....... Retaking it in 1943 stabilised the Front and could've allowed an orderly retreat to entrenched positions in the Ukraine but alas, Hitler was a moron.

Yes mate you are really right!

I read the Paul Carell book about the East front operation and about the 1943 state that Manstein , after securing the region in spring , suggest Grofaz to keep time with a stabilized front and ready reserve to counter and repulse any Soviet offensive!

The goal was allow a reinforcement of the west front and defeat the Allied landing , in such case the most part of those force can be again switched to the east and retake the offensive because the Allied can't manke another landing for a while!

The history give it's reply in july of the same year.....

Sokolovo, south of Kharkov on the Mza River, was the first battle for the Czechoslovaks in the Red Army, during the 1943 German counteroffensive.  They were to hold the line Timchenkovo-Mirgorod-Artukhovka.  Request to please add these towns on the map.

I know you already have help with maps but I have Glantz's book "Kharkov 1942"... it has many maps which includes the smaller towns in this large area of operations.
Russian airfields would have to be on the far east side of the map for this.  I'm sure you'll do a great job with this.

Well, I'm currently involved in a revamp of my Channel map (redoing the airfields, adding a couple etc) so I haven't been working on Kharkov. However, I reckon the Channel map will be definitely re-released by the end of Feb, so Kharkov will resume. It's a much smaller job than the channel, so it won't be ages.

Joe

p.s. glad to see you're looking forward to it

Hell yeah looking forward to it, and considering the sheer quality of the channel map with sincerely baited breath. A map like this one has been sorely missing, personally I think it a far more important one than iasi, odessa, slovakia. This one is centred where real strategic balance teetered, it could've gone either way. You get over to slovakia and all you can win is an orderly retreat versus a route. Kharkov and you've got the entire southern Front, you could even lose Kursk and give up Belarus and stay like a tick in Ukraine for ten years. It's like a third moscow.

When you're done with that one - read "Graf and Grislawski, A Pair of Aces" by the same author.  More Kharkov ideas contained within.
