detailed airfield
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:23:39 AM »

I asked this elsewhere with unsatisfactory response so I hope you don't mind my asking here.

Can anyone recommend a high quality, detailed airfield for download? I'm used to making my own airfields for co-ops and download the occasional ones but I haven't found a really good, highly detailed example. I believe there is a good one on its way from 352nd FG though.

It would be great to use a home airfield/field/aerodrome/airport with all the trimmings where one could taxi and see lots of detail; fighter or bomber, it doesn't matter. All the airfields I've seen so far (from Mission4Today, for example) are rather sparse. I know I can build my own - which I do by adding a little more more detail each time I update some of my co-op missions - but I'm sure there's some really good ones to exploit.

Suggested specification:
good location in well-detailed scenery area, major runway(s), taxiways, control tower, hangers, maintenance hangers, transporation area, fire and rescue, service areas, munitions storage, ancillary buildings, accomodations, fuel storage, anti-aircraft defences, shelters, static figures, farms and villages nearby, smoke in countryside, static aircraft parked on apron, static aircraft in revetments, static aircraft on dispersal, AI aircraft ready to taxi, AI aircraft in circuit, AI aircraft in locality, lots of static vehicles, lots of AI vehicles/motor bikes/bicycles going about their business, loads of local power line poles, major HV power lines running near, fixed and optional lighting, fencing around perimeter, internal fencing - you get the idea - loads of minor but interesting objects

I guess the simple reason there are not too many detailed airbases available on maps is that it makes the files
alot bigger and some computers are just not up to speed in using them. There are already some extraordianry maps
already made and available out there, but even they are not completely "filled" up with so much. Its also good the
way they are , because you can add whatever you may wish to them later on. I am not an expert map makers, but
every now and then just to pass the time away from painting skins I spend some time on adding objects to my airfields,
to make them look a little more realistic. Its not an easy job, because its a whole new diferent hobby apart from all
the other things involved with this IL-2 game, but its alot of fun too.
Awhile back I posted some real aerial photographs from WW2 about Luftwaffe air bases in Europe for those that
migtht want to create those real life scenarios for their European maps.
Its posted in the Screenshots section of this forum. https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13042.0.html
The recent English Channel maps are very well made and detailed and have many of the real RAF bases in England and some in France too. Check them out. I have been having a great time flying with them.
One recent map that needs to be looked into is the new WW1 Somme_Map by UP~Boomer. Its a terrific looking map with all
the nice landscape details in it and it still needs a few more objects placed in it to recreate those WW1 battle scenes as well
as the actual airbases. Pretty soon there is going to be alot of new WW1 airplanes available , so a nice realistric map is most welcomed.

Would highly recommend the channel maps by canonuk, both the beta version and the final versions. Both are beautiful works of art, lovely maps!

Thanks chaps.

('Malone - apologies).

max_thehitman - I wanted to concentrate more on airfields rather than maps. As I said the 352nd FG map is looking good and I've flown over the Somme also. I'm looking forward to great air experiences in both these areas.

_AUS_Salmo - just downloaded the airfield templates. They'll make a good start for what I want.

Moggy Cattermole - I didn't realise I had a great map -the English_Channel_1940 - installed for quite some time.

I think I'll stooge around Canon's and 352's maps for a while, see which I like the best, then use the airfields templates ideas as a start in creating one really detailed 'permanent home' for my co-op missions. Thanks again.

One thing to keep in mind. FMB has a finite object level that you reach and then it won't let you put anymore objects on your map, so it would be a good idea to use as many map "textures" as possible when doing this or you won't have any room for ground targets later. I found this out the hard way when I tried the same thing. Had a scratch built airbase with tons of detail like you mentioned and was still plugging away when the game said enough is enough and I couldn't put any more objects in.

I'll watch out for that US_Grant, thanks. (I'm surveying 352- and Canon- RAF Tangmere as a possible home-base at the moment).

If you're looking at the Tangmere from the 352nd map that they showed in their preview pics (I don;t know how it looks in game), be warned that it's totally historically incorrect. Totally.

Both English Channel maps are amazing...

I forgot to mention... The images posted on these other websites were of the Beta-test Maps and
were not completely finished at the time they were posted there. So many other things have been
changed and also added to the maps later when they were made available to the public.

My most enthusiastic applause to everyone involved in these projects.
Some details might not be 100% correct but I still like very much the overall creations.
They are simply stunning and beautiful!

Don't get me wrong, max. I didn't say the map wasn't good. I was saying that the Tangmere in their map isn't historically correct. That's all.

I missed your replies earlier while I was studying 352' and canon' areas around Tangmere; thanks anyway. I'd already opted for canonuk's map because I found the textures didn't repeat obviously so often and the light hues were like an English spring day; it gave me a better feeling and atmosphere. However, the layout of hangers appear to be incorrect (too dense for manoeuvring) - but never mind. I'll probably use the 352' map when their detailed airfield is made available.

My version of RAF Tangmere is progressing slowly. Currently, there's over 500 objects in and around the site and when I've finished it I'll offer it up as a small gift to the fraternity.
