (I remember discussions about La-7 many years ago) were probably corrected already.
But it doesn't hurt to check the time of firing of the gunners you are concerned about and compare it to the historical information. And then to report the errors if there are any.

Still, "a new box of ammo" remains a desirable feature. If modders add it to some load-outs (if historically true), many bomber drivers will be happy.
