Forget getting anything USB to work, except for maybe an external drive, outside of Windows! I've got USB headphones and they don't work until Windows starts. Before buying a new video card why not get any old crap headphones with a 3.5 mm audio jack plug on them for a few dollars? You'll be able to plug them into the green socket and maybe hear the beep. They're cheap in the UK so they're going to be next to nothing in the US - if the GPU is spannered the PC may well beep in a code as I said earlier to give an idea of any hardware problems.

Also the GFX card may just need configuring in the BIOS settings as HundertzehnGustav was suggesting and so might the USB functions come to think of it...

Charging a device from a PC USB port - not the best idea really - on an average mainboard the Universal Serial Bus shares just 500 milliamps of power between all the available ports...

yea, agree, but these iDevices of all kinds are USB only. (Apple!!! aaargh!!)
i have a USB->220V adapter and use that fopr charging, the USB on the PC only for Data transfer.

soon, the EU will enforce all mobile phones be chargeable via USB to get rid of the Power supplies and all.
Hope Mobos will be able to handle that!

Good to know about USB.  I've been searching for a new set of speakers of late and had to really dig to find one that WASN'T USB, with the old plug type instead.  That explains why.  Apple...  >:(

The main reason that most USB devices fail before Windows starts is actually in the BIOS settings under "APM" Automatic Power Management where you can choose whether the BIOS allocates the power or you leave it up to Microsoft. Lol

I can feel another MS vs EC law suit comming on...  :D

yep. with the new or if possible borrowed graphics card (PCI-express, not agp!) we will know what the Mobo says, and access its features.

@ RedrumSalad

Have you tried your video card in the black PCI x16 instead of the blue slot?

Just a thought...

get ahold of an old PS/2 keyboard. they are more reliable than your wireless mouse and keyboard.

but shouldnt be a problem. keyboards and mice aere standard input devices, ad recognised as such.

As HundertzehnGustav said - there's a simple answer to that one - use a ps2 keyboard and mouse - that's why the purple and green ps2 sockets are included on the back i/o panel...

Then when you have finished configuring the mainboard you can plug in alternative USB devices and wait for Windows to start...

Seriously - there probably is a way but it would require turning items on and off in the BIOS until you get it to work - but when in doubt choose the path of least resistance and use the ps2 sockets...
