Yup, those and the F-105Gs the Ga. ANG had at Dobbins in the early 80s both had distinctive sounds. They both would shake the earth when in burner.

And I must correct myself, the markings on the F-4E above are post nam low vis, put on the nam colors. they even did a wrap around job where they extended the top colors to the bottom for a while. I never got to see one in low vis markings.

whoh, I didn't thought I'd find the P 38 to be small one day ???
I can still remember a flight with a Do-228 (twin turboprop, 15 passengers) from Kiel (Germany) to RNAS Yeovilton (Somerset, South West England) for the german navy.
We've been intercepted by a wing of F-4F Phantom II, the leader lowered flaps and gear in order to decellerate and positioned himself left hand of our Do-228.
We've been literally hiding in his shadow, the fuselage of the Phantom shadowed our whole aircraft.

After about two minutes he separated, engaging afterburners at roughly 100m distance. You could feel the kick in your stomach when the shock wave hit us and there was no chance to read your own words anymore.

Best regards - Mike

and of course you were so amazed by this sight that you forgot to take a picture :(

Haha, nowadays this is a valid question, but that was back in the days when there were no digital cameras for everyone, let alone in each and every mobile phone (actually in those days I've had my very first mobile, battery lasted half a day on that motorola monstrum) and since it was no planned rendezvous but rather scheduled as a boring "bus driver" ride from A to B, of course I didn't carry a camera with me.

Best regards - Mike

He can be forgiven, as I tried to keep a camera with me, but film and lenses big enough to take a decent pic were alot bigger than they are now, and film needed processing, printing etc. I just wish digital had come along 20 yrs earlier.  :(

It was around very expensive back then in the 70's or the 80's when my father bought it, but it makes bautiful photos.
