New Motherboard With Problems
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:38:52 PM »

OK, so I got a new motherboard. But i had to take it back out of my computer because i didnt have the right RAM or power supply for it. now, i hooked back up my old motherboard. But when i put in my monitor, the orange light goes blue (signal for ON) and then i get a message saying no signal detected. same happens when i plug it into my motherboard for the onboard gpu. my usb ports no longer work, either. also, when i turn on the computer, theres no longer a beep signifying that its on like it did before. could anybody tell me whats going on here? Please fast helpful replies. Thanks

No beep = very, very bad... or you didn't hook up the 12v motherboard power.  Check to be sure you have reconnected your power cables correctly.

Also check the two wire connector from the on/off button on the front of the PC is covering the right two pins on the mainboard (these are usually marked "PWR") - easy mistake to make...

Try a system reset...

Unplug all power sources connected to the PC and the motherboard, this includes the 24 pin socket from the Power Supply to the board and the monitor connected to the blue vga socket on the board. Press the on/off button on the front of the PC to "ground" the machine
Flip out the RTC coin battery on the mainboard
If you can locate the jumper - three pins with two covered with the words "CLEAR CMOS" printed next to it (often found close to the RTC battery) move the jumper up one pin momentarily then move it back.

Replace the coin battery, plug the psu back in and the monitor, turn it on and see if you can get it to beep

im absolutley sure everything is plugged in right. im guessing the mobo mustve fried somehow while taking it out and putting it in. the monitor doesnt even register that its plugged in when i plug it into the vga slot in my mobo. i hope to god it didnt happen with my new one. i guess ill find out when i get the chance to get new RAM and PSU

EDIT: as i was plugging in the stuff, i accidentally plugged in the power switch, reset switch, and HHD LED things incorrectly in the system panel at first and it wouldnt start. so i finally got it right after a few tries and it turned on but then the rest of this happened.

That wouldn't have damaged the mainboard - despite the static warnings etc. mainboards are not made of glass and you'd have to be quite careless or do something pretty stupid to damage one yourself!
It could be one of several things, perhaps even a tiny break in one of the 5V solder tracks, (due to the solder "drying out") which could have always existed but unscrewing the board from the frame opened it up - this would, of course, be a nightmare to detect and even worse to repair.

It's so frustrating when something that worked before suddenly doesn't! If you've got the time/inclination I'd definitely try a system reset which restores the onboard BIOS chip's default settings – you may have to have a couple of tries at doing it but I've seen that work on motherboards which previously showed no sign of life...

Good luck

ill just wait. my parents say they'll pay for the RAM and PSU as long as i pay them back eventually. gotta sort some other financial stuff first tho, they do. im on this POS laptop with dead pixels all around the edges of the screen. but it works as far as internet browsing goes....not even half a GB of RAM available tho, it says it has 480MB of RAM, which is terrible.

Well, update time. I got my ram and psu, they go in fine and everything, mobo works, fully functional light is on, everything turns on fine....BUT, my monitor still displays no signal. I have a feeling my gpu is dead. But also, this mobo didnt come with a speaker, so im just wondering whether or not it should make a beep cuz it doesnt. The mobo says it has an onboard video chipset with ati radeon something another, yet theres no frickin monitor plug in on the back plate so i cant do anything and this is making me very mad. Any solutions will be helpful. Thanks

Are you searching DVI plugin from that motherboard, maybe it has just VGA plugin?
I never have heard about motherboard with Integrated Radeon graphics without any plugin.

What motherboard is it?

The speaker is usually included as part of the case

When you connect the wire from the on/off button on the front of the PC did you notice a two twisted wire red/black cable ending in a wide 4 pin plug? That's the onboard speaker cable...

If you can give me the make and model of the motherboard I'll download a schematic and check where everything is located...

Don't worry it's probably something simple

When you connect the wire from the on/off button on the front of the PC did you notice a two twisted wire red/black cable ending in a wide 4 pin plug? That's the onboard system speaker cable and it attaches to the panel on the mainboard in the position below...
Once you've attached it (it doesn't matter which way round as long as it's in the position below) the PC will "Beep".
