I suppose a re-paint is cheaper than a shit-ton of flying replicas, huh?

Thats true, though the 1969 movie did a much better job with the hacks, the rest could have been fixed with a 5 minute google (or whatever was king of the search engine back in 01) of the 71 Squadron's history.

This is of course true also. But I'm not sure I'd want to cut apart a flying spit's cannons for the sake of supreme accuracy.

Agreed  :)  but this is the movie business, a post CG edit out of the cannons would have been easy, however as i said this is the movie busines and they simply dont care..the intended audience for that film thinks a cannon fires a cannonball, end of story  :)

For a split second I thought it was a hellcat due to the paint job, but the shape was wrong... Then I said oh... it's a 190 in USN colors.  How interesting...

We had another 190 dressed up in American paint up there not too long ago.  They were so awesome the yanks just couldn't keep their paws off em!
