hi guys
one of the maps planned for early next year is a SNARK polar iceberg map.
what i'm looking to achieve is something similar to the iceberg map from Silent Hunter 3/4 series, some of you might be familiar with it.
the real difficulty (i'm still experimenting at the moment) is getting the proper effect of icebergs jutting out of the water vertically....basically, each little iceberg 'landmass' needs to have a cliff-face type of look, straight up out of the water, and not a gradual climb as most land masses.
it can be done, to a degree, but requires painstaking positioning of each iceberg, so that it lines up exactly with the small 'elevatable' sections that the map-making FMB uses, and then the 'land' edge has to line up exactly with the water's edge, so as not to have those unsightly see-through gaps where the water meets the ice.
i have quite a few nice ice textures, but will welcome any more, for those interested in helping.
back to the iceberg thing, it looks at this point as if it's going to be really tricky to get a decent-looking effect, as the icebergs will be very 'samey' because of these preset sections that we have to work with, elevation-wise.
what i thought would be a great help, is if one of the guys who knows a bit of 3D, could make an assortment of different shapes and sizes iceberg pieces, which i could then use to reduce this effect.
they would have to be relatively big, but smaller bits to have 'floating' about would also be welcomed.
knowing minimal about 3d work, i'm not sure how much of an ask this is, but obviously, it'd be pretty 'free-form', shape-wise, and some sort of shadowing option might be a good idea, i think.
if it's not too difficult, we could probably populate most of the map with these icebergs, and it would require only one or two actual mapped 'land/bergs', allowing at least one or two small landing/takeoff strips.
so, this is one of those maps that seems simple enough in theory, but practically it might be a handful.
anyway, that's what i'm looking toward doing, so if anyone thinks they could help out on this project, it'd be really great.
there's no real time-constraints (i hate deadlines, lol), and although i'd like to try for a first-quarter release next year, we could delay that as much as needed. no pressure.
so, anybody thinks they could help with this, please let me know. it'd be hugely appreciated.
it should be a really atmospheric map at the end of the day - a hostile, cold environment with not much happening other than tons of icebergs laying around, and would make for some interesting scenarios. i hope!
data-wise - well, i can provide hordes of iceberg photos, but no 'hard specs' are required, obviously.
